BREAKING THE GRID

SENIOR PORTFOLIO

Born and raised in Kailua, Hawai’i my life wasn’t at all normal. I grew up across the street from the beach, and ocean sports quickly became my life style. I began to paint, and sculpt at a young age. Art quickly became my passion, a long with sports. For middle school, and high school I went to Kamehameha, which is an all Hawaiian high school. My high school had one of the top athletic programs nationwide. I was a four year varsity paddler, played volleyball for six, and won multiple state championships in both sports. Throughout high school I knew what my major would be in college, graphic design. I decided to attend Academy of Art University to major in graphic design, and also play at a NCAA Division II level. In 2010, right out of high school, I came to Academy of Art University to play volleyball and study graphic design. After completing the spring semester in 2011, I moved back to Hawaii. In the fall of 2011, I worked full time and attended the University of Hawaii, continuing to pursue my Graphic Design degree. After completing the fall semester at UH, I found that I lost my passion for art, lost my passion to play volleyball, and basically lost all passion to better myself. I hit rock bottom, and never thought in my wildest dreams I would be where I am at today. Deep down inside I realized that the Academy of Art was where I belonged. I enrolled at the Academy for Spring of 2012. I got my flight, and enrolled in a one week span, a spur of the moment. I stayed with friends in San Francisco until I could get on my own feet, and get a place of my own. I was working full time, and attending Academy of Art full time as well. I made the volleyball team again, but couldn’t participate until the Fall of 2012, and even then would have to red shirt because my credits did not transfer from UH. Coming into the fall of 2012 I found that I was the weakest physically I had ever been in my life. This was a big wake-up call as I was used to being the strongest and fastest in every sport I have ever done, and along with that, I have a really competitive spirit. So the team had to make individual goals, and my goal was to get into the strongest shape possible. The fall semester ended but my training didn’t. During winter break I was determined to work out everyday, and come into the Spring season, better then ever. In the Spring of 2013, I played my first game in three years. I came in stronger then every, blowing all my fitness tests out of the water. And the was just the beginning. I completed my last season in the Fall of 2014. Now in the Spring of 2015, I am graduating. It has been a long five years, but what this whole experience has taught me is that I don’t give up. My attitude in life, reflects my attitude in design. I am determined to push my limits, and be the best I can be. I have had a harder road then a lot of people. Being a student athlete, and a designer speaks for that. I am who I am because I broke the grid.

BREAKING THE G When your born, your born with a given path. Your parents set this path out for you, and typically you follow it not knowing any better. For designers, we always start at a grid. I have had harder road then most, and chose not to follow the path. I chose to break the grid, and this is my story.

REBIRTH OF A BRAND

/ ELEMENTS

OF REBRANDING

When a brand is created, so is it’s personality. Rebranding I need to consider all of the brand’s personality, and audience it was born with. With this project, I rebranded ESPN. ESPN is the largest sports network, and is one of the most recognizable brands worldwide. I wanted to do something different, while still holding it’s equity. For this project we needed to create a logo, and brand guidelines. The logo was just the first step, and I needed to create so many other elements to carry a strong brand presence through out. I created a secondary graphics, and application usages.

/ BREAKABLE

GLASSWARE

This project’s purpose was to design a package for breakable glassware. I chose to do wine glasses from Williams-Sonoma. I chose Williams-Sonoma for the sole purpose that at the time they did not have their own brand of wine glasses. I wanted to really capture the Williams-Sonoma brand through the label, which they are known for. This project was a fun project, because I had two of my closet friends collaborate with me. One is a photographer, the other is a food stylist. We got together on a typical Sunday, took photos for my box, and afterwards got to enjoy each other’s company with the leftovers. The process was a great way to start this project, and really carried the fun attitude throughout. Page 02.02

APP DESIGN

As designers we always need to stay ahead of the curve. Programs, trends, and the industry is forever changing. Because of that we need to be forever changing as well. UX/UI design is a must for designers now a days. This was a freelance project I did for a company that wanted to have their users be able to pay their medi-caid, and hospital bills through their mobile app. It is an easy way for the customer to find a health facility nearest them, find doctors, and set up a bill pay according to their visits.

CONCEPT & DESIGN

The goal of this project was to design or redesign a game, and all it’s applications. I created my own game named Taliki. Taliki is an island whose natives are a tribe of tikis. The bravest tiki’s are sent out on a dangerous mission to the darkest parts of the island. They are sent on a mission to retrieve a potion to make them invisible to the human species, who began inhabiting the island of Taliki. The first one to retrieve the potion, is crowned the bravest tiki by the volcano god Vomaha. The game is filled with fortunes, and misfortunes.

BRANDING

The purpose of this project was to rebrand or brand your own alcohol brand and package. I created my own bourbon whiskey brand, and named it Blake’s Bourbon. This whiskey is designed specifically for an executive audience. I decided to go with a more typographic approach towards the label, and the gold/black color scheme.
