URBAN DESIGN DISSERTATION (MAUD): SYNERGIZING BALESTIER (SINGAPORE) INTEGRATING RECREATION & CITY LIFE

“Cachet” 

Published by MAUD department in our ANNUAL MAGAZINE of School of Design and Environment (National University of Singapore, Year 2016)

Exhibited at THE ARCHITECTURE SERIES: CITYEX 2016, Urban Redevelopment Authority of Singapore The City Exhibition is an annual event to showcase selected works of students from the NUS Department of Architecture, including specializations from Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Urban Planning and Urban Design.

Macro analysis of the site provided a broader vision to make park connector as a part of Balestier area rather than treating it as a separate element planned by PCN. To make Balestier area a part of the urban central loop thereby, revitalizing Balestier as well as strengthen the urban central loop.

Design Vision 

Revitalizing Balestier road & park connector thereby generating a strong identity to the Balestier area

To integrate recreation & city life through a network system

Overlapping of diverse programs & public spaces thereby attracting various distinct users will synergize the entire Balestier area

Strategy To integrate recreation (park connector) & city life (Balestier area) by creating: A. Sense of belonging & identity Creating active physical & social nodes which will create an identity to the precinct. Development of high caliber streetscape in keeping with the character and importance of the heritage conservation district. B. Network system Generating quality of public movement through a network system connecting the nodes

ASHISH CHANDULAL PANCHAL ashishpanchal5589@gmail.com The SWOT analysis of the site was done based on 3 major components – urban fabric, urban green and public open spaces, resulting in 3 major issues: 1. Distinct districts 2. Under-utilized park connector 3. Release points along heritage trail

Design Intent Overlapping diverse functions and spaces - integration of the existing distinct districts & different users City life - release points along Balestier road. - reviving heritage trail. - making Balestier more pedestrian friendly. - challenging the future land-use proposed by ura. -re-thinking the existing usage. Recreation - activating & injecting more public spaces. - Vacant and unused land as an opportunity for recreational spaces. - Green as connectivity element for pedestrians and cyclists. Overlapping intents - introducing breathing spaces along the Balestier road. - Addition of green as a sub-element to enhance the existing/new programs. Tackling the 3 major issues as per the SWOT analysis: 1. Distinct districts Overlapping of diverse functions & creating a strong network system 2. Under-utilized park connector Creating nodes with activities which integrate with the functions of adjacent districts 3. Release points along heritage trail Strengthening the existing open spaces and pedestrianizing the major nodes

Design Intervention The design intervention are characterized by overlapping of the urban elements-city life, recreation and community, where one of the area focuses more on recreation, second on city life and third more on community thereby integrating Balestier & PCN. These three intervention areas have potentially helped in revitalizing Balestier area.
