ADVICE

What to ask at an open home It’s easy to get carried away when you’re searching through property listings for the house of your dreams. But if you’re not careful, home buying can become a nightmare.

“Remember that you can ask the real estate agent anything you like about the property,” he says. “They are also required to tell you everything they know and not withhold any details.”

“Buying a property is a complex and potentially stressful process, not least because it involves such a scary amount of money,” says Kevin Lampen-Smith, chief executive at the Real Estate Agents Authority (REAA).

If you’re not sure what to ask, here’s a handy list of questions. Open homes can be busy, so ask the agent if you can talk on the phone, or send questions via email. •

“It’s smart to do as much as you can to reduce the risk of unwelcome surprises or unexpected costs further down the line.”

In the first instance, Lampen-Smith recommends drawing up a list of questions to ask about properties you’re interested in.

settlement date? •

What maintenance, repairs or improvements have been carried out? Do these have permits?

Is there a Land Information Memorandum (LIM) available or a building report prepared by an accredited property surveyor?

Have there been any issues with the property, such as earthquake damage or water-tightness?

Is the property well-maintained? What condition are the roof, piles, wiring, and plumbing in?

Are there any offers on the property, or have any contracts been cancelled by potential buyers?

Is the property insulated? If so, to what degree (eg walls, underfloor, ceiling)?

How long has it been on the market? What is the seller’s preferred

If you like to spoil your cat or cats, you need catnip in your garden. This aromatic herb is like a drug to cats and they love it. They like to rub themselves upon it, wallow and tumble in it and feed on the branches and the leaves. For those of you who aren’t a fan of cats this hardy perennial can still be a good herb to have in the garden. Catnip makes lovely borders or edging. It’s greyish leaves and white to pale pink or purple flowers make it a pretty plant. But be wary of any neighbours with cats as they might take a liking to your plants and they don’t tend to be gentle with it. Pick up some Awapuni catnip plants next time you’re at your local supermar-

ket, Bunnings or The Warehouse. Or order some direct to your door from our online shop at www.awapuni.co.nz. Then pick a spot to plant. Catnip will grow to around 50-80cm and likes welldrained soil with sun or light shade. It doesn’t like a wet winter and remember, if you have cats, consider where in the garden you want them to lounge around

on your plant. And, if you’ve got chooks or compost try growing catnip around the coop or bin. The scent is said to repel rats. Space each catnip seedling around 50cm from the next. For those wanting to provide further joy for cats, try stuffing some dried leaves of catnip into a soft cat toy. It will keep them amused for hours!

Grumpy Old Women Game of Crones

Lucy Hammonds – Empowering Women Talk Series

Sue Nicholson Answers from the Other Side

Yes, they’re back! This time with magic! Grumpy Old Women bring their Game of Crones to answer the unanswerable. How to fix absolutely everything!!

Venue: Ashburton Art Gallery and Heritage Centre

Venue: Event Centre

They conquered NZ with Grumpy Old Women, took Australia and the Universe by storm with 50 Shades of Beige and now they’re in another World. Yes!

We are celebrating achievements of women throughout the month of March in conjunction with the Zonta Ashburton Female Art Award (ZAFFA). This is the first lecture in a two part lecture series based around empowering women. This lecture is by Lucy Hammonds, Curator at Dunedin Public Art Gallery on the history of the Benson and Hedge Fashion Awards- one of the most anticipated events on the national fashion calendar.

Venue: Event Centre

Grumpy Old Women: Game of Crones is coming and it offers practical remedies for the atrocities of modern life. Advice for administering safe torture to prevent snoring using BBQ tools. Demonstrations of how to clean the bath whilst having mediocre sex at the same time. How to overeat on a diet. What to do when the man in your life kisses your miniature Schnauzer more than you. In Game of Crones, the young are discussed and then dismissed. Men are lovingly disembowelled. Old fashioned housekeeping practises resurrected; is it too late to learn to sniff meat to determine if it’s past its use-by date? Grumpy Old Women will stop for nothing on their mission to slay the dragons of nonsense and reclaim the kingdom of common sense... well maybe a glass of wine and a lie down.
