DIY compost bins What many gardeners refer to as “black gold” is a mixture of vegetable waste, yard waste (like leaves and garden leftovers), and even stuff like paper and cardboard, all of which breaks down together and eventually creates this nutrient-rich miracle-mix that, when mixed with soil, helps plants be their very best. Compost bins don’t need to be extravagant and expensive, though. Sometimes the most simple are the most effective. Milk crate compost bin. To make this vertically stacked compost bin, you will need three milk crates, a mesh net or screen of some kind, scissors and a hot glue gun. You will also need some wood, a saw, a drill, some screws and varnish to make the lid. You’ll also need some newspaper and food scraps. Start off by wiping the inside of the crates, then line the inside sides with the mesh, which will allow air and water to flow through, but it’ll keep any pests out. Hot glue the mesh to the milk crate and while it’s drying, make the lid. To make the lid, measure the

size of the milk crate and cut four planks a few centimetres longer than the crate size. To attach the four planks together, cut two pieces of wood long enough to cover the planks, but make sure you can put the lid on top of the milk crate without any gaps. Drill the two shorter pieces onto the bottom side of the four planks to keep everything stable and secure. Paint some varnish on the lid and leave it to dry. Once the varnish is dry, line each of the milk crates with two layers of newspaper and chuck some food scraps in as well. Stack the milk crates up and put the lid on the top. Simplistic compost ‘bin’ This is an extremely basic yet effective compost bin, which really, is just a large lid to put over your compost heap in your yard. For this one, you’ll need six eight-foot pickets, three eight foot 2 x 2, a saw, some chicken wire, a hammer and some nails and a staple gun. First, saw the eight foot pickets in half. Next, saw the 2 x 2 into four pieces to serve as corner posts. Nail the now four-foot pick-

ets to the corner posts, making sure to line up the edges to make an open box.

Awapuni Nurseries Spring has arrived, which means salad season is just around the corner. And there’s nothing like picking fresh salad ingredients straight out of your garden. I’ve talked a lot about the different salad plants (typically lettuces) we have available at Awapuni – iceberg, baby cos, red, triumph, just to name a few. But for some reason I’ve never mentioned endive in one of these articles. And I’m not really sure why. Endive is a great addition to any salad. I like to partner its fine curled, mid-green leaves with rocket. To my mind, endive is a bit bitter and rocket is a little pep-

What’s equally important, and another reason why I’m surprised I haven’t mentioned endive in the past, is it’s so easy and quick to grow. Unlike most lettuces, it doesn’t need to create a heart in the centre so it’s very quick to produce. Simply pick the leaves off as you need them. To plant, look for a well-drained spot in the garden. If the soil is still a bit wet and cold from winter, try growing endive in a pot. Just add some good quality potting mix, plant a couple of seedlings around 5cm apart and away you go. Depending on where you are in New Zealand and how warm the soil is yet, it will take around four to six weeks for your endive to be ready to harvest. Remember, you can tell the soil is warming up when you need to start mowing your lawns again.
