Do your homework before buying a holiday property

“Remember that you can ask an agent anything you like about a property. Agents are not allowed by law to withhold any information they know about a property or, for example, relevant information about nearby developments.”

Owning a holiday property can be an attractive prospect. But property seekers need to remember to do their homework first, warns the Real Estate Agents Authority (REAA). REAA chief executive Kevin Lampen-Smith says potential buyers must remember to do the necessary groundwork. “Whether it’s a beachside dream home or a classic Kiwi bach, buying a property is a complex process. It’s crucial that you do your homework first to avoid any hassles,” he says. “​ It’s easy to fall for an area or a property, but you need to be hard-headed about issues like coastal erosion, and the challenges and costs of ongoing maintenance and security.”

The REAA is an independent government agency established to promote and protect the interests of consumers when buying a property. It works to ensure a high standard of service and professionalism in the New Zealand real estate sector. REAA Chief Executive Kevin Lampen-Smith

School holiday boredom buster

It’s been a while since my daughter required entertaining in school holidays, but I can still appreciate the need to have a few tricks for boredom-busting up the sleeve. And given we lived, and still do, on-site at the nursery it’s probably no surprise that my number one trick is to get gardening particularly growing vegetables. Getting busy in the garden is a great way to entertain kids but it also gets them outside and can help instil from an early age a love of nature, plants and growing. My three tricks for gardening with kids are – keep it quick, keep it easy and keep it fun. Keep it quick means plant fast growing vegetables that can be harvested early. Veges like radishes, lettuces, peas, spinach and zucchini all mature quickly and can be eaten off the plant or before they fully mature. Next, keep it easy. This means making sure you pick the right spot for their garden. Don’t fob them off with a dreary part of the garden. Give them a prime spot to plant. This will help them get the best results and ensure they stay encouraged and interested. It’s also important to make sure you plant the seedlings in places it’s easy for small people to reach and work on. If you can, get them their own kid-sized tools to make it easy for them to dig and

Venue: Community House Mid Canterbury If you are part of a not-for-profit group working with volunteers and looking for funding, then this workshop is for you. There are five presenters from Community Trust Mid South Canterbury, Department of Internal Affairs, Advance Ashburton, Ashburton Licensing Trust and Ashburton District Council. They will be speaking about the funding they have available for community groups, what they fund, funding criteria, reporting back to them and how to apply for funding.
