HEATHER

SCARECROW

THIS year’s Heather Scarecrow Festival takes place between 31st July and 7th August. This is no ordinary Scarecrow Festival. To say the residents of Heather go all out each year to produce amazingly creative, imaginative and often highly comical displays is a real understatement.

The village is transformed by dozens of Scarecrows proudly displayed in the front gardens for everyone to view and admire. The event has become increasingly popular with people travelling from far and wide to see creations based on topical events, famous figures and celebrities from the big screen, TV and books and much more.

8

FESTIVAL 2016 All money raised through the sale of Scarecrow Guides goes straight back into the village or donated to local community groups in, or associated with H Heather. From the p proceeds of last y year’s festival over £ was don£6,000 a ated to village g groups such as t the School & Pres school, St John the Baptist Church and Heather St John's Football Club for ongoing projects and equipment.

Visiting the Scarecrow Festival is a great way to spend a sunny

family day. There’s free parking at Heather St Johns Football Club or at the Village Hall on Swepstone Road. Scarecrow Guides are available for just £2 and can be purchased from the Football Club, Village Hall, Village Corner Shop, The Queen’s Head and The Crown Inn. A DIFFERING holiday perspective ISN’T it odd how situations can be viewed from completely different perspectives? One such situation is the fast approaching summer holidays. The six or seven week break stretching out in front of many families is something that will spark very different emotions. For children the prospect of weeks and weeks away from school is probably the highlight of the year, while for parents who are juggling work and home commitments, the holidays can loom with a sizable portion of apprehension. It’s the endless challenge of how to keep kids occupied and limit the number of times they say “I’m bored” each day! We may have a solution! Okay so it’s not going to solve all your holiday problems but at least it will help with the last week of July.

You may have noticed some of the publicity about Ashby Bible Week that’s taking place 25th to 30th July?

10

Editorial by Ashby Christadelphian Church, Union Passage, Ashby

www.ashbychurch.co.uk

A whole range of activities are happening during the week that will interest both adults and children. For example The National Bible Exhibition is coming to Ashby, plus a range of evening events. However, there’s also lots of fun activities for kids, including our usual Holiday Club. Some of these events will take place at the Ashby Christadelphian Church on South Street, plus every afternoon there will be a program of interactive activities at Hood Park (next to the playground). Come down and join in! So whether you are really looking forward to the holidays or simply dreading them, put 25th to 30th July in your diary. You could book your children into Holiday Club, be entertained in the park and potentially even learn a bit about the Bible too. What’s more you may discover something you didn’t know about God or realise that the Bible is worthy of a second look (or first look for that matter!). Visit www.ashbychurch.co.uk for more info about Ashby Bible Week.

Jim’s Tractor Run & Family Fun Day

PLANS are well under way by Ashby de la Zouch Town Council for the annual Jim’s Tractor Run & Family Fun Day which is taking place on The Bath Grounds, Ashby on Sunday 31st July 2016. Starting with the grand tractor run heading off from Roecliffe Farm on Leicester Road at 11am the tractors will make their way through Ashby’s Market Street, out to Blackfordby and return to the Bath Grounds around 11.45am for display. The event is quite unique with its combination of tractors and vintage vehicles, making a colourful display for enthusiasts to browse and chat with their owners. The relaxed format ensures that the different makes and types of vehicles are all mixed up, which has proven to be popular with visitors.

16

There’s loads going on for all the family with musical entertainment hosted by Hermitage FM, a variety of trade and craft stalls, children’s fairground rides and inflatables, a circus skills workshops, a craft tent with Emma’s Crafty Kids, the Mini Beasts Roadshow, archery and much more. It’s guaranteed to keep the family entertained for hours. If you’re feeling hungry or thirsty then don’t worry, a choice of local food outlets

will be on site along with a licensed bar and an ice cream van. Also returning this year is the Fun Dog Show. With the emphasis on FUN there are a number of different categories to enter, from waggiest tail to cutest puppy. Bring your pet dog along and mix with other dog owners. A small fee per category is payable on the day when you enter. The event is free to enter so come along with your family, relax and soak up the wonderful atmosphere. The fun continues through to 4pm so make a day of it, there’s no shortage of things to do and it’s all for a good cause. Last year’s event raised over £2,000 for local charity; Hospice Hope and it would be great to try and top that!

money matters

It’s Good to TALk by Kevin Cunningham of Bleathwood IFA Ltd

WHEN I’m out and about I note more and more people sat in a bar, on a bus or train sat looking at their mobile phone or devices. Ignoring each other and just not talking.

I must admit we are becoming more and more reliant on the internet for our information. As you are sat at home watching a movie and your partner says – “what was he in before?” – you just jump on to the net and have your answer in a blink of an eye. If you want to buy something but are unsure what will be the best model or make then you dive into the net and do a bit of research. You can even use things like YouTube to show you how to cook a recipe. There is so much information out there. I use it a lot to source answers for my clients cash needs. We have now had low interest rates since 2009 and sorry to tell you this but the prediction is that an upward rate change is not expected until 2019. Yes 2019, which means 10 years of low interest rates, with even a rumour linked to the EU Referendum that the rate may go downwards first. Great situation if you are borrowing. I encourage those clients to over pay or link savings to their mortgages. But an awful lot of people have cash savings and no debt. So we have to search to find answers. But searching is only part of the process, we still have to talk.

The internet will provide you with information but you have to dig deep to find the answers you need for your personal situation and I have found it does not provide all the answers. My clients find it helpful to sit and have a conversation about their “Financial Life” requirements. It is a type of conversation many would

struggle to share with their friends and/or family. It is very personal.

As you are reading this I feel you may relate to points such as: • • • •

How long will my money last? What happens to my estate when I die? How do I ensure just my family inherit? When can we afford to retire and how do I ensure I have enough to do this? • When I do which savings should I use first and why? • I have made a list of things I want to do, but can I afford to do them? • How can I ensure my children are not saddled with debt once they have finished at University?

Working with an Independent Financial Adviser is not about buying a pension and discussing if it has grown 5% this year. It is having someone who works with you to help map out your financial priorities. Someone who ensures you have things in place when you hit the bumps in the road. So challenge your adviser - It’s good to talk.

For more information on this matter or if you would like free initial financial advice with no obligation then you can contact Kevin at Bleathwood Financial Services on 01530 417943. Bleathwood IFA Ltd Bleathwood House, 45 Upper Packington Road, Ashby-de-la-Zouch, LE65 1ED. www.bleathwoodifa.co.uk Bleathwood IFA Ltd (FSA No: 516218) is an appointed representative of Sense Network Limited (FSA No: 465124) which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Authority. beauty tips With the change in seasons we should be saying goodbye to the winter and hello to the summer. As the sun has finally made an appearance, so has more bronzed skin, occasional peeling and maybe pink bodies? It seems we have a tradition in Britain to shrug off our clothes when the sun comes out.

Handling Heat with Emma Here at Rose Beauty Services we take your skin care very seriously, as a Dermalogica Expert I am recognised as one of the highest trained skin care professionals in the country. Call Emma 07939 924 991 email rosebeautyservices @outlook.com or visit rosebeautyservices.co.uk to discuss your skin needs.

The allure of the sun on your shoulders might be too much to resist; but remember that the sun is a primary cause of aging and pigmentation, and in this instance prevention is better than cure. Look for a sunscreen that is broad spectrum, as this will protect against UVA, aging rays, UVB and burning rays. The label must say broad-spectrum or UVA/UVB protection. Whilst driving you can also catch the sun. A great idea is to keep an SPF product in the glove box of your car. When you are near water, snow or at the beach, watch out as reflection can increase the intensity of UV. Make sure you are re-applying SPF every 2 hours and immediately after swimming.

Sun Care FACTS & MYTHS...

UVA radiation is an important contributor to premature aging... FACT exposure over time changes collagen resulting in skin that lacks firmness and is prone to deep wrinkles. You don’t need sunscreen on a cloudy day... MYTH UV rays can penetrate clouds all year around which is why you should protect your skin daily. A base tan protects you from the sun... MYTH there is no such thing as a safe tan. A sun tan is your skins defence to being harmed by UV exposure. You need sun for Vitamin D... FACT vitamin D is essential for health. Using a sunscreen still allows the body to produce vitamin D. SPF + SPF = more protection... MYTH Combining SPF doesn’t increase sun protection for example SPF 20 + SPF 15, not SPF 35.

seasonal recipes A really summery platter of grilled peppers with sun-dried tomatoes and mozzarella pearls. Make a day in advance and chill in the fridge Serves until required. Serve 6 with crusty bread.

Marinated Pepper Platter Ready in 1 hour, plus marinating

YOU WILL NEED

• 6 mixed red, yellow and orange peppers • 1 x 280g jar sun-dried tomatoes in oil • 2 x 125g tubs mozzarella pearls, drained

• 2 tbsp capers, drained and rinsed • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 3 tbsp balsamic oil • Handful fresh basil leaves, shredded

GET STARTED

1 Halve all the peppers, leaving the stalks on. Remove and discard the pith and seeds. Place all the peppers, skin-side up, on a grill pan and grill under a moderate heat for 7 to 8 minutes, until the skins are blistered and charred in places. Leave until cool enough to handle, then peel off as much of the skin from each pepper as you can.

2 Place all the grilled peppers, cut-side up, on a large platter. Drain and roughly chop the sundried tomatoes (reserving the oil). Fill each pepper half with some of the tomatoes, along with the mozzarella pearls and capers. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

3 Mix the reserved sun dried tomato oil with the balsamic vinegar and pour over and around the peppers. Cover and leave to marinate in the fridge for a few hours or overnight. Serve garnished with the shredded basil leaves. TOP TIP Instead of mozzarella try another cheese, such as crumbled feta or slices of Brie or Camembert.

Take the classic rich and squidgy chocolate Makes 12 brownie recipe a step further with a creamy milk chocolate mousse topping for the ultimate chocolate lover’s dessert! !

Chocolate Mousse Brownies Ready in 1 hour 30 mins plus cooling and chilling

FOR THE BROWNIE

• 150g dark chocolate, broken into pieces • 225g unsalted butter, diced • 350g light muscovado sugar • 4 medium eggs, beaten • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 225g plain flour

FOR THE MOUSSE

• 100g milk chocolate, broken into pieces • 100ml double cream • 1 large egg, separated • Fresh raspberries, chocolate drops and mint sprigs, to decorate

GET STARTED

1 Preheat the oven to 1800C/fan 1600C/Gas 4. Grease an 18 x 28cm tray bake tin and line the base and sides with baking paper.

2 Place the dark chocolate and butter in a large heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water and leave until melted. Remove from the heat and stir until smooth. Leave to cool for 10 minutes, then whisk in the sugar, eggs and vanilla extract.

3 Sift over the flour and fold into the chocolate mixture with a metal spoon. Pour the mixture into the prepared tin and level the surface. Bake for 45 to 50 minutes or until just firm to the touch it should still be a little squidgy in the centre. Leave to cool completely in the tin.

4 To make the mousse topping, melt the milk chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water. Remove from the heat, cool for 5 minutes then stir in the cream until smooth. Cool for a further 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, then beat in the egg yolk. 5 Whisk the egg white in a clean grease-free bowl until holding stiff peaks, then gently fold into the chocolate mixture. Spread the mousse in an even layer over the top of the cold brownie and chill in the fridge for 3 to 4 hours (or overnight) until set. Remove from the tin and cut into 12 squares. Serve topped with fresh raspberries, chocolate drops and mint sprigs.

your wellbeing

SOCIAL MEDIA

SOCIAL media can be a joy or a curse. If used properly it can help us stay in touch with good friends, share exciting events and help to find romance. However, everything can become too easy and too immediate with little chance to reflect on our actions and choose to do something different. A relationship breaks down and immediately everyone can know about it, which can make it harder to make up. Some young people measure their success and popularity by connecting with as many people as possible and those with only a few close friends can suffer from anxiety that they may be judged as unpopular. Someone makes a mistake and suddenly everyone knows about it and people can bully others whilst hiding behind a digital identity. If we want food, a gift, a partner, gambling, pornography, mild flirtations we can access it with a touch of a button in the comfort of our own home – its too easy. We don’t have to wait to think about it (can we afford it, who will it hurt, might I regret it?) We

40

can take risks we wouldn’t normally take and can become victims of stalkers or people who want to do us harm. So many people now spend their time photographing their experiences to put on social media that they actually don’t enjoy the experience itself.

Social media is here to stay but just check how much time your children or partner spends on it, if you as parents spend long periods of time on the computer think about the example you are setting your children. Consider what this behaviour is replacing and is it enhancing or inhibiting your life. Futureminds can help people who feel they are choosing to stay ‘on line’ and avoiding the real issues. on the beat Hello everyone...

THE New Psychoactive Substances (NPS) Act 2016 came into force on 26th May making it illegal to sell or supply drugs known as so called ‘legal highs’. New guidance around stop search is also being introduced. The new legislation will be policed in a practical and proportionate manner. We are committed to reducing the harm caused by all drugs and will adopt a practical, common sense approach. We cannot do this alone; prevention, education and health services all have a crucial role to play. The Act will also give police the power to shut down websites trading in these potentially dangerous drugs. Operation Nitrox is an operation addressing the issue of ‘New Psych-

oactive Substances’ or so called ‘legal highs’. This includes smoking blends (synthetic cannabinoids), pills and powders. Products include ‘Black Mamba’, ‘Pandora’s Box’, ‘Clockwork Orange’ and ‘Vertex’ among others. Operation Nitrox has three objectives: INTELLIGENCE COLLECTION Developing Intelligence through Police, Partners and our local communities EDUCATION Informing our communities and in particular young people about the risks associated with ‘legal highs’ ENFORCEMENT Working in partnership with Trading Standards to target ‘legal high’ sales and to disrupt the developing market. For more information on how you can support this operation, visit www.leics.policeuk/legal-highs, or telephone Leicestershire Police on 101, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, and quote ‘Op Nitrox’ with any information regarding the sale and/or use of legal highs.

open 4 business

If you’ve y ’ been down to Rushton’s Yard on any of the

sunny evenings we’ve been enjoying recently you may

have thought you’d taken a wrong turn as it’s been

transformed.

THE addition of the new Cocktail Bar, which opened its doors at the end of May, has made a real difference. The outdoor courtyard area now stretches from the rear of Zamani’s restaurant, past Maranello’s Wine Bar and past The Cocktail Bar almost as far as Poppy’s Coffee Shop.

Additional seating and standing space has made the courtyard come alive with a buzzing atmosphere and a Mediterranean feel. With the sun shining and a Mojito in your hand you could (almost) be on holiday. Pejman and Kate; owners of The Cocktail Bar, Maranello’s Wine Bar and Zamani’s Italian Restaurant have been overwhelmed by the popularity of the new bar. Pejman comments: “The cocktail bar has exceeded all of our expectations and the feedback we’ve had from our customers is heartwarming.”

Whatever the weather of room in both the cocktail bar and wine bar to get out of the rain and don’t forget that Zamani’s offers a takeaway service as well as in-house dining so if those cocktails make you peckish you can grab a pizza to take home with you.

Behind the scenes with

Pejman & kate Zamani “WE came to Ashby 25 years ago and initially started with the Pizzeria, the restaurant opened 5 years later and the wine bar followed quickly thereafter.

Ashby has since become the place we call home and we are extremely proud of how it is developing and expanding into a thriving market town. Over the last few years Kate and I have often spoken of the need for a modern and exclusive champagne and cocktail bar and we believe by providing such a venue we will encourage the local community to spend more time in Ashby at the weekends rather than having to travel to the nearby towns and cities.

“...it creates a courtyard full of fun and laughter... a safe environment for all to enjoy.”

Ashby has always had a number of well-kept public houses and the cocktail bar is another addition to the already popular and thriving town centre.

In the period leading up to the opening of the cocktail bar, the support and encouragement of both the authorities and general public was overwhelming and it now gives us great pleasure to have delivered such a business that alongside the wine bar and the restaurant creates a court yard full of fun and laughter with a safe environment for all to enjoy.

As the concept of the cocktail bar began to evolve we have had the pleasure of working with some fabulous local businesses (too many to mention) however a well deserved thank you goes to Mark Pepper, we could not have wished for a better project manager to help us from start to finish.”

in your garden RHS Show Garden Medalist, Francesca Sinclair, looks at how to make the most of your garden and garden jobs for this time of year. Francesca offers a full garden design service - find out more at www.francescasinclair.co.uk

and planting

IT is really useful to park your car off the road and close to your home, but totally paving front gardens is rarely attractive. I would urge you, if the space allows, to do what you can to make your space more of a garden and less like a parking lot! There are lots of good reasons why, including making the approach to your home more welcoming, and helping wildlife.

If you can just plant the edges around the parking space there will be a big impact. A small or narrow pocket may have enough room for climbing plants such as Clematis, Rose or a Honeysuckle and some trellis attached to the front of your house or to your boundary could be the perfect climbing frame. A little more room may allow enough space for a shrub that could bear flowers, such as an Orange Blossom or miniature Lilac; both would fill your front garden with a sweet perfume when the flowers are out. A strip of 40cm could allow mix of Rosa rugosa, purple Beech and Hawthorn giving you a pretty mixed hedge effect. A more formal hedge could be achieved by using one type of plant, such as Privet or Yew. If there was a hedge between all

properties there would be a big aesthetic impact making the view down a street look much greener and attractive rather than just a row of cars. Remember when planting a hedge close to the road that visibility splays need to be maintained. A single shrub or a tree in a garden will make a huge difference, making your home unique, bringing colour to the front of your home and potentially giving you shade, even giving you a shady car space for a cooler car in summer. It is also fitting that a tree can help trap pollution particles emitted from car engines. Materials are available that provide hard standing but still allow drainage. Gravel is an obvious one, but paving manufacturers produce permeable materials and interlocking block pavers can be laid onto a compacted mineral sub base permitting water to run through the gaps. A hard area for paving can also be achieved by hard plastic honeycombed structures with cells that can be filled with soil and then be sown with grass seed. It is also worth remembering that some plants such as Thyme and Bugle can tolerate being driven over and parked on. Some plants are more efficient at capturing rainfall and could help manage storm water. Scientists have shown that Sedums and Salvias retain a lot of water. Houses in leafy areas are perceived as more desirable so combing a parking space with planting will potentially have financial benefits too. Maybe removing a section of unnecessary hard surfaces and filling it with soil is an opportunity to reinstate the plants. By planting extra plants there is improved air cooling, air quality and improved mental and physical health for people who maintain their gardens regularly. Tubs, pots, hanging baskets and window boxes are a welcoming feature. If your front garden has to be totally paved for parking, consider a first floor window box where you could seasonally plant something to compliment your front door – or car colour! The RHS Greening Grey Britain campaign has suggestions for making spaces green www.rhs.org.uk/ ggb Happy gardening.

venture theatre news Although the Venture Theatre is mainly about the dramatic arts, we do like to encourage all sorts of artistic talent and creativity in people of all ages.

Encouraging

ARTISTIC talent too!

THIS year we were delighted that, once again, the Venture Theatre was able to make a contribution to Ashby Arts Festival by producing a piece of artwork for the Outdoor Gallery.

The theme of the festival this year was children’s literature and our art board was created by Indigo Holmes-kellett, currently a Year 11 student at Ashby School. Indie was one of three young people who created last year’s art board for the Venture Theatre but this year she went it alone and produced a superb piece of work which she told us she really enjoyed doing.

As you can see from the illustration, Indie’s art board features a dragon, a mythical animal which features in many children’s books, but which particular one did Indie have in mind? She told us: “When I was asked to paint the board, I had it in my mind that I wanted to paint a dragon; then I remembered a book that my

86

brother had read some years ago, called ‘Lily Quench and the Dragon of Ashby’ which seemed to be quite fitting and so that was how it came about! It’s a book by Natalie Prior, about a family of dragonslayers (bit of a dying breed!).”

Indie has decided that rather than take the A-level route, she’ll be starting a 2-year level 3 B-Tec course in Art & Design at Leicester College in September.

“I really can’t wait!” she says. “During the 2 years I will study a variety of modules, covering far more material than if I stayed on at 6th form and took Art A-level. The added bonus is that this course eliminates the need for me to take a 1-year foundation course in Art if I decide to carry on to university (which at the moment is what I plan!). I’m just so excited about it, can’t wait!” We wish her every success in her future career in the world of art.

Summer Reads book reviews

There are few things better than relaxing on a sun lounger in the garden with a good book. If you’re looking for some inspiration for your summer reads, we have plenty to tempt you with this month.

THE MUSEUM OF YOU Carys Bray

Single dad Darren Quinn’s priority is his daughter’s happiness. But what twelve year old Clover wants most is the one thing that causes Darren the most pain – the story of her mother. So Clover has decided that this summer she’ll find her own answers. Rich in description and dialogue, with endearing, believable characters, this is a very enjoyable book to while away those summer evenings.

MY NAME IS LEON Kit de Waal

When nine year old Leon gets taken away from his mum, he thinks that’s as bad as it can get. But Leon’s little brother, Jake, is young enough to be adopted. Battling with grief for the loss of his brother, Leon finds an unlikely group of friends at his local allotments. However, this is the early eighties, racial tension is high and Leon is determined to find Jake, whatever the cost. This is one of tho those ‘just one more chapter’ books you’ll keep reading until the sun has gone down and the tears have left tracks down your cheeks.

THE HANGING CLUB Tony Parsons

There’s a band of vigilantes on the loose in London. With victims including a paedophile and a hate preacher, the killers are seen by many as heroes – delivering justice where the law has failed. But it’s DC Max Wolfe’s job to stop them. This is the third of Parsons’ books to feature DC Max Wolfe, and could well be his best yet. Ideal for fans of Lee Child and Patricia Cornwall, along with anyone else who loves a good crime novel, The Hanging Club will leave you questioning your own moral code. Gripping.

FLAWED Cecelia Ahern

Another book which examines the idea of perfection, Flawed focuses on Celestine, who lives in a world where nothing less than perfection will be tolerated. Infractions come with a high penalty – offenders are branded as ‘flawed’ and become second class citizens, for life. Celestine knows how to play the game, but a moment of compassion towards one of the flawed has dire consequences. Celestine could now be branded herself. Bestselling author Cecelia Ahern has delivered another cracker. This one’s aimed at a young adult market, but definitely has crossover appeal.

THE SUDDEN APPEARANCE OF HOPE Claire North

No one remembers Hope Ardern. Not her best friends, her parents, or the people she’s running from. Within a few seconds of encountering her, their memory is wiped clean. It’s as if she doesn’t exist. But they leave their impression on her. Now she’s on a personal mission to destroy a new computer program that’s turning people into ‘perfect’ versions of themselves, wiping their personalities in the process. A great book, which raises some serious questions about how far people will w go in their quest for perfection.

ashbeian mtg news This famous saying, attributed to W.C Fields, is definitely not one that AMTG subscribe to.

NEVER WORK WITH children and animals

WHEN we produced Oliver! in 2009 we auditioned over 100 children, invited 36 to stay as two teams for Fagin’s Gang, and E ma Em we still have some of those young people with us today, who will be in our production of the same show in April 2017.

We also found the perfect English Bull Terrier to take the role of Bullseye, the murderous Bill Sikes’ dog. Daisy was lovely, enjoyed the attention backstage, bonded with Chris Head (Bill Sikes) and behaved perfectly. Until opening night! During the play there is a gunshot sound effect when Bullseye is on stage with Bill. Although we had rehearsed the scene using the sound effect, Daisy fled and refused to come back onstage. Bill Sikes didn’t have a dog for the rest of the performance! All was not lost, Daisy’s Mum, Fleur, was drafted in for the remainder of

the week. Fleur was completely deaf, almost blind, and would do anything for a biscuit!

So many of our original Fagin’s Gang have grown up and moved on to top drama schools. Two of our current juniors entertained the guests at our Annual Swing Ball on 28th May, as part of the interval entertainment while the fabulous Leicester Big Band had a break. Emma Youles (13) sang Adele’s “Someone like you” beautifully, followed by Phoebe Dye (12) who sang John Legend’s “All of me”, accompanying herself at the a piano and they brought the p house down. h

We W will be holding auditions for our new Fagin’s Gang, incluo ding the parts of Oliver and the d Artful Dodger, on Sunday 4th A September 2016 at Hind Leys S College in Shepshed and would C P oebe Ph like to hear from girls and boys l in i the area who would like to attend auditions. There will be three workshops for tt d those th diti Th acting, singing and dance and no previous experience is necessary. Girls and boys will be considered for all roles. Please register interest via email to zygi@ntlworld.com Details can also be found on our Facebook page at Ashbeian Musical Theatre Group. We look forward to seeing many young people – hope to see you there.

spotlight on... Each month we turn the spotlight on a local charity and the work their volunteers do to provide vital services or raise funds for local communities. This month, following on from National Volunteers’ Week in June, we turn our attention to a Leicestershire service designed to support local people find volunteering opportunities to suit them.

LAST year Voluntary Action Leicestershire (VAL) handled over 10,000 applications from people wanting to volunteer. Volunteers in Ashby-de-la-Zouch and across Leicester and Leicestershire make a difference to people’s lives every day while also making a positive impact to the local economy. Amazingly, volunteers contribute an estimated £157 million worth of labour across the county in a single year.

“Many people think that volunteering is all about helping someone else – but being a volunteer can really help you too. You can develop more skills, gain confidence and connect with new people who share your interests.”

Abdul Asghar, Volunteer Manager talks about the benefits of volunteering and how people can get involved: “Many people think that volunteering is all about helping someone else – but being a volunteer can really help you too. You can develop more skills, gain confidence and connect with new people who share your interests.”

“Volunteering roles on offer are really diverse as well. We’ve placed people in roles ranging from admin to coaching football.”

VAL also provide support for non-profit groups. Whether you’re a business trading for good, a faith-based institution, a charity, an informal group or any other type of organisation, VAL offers information and advice. This can be accessed online by visiting: https://www.valonline.org.uk/groups or groups can speak directly to an advisor by calling 0116 257 5050 or emailing helpline@valonline.org.uk.

Voluntary Action Leicestershire has been supporting local non-profit groups and volunteers since 1965 and have been part of the local Voluntary and Community Sector (VCS) for 50 years. To mark their 50th birthday they have launched the campaign ‘My Community My Story’. All year, they will collect stories from local people and showcase them to shine a light on the unseen groups and volunteers who are changing lives across Leicestershire. You can find out more, including how to take part, online at https://www.valonline.org.uk/mycommunitymystory If you’d like to join the 189,000 local people in Leicester and Leicestershire who volunteer you can get started by visiting www.valonline.org.uk/volunteers, calling 0116 257 5050 or emailing helpline@valonline.org.uk. They also offer additional help to people who have additional support needs who would like to volunteer and in Coalville they run a volunteering drop-in at the Library between 10am and 12noon on the second and fourth Friday of the month.

storytime “I can’t allow you to eat that in here,” Violet said curtly to the lady who had just stepped through the door, “because of the sculpture.” Apart from the shrieks of children down by the lake, and the whistling of Ted the porter in the courtyard, her afternoon volunteering in the Coach House Gallery had been pleasantly undisturbed until now. The lady looked longingly at the choc ice she was holding. “I just need to cool down for a minute,” she said, and then, “I’m sorry, what sculpture?” “This, obviously.” Violet pointed to the installation by the hall’s artist in residence that filled half the room. The lady looked at the sculpture frowning. “What’s it called?” she asked. “There’s no sign on it.” “Not yet, it’s brand new.” Violet smiled patronisingly. “It’s called ‘The Remorse of the Aristocracy’.” The Coach House Gallery, while sounding very grand was just a converted stable barn, and prone to pigeons roosting in the rafters. Despite that, it was the coolest place to be on such a hot day, and probably the only place to successfully eat a choc ice before it melted. However, Violet’s role was to protect the artwork from sticky fingers and she took that role very seriously.

“I can hardly see how it’s going to make much difference,” the lady said. “Well, that just goes to show what you know about art,” Violet replied tartly. Honestly, sometimes she thought the hall would run a lot more smoothly with no visitors at all. With his trademark whistle, Ted backed into the gallery wheeling a sack trolley.

The Remorse of

the Aristocracy The lady walked around the sculpture slowly and sniffed. “This just looks like a pile of old canteen chairs.” “The artist’s saying something important about the aristocracy.” What Violet most liked about art was telling visitors what to think about it, “And their value in today’s society.” The lady raised her eyebrows. A drip of melted ice cream fell from her choc ice. “You really need to take that outside, madam,” Violet said. “You’re making a mess.” “But the floor is rather dirty already,” the lady observed. As though to prove her point a flurry of pigeon feathers fell from above. “This is a very valuable sculpture,” Violet said, “we can’t have melted ice cream on it.” “But some of the chairs in this so-called sculpture have tea stains on them,” the lady said, and pointed, “and that one’s got a lump of chewing gum under the seat.” “If it has…” Violet hadn’t noticed the chewing gum before, and this lady was starting to annoy her, “it’s because the artist intended it. What he didn’t intend was for it to be covered in choc ice.”

114

“Afternoon ladies,” he said, and began dismantling the sculpture. “What on earth are you doing?” Violet cried, “The artist will go spare if he sees you meddling with that.” “He certainly will if I don’t get this lot shifted before five,” Ted said, grunting over a pair of particularly tangled chairs, “he needs this space cleared.” “But this is ‘The Remorse of the Aristocracy’!” Violet was mortified. “No duck, this is just a pile of old canteen chairs for the skip.” Ted looked up and snorted, “If you’re on about the new sculpture, it’s coming later.” He wiped the sweat from his forehead. “There’s been a delay, what with the heat.” The lady had been watching from the back of the gallery, a triumphant smile forming on her face. “Then I don’t suppose anyone would mind,” she took a large bite out of her choc ice, “if I eat this in here after all.”
