FARMER’S MARKET

Ashby de la Zouch Farmer’s Market: relaunched and all improved

Ashby Farmer’s Market has long been a key destination for locals looking for a choice of regional produce such as fresh fruit & vegetables, succulent steaks, delicious cakes and more. However, from June the Market relaunched with a new location, a new date and a growing choice of local suppliers. The Farmer’s Market will now run on the third Sunday of each month between 9am and 2pm and will be held in North Street car park opposite Hood Park Leisure Centre. It is hoped that re -launching to a more central location in Ashby will increase awareness of the Market – making it more visible as well as offering better access for visitors and lots of free car parking.

beef, chicken and lamb from farms just outside of Ashby. This will be complemented with freshly handmade bread, pasties, pies and cakes, together with fresh fish, olives, cheese, pickles, eggs, honey, soft fruit and much more. Also not forgetting herbs, herbaceous perennials and bedding plants all grown within the National Forest. Producers will have lots of samples on offer so you can taste before you buy. Don’t miss the next market on Sunday 16th July.

There will be a wide variety of local food and drink on offer including award winning pork,

Sunday 16th July 9am til 2pm 10

The Market is HELD EVERY THIRD SUNDAY of the month at North Street, Ashby LE65 1HS.

SCARECROW FESTIVAL

Heather Scarecrow Festival The hugely popular Heather Scarecrow Festival returns this year and will be running from 11 am on Sunday 30th July until 6pm on Sunday 6th August. For anybody who has not heard of the festival before, this is no ordinary scarecrow trail. Throughout the village of Heather the gardens are filled with scarecrows - some of celebrities, some of them topical, many of them cheerfully daft, and all competing for the votes of the people who come from miles around to see them. Having attended the festival last year I can highly recommend it as a great day out which the little ones will absolutely love. Grab your guide and make your way round spotting scarecrow after scarecrow – no two are the same and you don’t have to walk far to spot the next one. Don’t forget to vote for your favourite once you’ve seen them all. There will be ample free parking at Heather St John’s Football Club (LE67 2QJ). Admission is free and guides are available for £2 to help visitors find all the Scarecrows and vote for their favourite. More details can be found on their website www.heatherscarecrowfestival.com as well as on Facebook and Twitter. All money raised through the sale of Scarecrow Guides goes straight back into the village or donated to groups in, or associated with Heather. From the proceeds of last year’s festival donations were made to village groups such as the School & Pre-school, St John the Baptist Church and Heather St John’s Football Club for ongoing projects and equipment.

ASHBY MUSEUM NEWS

Meet the new Mayor of Ashby de la Zouch In May Councillor Jim Hoult was appointed as the brand new Mayor of Ashby de la Zouch taking over from Councillor Mike Ball. We had a chat with Jim to find out more both about the man himself and his new role…. Jim is a local family man based in Shellbrook. He has been a local councillor for twelve years and is currently District & Town Councillor for Ashby Ivanhoe Ward. This is his second term as Mayor with his first running from 2010 to 2011. It won’t surprise you to hear that Jim’s hobbies include a love of vehicles and tractors as many of you will know him through Jim’s Tractor Run & Family Fun Day. This fabulous event, held on Ashby Bath Grounds, returns at the end of this month for the seventh year. Each year it raises huge amounts of cash for local charities; primarily Hospice Hope. As Jim explained;

‘I wanted to give something back to Ashb by’. One of Jim’s first events as a Mayor is a trip to Pithivie ers in France, a town we havve been twinned with for over 50 years. In fact, Jim m was Mayor when the 50 year celebrations took place back in 2010. Key aspects of the role of Mayor include meeting Ashby residents and businesses, supporting local charities and organisations and building up community spirit – all of which Jim iss keenly looking forward to. Look out for updates on our new Mayor in future issues….

IN YOUR GARDEN

Slippery decks–no more! Natural wood is a beautiful material, but using it outside for a deck or a pathway is something I never suggest to clients. This is because timber decking is high maintenance, and usually becomes extremely slippery and hazardous, especially in icy conditions. There are thankfully many superb alternatives to wood in the form of composite materials. These products can be mistaken for real timber, and look fabulous. They are relatively maintenance free too. I recently designed a walkway and deck around a pond using composite boards, and chose a plank style which was heavily grained and appeared to be roughly sawn. The effect was of an old rustic board – without the warping! Often around ponds and areas of natural planting, the deep grain and dark colours can be in keeping with a rural location. There are colours available ranging from nearly black to a variety of browns and greys. The grain can be smooth, giving a modern and minimal effect, or alternatively an enhanced and deeper grain can appear quite traditional. To make these lookalike products realistic, actual real timbers are used to create the moulds for

the grain. Generally the decking comes in planks 200mm wide and lengths of 3600mm. Careful and elegant detailing is possible with bull-nose edging strips, most useful for steps and corners. I particularly like the option of flexible fascias, for creating curves on circular decks or as risers on curved steps. Most of these wood lookalike decking products contain no wood at all and are promoted as highly resistant to algae growth and have very good anti- slip properties. The downside is that they are an expensive material. Some companies offer a 25 year guarantee which is reassuring, particularly considering the financial outlay. There are other additional costs to be aware of. To ensure the warranty is effective, you may be required to use the manufacturer’s own products for the sub base and fixings. Installation details need to be studied as the product has to be handled and stored to the specification and laying guides. That said, these composite deck materials look beautiful in the right place, and are especially good in or next to water.

VENTURE THEATRE NEWS

Although the summer months appear from the outside to be a quiet period at the Venture Theatre, it’s all still happening on the inside, so let us tell you about some of the treats in store for the coming months. Our new season will open at the end of September with a production of An Inspector Calls. J. B. Priestley’s classic thriller begins with a family celebration, which is interrupted by a police inspector investigating the murder of a young woman. As the plot develops, it is slowly revealed that each member of the family has secrets linking them to the tragedy. Readings for this production will be announced very soon, so if you feel you might like to try for a part, keep an eye on our Facebook page. Our Christmas play will be Danny, Champion of the World. Roald Dahl’s famous children’s story comes

to the stage featuring a father and son (Danny) who live in a gypsy caravan. Danny finds himself the mastermind behind an incredible plan to thwart the nasty greedy Victor Hazell. In February, we will be presenting One Man, Two Guvnors by Richard Bean. Described as “wildly, gloriously, deliriously, funny”, it is a modern version of The Servant of Two Masters and was first produced at The National Theatre in 2011. Finally, in April, Jimmy Chinn’s Something to Remember You By will be the final play of our main season. We feel sure that such a varied programme will provide something for everyone and look forward to welcoming you to the theatre in the autumn. Meanwhile, it is still Club Night every Monday from 8pm where new and prospective members are always welcome to drop in.

MONEY MATTERS

If you fail to plan,

you are planning to fail

“If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail”, a brilliant quote by Benjamin Franklin. It is a phrase at the back of my mind used nearly every day, not just within my business. For example going away on holiday, we all write list of things to take, check list of things we need to do and then plan things we will be doing whilst away. But what I find is so many people I meet fail to plan their financial future. They seem to leave it to chance. WHY? I have yet to hear a logical response. The main ones are – “well I am not sure how things will pan out” – “I don’t have a crystal ball”. What shocks me is many of the people I meet are very successful in business or have successful careers, but for some reason they seem to leave their financial future security to chance. Why do they want to FAIL? Then I come across others who have a go at planning. They have a collection of spreadsheets, which they freely admit are hard to keep up to date. Fantastic they have made a start. The common issue I hear is – “but they are just numbers on a sheet – we really struggle to see what it looks like”. My clients are fortunate – they have access to some brilliant software which helps me help them plan. Then visually they can see how things look. This software helps me answer the THREE CORE QUESTIONS my clients regularly have in their minds 1. Will we be alright? 2. Have we enough money? (can we afford to do ….. ?) 3. What happens if? Question 2 comes in a variety of forms. For example, can we afford to retire? Will we have enough money in the future? Can we afford to do the things we want to do? 26

Kevin Cunningham Bleathwood IFA Ltd With question 3 it is all about those what happens if? What happens if we have a serious health problem? What happens if we sell up and downsize? What happens if our money does not grow or we suffer a stock market disruption like in 2008? This sort of software helps people have a clearer picture of what their financial future could look like by putting into place some sort of strategy. Seeing how what they have already accumulated will work for them and how best they could improve things. It helps them visually see the plan, rather than a bunch of numbers on a spreadsheet. It’s a start which can then be regularly reviewed. Financial Planning for your future should not be about trying to work out which is the best pension or investment plan to buy. It should first of all be about understanding what you want for your future, then planning how best you can achieve the things you want, having contingencies just in case the “what if” happens, but ensuring you can afford to do the things you want to do. We suggest you ensure you use an adviser who adopts this approach, because if you do not plan, then you are planning to fail.

ASHBY CHRISTADELPHIAN CHURCH

That all important list… Bucket & Spade - CHECK. Sun cream - CHECK. Sunglasses - CHECK. The summer holiday season is fast approaching and many of us will be looking forward to getting away for a bit of relaxation. Before we leave on holiday there’s always so much to do. We’re regularly running around trying to sort everything at the last minute. In the excitement of going away it’s easy to forget something important. How often have you heard of people arriving at the airport without their passport? Therefore it’s always a good idea to make a list to help us plan and ensure we don’t forget anything important. This also rings true in the rest of our lives. It’s easy to forget something important – we often have so much to think about and do that things just slip our minds. Sometimes the most important things get pushed aside by how busy we are, even pushed so far that

30

they disappear from our lives altogether? The Bible recognises this pressure and the way things can swamp our good intentions. In the parable of the sower Jesus uses the example of a man sowing seed to show different ways we can react to hearing God’s word. In one of the examples the seed starts to grow but then weeds grow around it and it dies. We need to be careful that our lives aren’t like that. We must give God’s word the proper focus it needs, allowing it space and time to grow – not crowded out by the other things that compete for our time. Time and space are precious – sometimes we need to stop, take a breath and make a list of the really important things in our lives.

TECHNOLOGY TIPS

Software Piracy Our local Tech expert, Phil from PC Clinic, is back this month to advise us on ways to avoid becoming a victim of software piracy… Here at PC Clinic we are seeing an increase in software scams, mostly linking to Microsoft products. For many years now Microsoft have had problems trying to ensure that everyone is using genuine software, including their Windows and Office packages. As a repair centre we have seen several cases of Windows 7 Ultimate being installed onto refurbished systems when they are licenced for say Windows XP or Vista. Chances are these have been loaded with non-genuine versions of Windows. Same applies to Microsoft Office – many customers say a friend installed it for us, or it was ‘like it when they bought it’, but this often indicates pirated software. So how do you tell the difference between genuine and pirated? The answer is pretty simple: Genuine licence stickers attached to PC or laptop – matching what is installed Licences readily available on Microsoft labels or keycards for Office products So if you have Windows 10 installed when it says XP on the label, this isn’t genuine. Likewise if you have Office 2016 with no licence key (or approved email from an authorized online reseller with the licence key noted), it is likely to not be genuine. Only exception is that Windows 7 and newer systems could be upgraded to Windows 10 thanks

38

to Microsoft’s free upgrade in 2016. Sometimes systems have newer versions of Windows thanks to the MS Refurbisher Scheme, but there must be an additional label present and the system bought from an approved MS Refurbisher. Always purchase from known and trusted sources, and avoid the “too good to be true” deals as these are often counterfeit software or those that do not meet the licencing guidelines. For more information on Microsoft and piracy visit, www.microsoft.com/piracy PC Clinic Technologies Ltd are Microsoft Partners and MS Registered Refurbishers. We only retail genuine software, and do not condone the use of unlicenced software. To make sure you’re helping Microsoft to eliminate the use of pirated software, visit your local Which Trusted Trader approved Computer Store in Huntingdon Court, Ashby. Don’t become a victim of Software Piracy! Article by Phil Barnfield, PC Clinic – Huntington Court, Ashby.

BODY MATTERS

Strokes:

the importance of ACTION

Public Health England first launched the Act F.A.S.T campaign in 2009 and most of us are familiar with the associated TV and cinema advertisements. Some may find the images disturbing but the message they give is ‘The faster you act, the more of the person you save’. This is because early diagnosis and treatment may improve the chances of recovery and significantly reduce the resulting disability. Emergency services will treat a suspected stroke as a high priority. Don’t be tempted to wait to call for help because symptoms might clear and it’s just “a funny turn”. If you, or somebody you know, has had the signs of a stroke and they have come and gone away again it could have been a ‘mini stroke’ or TIA (transient ischaemic attack) If you suspect this has happened make an urgent appointment to see a doctor or visit a walk in centre because a TIA is a warning sign that needs investigation. Treatment may prevent a full stroke at a later date. Living a healthy lifestyle can reduce the risk but unfortunately strokes do happen. Afterwards

there may be many ongoing symptoms, some of which are visible and obvious, some not so. As a result rehabilitation can be complicated, needing a specialist approach and achieving the best possible outcome can take a long time. BEAUTY TIPS with our resident beauty expert, Emma from Rose Beauty!

What To Expect When You’re Expecting

Pregnancy is an exciting journey, but it comes with its own set of skin challenges and concerns. Every part of the body goes through changes during pregnancy, and the skin is no exception. The Mask of Pregnancy Melasma is the most common change associated with pregnancy. It is characterized by irregularly shaped light or dark brown patches of hyperpigmentation usually found on the chin, upper lip, cheeks and forehead. Tip: Melasma can be minimized by limiting exposure to ultraviolet light. Daily use of an SPF 30+ is a must. Physical sunscreens like Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide are preferred choices, as they reflect heat away from the skin – perfect for the pregnancy-flushed face. Psoriasis, Eczema or Rosacea Symptoms can worsen for some, while conditions can improve for others during pregnancy. Reasons for this are unclear and it depends on the individual. Tip: I recommend a gentle skin care routine. Mild gel/ cream cleansers and products, containing calming and soothing ingredients such as Oat Kernel, Sunflower

Seed Extract and Borage Seed Oil reduce irritation. Acne The influx of hormones during pregnancy can stimulate the sebaceous and sweat glands, resulting in more perspiration and breakouts. Tip: Keep the skin clear and shine-free by opting for oil-absorbing clays such as Bentonite and Kaolin and sebum-regulating Niacinamide. Becoming a new mother is challenging enough without having to navigate through a confusing maze of skin care ingredients and treatments. As a skin professional I’m here a little help make skin care during pregnancy a safe, comfortable and joyful experience.

S E RV E S Ready in4 1 hour 3 minute 0 s

If you fancy a meat-free supper this week then try this delicious filling vegetarian lasagne. Serve with a crisp green salad and crusty bread. YOU WILL NEED l l l l l l l l l l l l

TOP TIP Instead of the spina ach you could use lightly fried slicess of ak courgette or sliced beefstea tomatoes.

METHOD 1. Preheat the oven to 200C, Fan 180C, Gas Mark 6. Place the diced butternut squash, onion, garlic and oregano in a large roasting tin and drizzle over 2 tbsp of the olive oil. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and toss to mix. Roast in the oven for 20-25 minutes until the squash is very tender. Cool for 10 minutes. 2. Transfer everything from the roasting tin (including any pan juices) to a food processor and process until smooth, adding a little hot water if needed to give the mixture a spreadable consistency. 3. Steam the spinach for 1-2 minutes until just wilted. Place the lasagne sheets in a large shallow heatproof dish and cover with boiling water. Leave for 3-4 minutes to soften then lift out of the water

58

and drain on kitchen n paper. Mix together the rico otta and cottage cheeses in a bowl along with half the mozzarella ccheese. 4. Spread a third of the squash mixture in the base of a square medium-sized ovenproof dish. Top with a layer of wilted spinach followed by a layer of the cheese mixture and a layer of lasagne sheets, cutting them to fit if necessary. 5. Repeat the layers two more times, finishing with lasagne sheets and a thin layer of the remaining cheese mixture. Scatter over the rest of the mozzarella cheese and the pine nuts, and drizzle over the rest of the olive oil. Bake for 25-30 minutes until the cheese topping is golden and bubbling. AMTG NEWS

Calling AMTG New Members! “My Fair Lady” comes to the 400 Hall, Repton School from 10th-14th April 2018 and we would love to hear from you if you would like to join us for this spectacular show which has just been released after several years’ absence from the amateur stage. We will be holding our New Members’ Auditions on Tuesday 5th September at 7.30pm in Ashby – please email enquiries@amtg.org.uk for further details and to register interest in attending. Spokesperson for AMTG Karen Jamieson recalls her own audition, way back in 2000 and says “I had learnt a whole song from Sunset Boulevard, practised it, performed it in front of the mirror, and became “Norma Desmond”. On New Members’ night, in front of the panel (Chair, Musical Director and Director), I launched myself into my performance, only to be stopped after the first two verses when I was invited to join. “Those who know me won’t be surprised to hear that I asked to be allowed to finish the song!

Since that day I have been very fortunate to play many rôles in AMTG productions – my favourite being Golde in Fiddler on the Roof. You won’t regret joining AMTG, in whatever capacity – you will not find a more welcoming group and will be a part of our “family” from the moment you walk through the doors.” We would love to hear from anyone, age 14 years and upwards, to come along to our New Members’ night – we promise you won’t regret it, and you will start your theatre journey with one of the most professional and successful amateur groups. We look forward to hearing from you also if you would like to be part of our technical/backstage team. Contact enquiries@amtg.org.uk and also visit our website amtg.org.uk to see what a great company we are!

YOUR WELLBEING

Helping children feel safe after shocking events in the media The recent tragic events in Manchester have impacted on many adults, who if not directly involved, will have seen and heard distressing stories and images. Whilst such attacks are rare, due to the media coverage they can leave people feeling vulnerable and nervous. Children can feel especially nervous as depending on their age and understanding they may be confused and frightened and their parents may feel uncertain how to talk to them about such events. An important point to remember is that children process things differently. Young children may not understand that they are seeing the same event repeatedly and experience replays as separate horrific events. Even if you manage to shield children from difficult news, they can pick up on adult’s anxieties or discussions overheard at school or through social media. Children will often show their concern and worries in behaviour rather than verbalising them. So if you find you child is unsettled, has difficulty sleeping, becoming more angry without cause, being more clingy can indicate they are struggling.

Help children make sense of what’s happened in words they understand and which are age-appropriate. If children are asking questions, they are trusting you rather than keeping worries inside. Often children want to know ‘why?’. We would suggest that answers are simple, limited and honest, explaining that no one can completely understand why anyone could be so cruel to hurt others. Providing lots of reassurance and keeping to routines will help children feel secure. FITNESS TIPS

Fitness Republic

Get to know us!

Health & Fitness Club for Everyone

Here at Fitness Republic we are a health & fitness club for everybody. Everyone is welcome, whether you are a seasoned athlete or a beginner looking to start your own fitness journey, we are always happy to help and always keep an extremely happy friendly atmosphere in the gym, so here’s a little bit about our team so you can get to know us before you come visit us.

Simon Pellecchia - Co-Owner, Personal Fitness Coach, Group Class Instructor I began weight training at the age of 13, spending every night after school lifting weights. I was an avid football player so it really helped me improve my game, as well as improve the overall aesthetics of my body. Soon after school had finished I got my first job in a gym, where I really improved my knowledge and gained valuable experience in the fitness industry, learning everything to do with training, body composition, and how a fitness club runs. Fast forward to today and I am loving owning my own club, I have made so many friends, and love helping people become better versions of themselves and seeing their confidence grow. It’s so rewarding. In my spare time, I play lead guitar in a U2 Tribute band called U2UK. We have been established for 15yrs now, and have played all over the UK and in Europe too. Most notably playing at a U2 after show party in Amsterdam! 78

Sarah Pellecchia – Co-Owner, Social Media, HR I have worked in leisure management with renowned companies for over 20 years. In many different areas ranging from reception, sales and reservations to marketing, event planning and conferencing. I was pregnant with our second daughter when we opened Fitness Republic. Both our girls love coming to the gym and exercising especially Kids Zumba. They can’t wait for the Fit Kids Club to start in the summer. I love cooking, holidays, spending time as a family, watching Simon’s band and of course I love working with the team at Fitness Republic and we are always arranging social or charity events so look out for those!

For all the latest news and events follow us on Facebook & Twitter

I am also a website designer and built the Fitness Republic website along with websites for some of our members too! I have a massive interest in human psychology and behaviour, having studied this in detail over the past 15 years, and i believe my knowledge and experience in this area helps tremendously in the results we achieve in the gym.

Liz Toll - Personal Fitness Coach, Group Class Instructor, Nutrition & Lifestyle Coach. I joined the Fitness Republic team over 4 years ago and am loving it. I finally found my perfect profession after leaving the police force. I like to keep adding to my qualifications and will soon be doing massage therapy too. I am also a boxing coach which I really love and as well as 121’s I teach 2 Boxfit classes a week. I specialize in female 121 and group training, I absolutely love getting real results for my ladies! If you know me then you know I love dogs with a passion, I have an amazing Bichon Frise called Wilbur. If you see me out dog walking say hi!

Ben Pellecchia - Personal Fitness Coach, Website Designer I love working at Fitness Republic. It is such a friendly and nice place to be, we have some great members many of whom have become good friends and everyone who works here have become like family (some of course are family!). Seeing people succeed in their goals and the confidence it gives them is brilliant and knowing I have had a part to play in this gives me great pleasure.

Marcus White - Manager, Personal Fitness Coach, Sports Massage Therapist, Group Class Instructor I am a personal trainer and class instructor here at Fitness Republic, I love teaching spin, I also do deep tissue and sports massage therapy. I enjoy my training and fitness and am passionate about helping other people reach their goals and lead a healthier life. I compete in Men’s physique competitions and managed to place 3rd in the UKBFF North championships last year, I am currently preparing for my next show. In my spare time I like going to a lot of music concerts and to see comedians and festivals from Leeds to Download. Meet the rest of the team in next month’s issue...

Pennie Blatchford – Advanced Cosmetic Procedures Effective removal of benign skin blemishes for men and women

Blood Spots These bright red blemishes, also known as Cherry Angioma or Campbell de Morgan Spots, do not blanch when pressure is applied. They are caused by leaking blood vessels under the skin and while most are flat to the surface of the skin, larger ones can be domed and can even feel quite fibrous to the touch. More common in men than women and tending to increase with age, they can occur anywhere on the body though they are most commonly found on the torso. Younger people can also have them and teenagers may find them particularly embarrassing as they can be very obvious on younger, fairer skin. Small ones can be amazingly easy to remove using advanced electrolysis as a single leaking capillary can be treated in a matter of a seconds. Larger ones can take a little longer but the blemish is normally completely removed with a single treatment. ON THE BEAT From Wednesday 1st March, tough new penalties for driving while using a mobile phone came into force. Drivers now receive six points on their driving licence and a £200 fine - double the previous penalties. These changes will have a significant impact on young drivers in particular as they risk having their driving licence revoked following a first offence. Motorists in the EMOpSS (East Midlands Operational Support Service) region – Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and Northamptonshire - will no longer be offered the opportunity to go on a driver awareness course. Chief Inspector Mark Garthwaite is the lead for roads policing within EMOpSS, he said; “We hope that these tough new penalties will make motorists realise that driving while using their phone is as unacceptable as drink driving. What is concerning is that drivers aren’t just making phone calls, unbelievably, they are texting and using the internet as well! Far too often we see the tragic consequences of other motorists’ selfish actions which can tear families apart. Please don’t take that risk”. National Police Chiefs’ Council Lead for Roads Policing, Chief Constable Suzette Davenport said;

S

“Tougher penalties are a step in the right direction, but police forces and partners are working to make it socially unacceptable to use a mobile phone at the wheel. It’s about more than what you might have to pay as a penalty – you could hurt or kill an innocent person on the roads by checking a text or taking a call. “Don’t do it – and don’t let others take the risk either.” You can follow the campaign on social media using the hashtag #itcanwait or follow the RAC campaign with #PhoneSafe and @PhoneSafe If you have any questions relating to using your mobile phone whilst driving please visit Ask The Police PC MARK ARJOO Tel: 101 Voicemail ID: 1667 e-mail: mark.arjoo@leicestershire.pnn.police.uk

ASHBY MUSEUM NEWS

July Museum News On June 27th we were delighted to welcome Glenfield U3A to the Museum. They were given a town history walk, lunch and a talk on Ashby as a Spa Town. We will be equally pleased to host any Ashby, or surrounding history group, for walks and talks tailored to their interest. More than 30 of our volunteers attended a coffee morning in May, when they were given a short presentation by the chairmen of the Trustees and Friends committee. Some lively discussion ensued and everyone had a great time. Why not come and join this wonderful group – you will be given a very warm welcome. Just come to the museum (Monday or Wednesday morning) or call 01530 560 090. Over the Whitsun Bank Holiday we were pleased to be included in the Ashby Arts Festival – Lesley Hextall’s photographs were highly commended. The 2017 edition of Ashby Past and Present is now available. Contributions this year include Louch’s Commercial School: Rev. W.H. Coleman, botanist,

90

geologist and schoolmaster: Rev. Thomas Bate and the Ashby Parish Library: The Briggs Brothers and two book reviews. The new temporary exhibition ‘The Past and Material Culture’ will run for the whole of June and July. HANDS ON ARCHAEOLOGY AT ASHBY MUSEUM is on Saturday 22nd July from 11am to 4pm have a go at excavating your own finds and making your own timelines. Create your own artwork inspired by the past and its peoples. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Friends of Ashby Museum Martin Vaughan’s illustrated talk in May on local wildlife photography was very well received and the Museum would like to thank all who attended.

ROADSHOW

COMES TO TOWN Krugerrand

Breitling

THE EAST MIDLANDS ANTIQUES ROADSHOW arrives in The Royal Hotel, Station Road, Ashby De La Zouch LE65 2GP and offers local people the unique opportunity to come along and have a free valuation of any item and possibly be made a firm spot cash offer without any obligation. Mr Franks recalls an instance the last time East Midlands Antiques were in the area, when a couple came along with a selection of old broken and incomplete rings, a few items of unusual jewellery and an old broken gentleman’s wristwatch, expecting only a small amount and they were totally amazed to receive over £2,000. Another astonishing story was when a crystal vessel estimated at just £100-£200 was sold for £220,000. So why not take this chance to search through your attic, drawers and cupboards, to see if you could also be sitting on a fortune. Don’t be afraid or embarrassed. You will find our representatives most helpful, courteous and friendly. There is no obligation to sell, so if you just require a free evaluation, no problem. All transactions are strictly cash.

Amber Urgently Required

Mr Franks said the reasons for choosing the area are numerous. Many valuable articles were found in the last visit to the area. For instance on one occasion this year a Rolex, valued at £2,000-£3,000 fetched a staggering £48,000. The hotel is well known to local residents and is well placed with plenty of car parking available.

BOOK REVIEWS

Summer Escapes

From future catastrophes to whole new worlds, this month’s reads are pure escapism. The Night Brother Rosie Garland Two souls – one body. Nineteenth century Manchester is home to Edie by day and Gnome by night. But as both start to resent the other’s presence, an internal war breaks out which threatens to tear them apart. Throw in suffragettes, love affairs and family dynamics, and you have a truly absorbing read. If you enjoyed Erin Morgenstern’s The Night Circus, or anything by Angela Carter, this book is for you.

The Space Between the Stars Anne Corlett Jamie survives a virus that’s wiped out most of humanity. She’s on a planet far from home, and far from Daniel – the man she once loved. Together with the handful of other survivors she finds, Jamie sets out on the long journey across the stars back to Earth. If you’re not a scifi fan, don’t let that put you off. The Space Between the Stars is much more about human relationships and fragile societies than it is about space ships. This has summer bestseller written all over it.

Menagerie Rachel Vincent A travelling carnival has come to town, complete with its menagerie of fantastical beings. Delilah has always thought herself human, but her reaction at the exhibits’ treatment is anything but, and she is locked away and put on display herself. Delilah befriends her fellow captives, refuses to accept her slavery and forms an uneasy alliance with one of her ‘handlers’. But is escape really an option in a world where she has fewer rights than an animal? An easy, enjoyable read, perfect for the sun lounger.

Naondel Maria Turtschaninoff 19 year old Kariba falls for a powerhungry young man and reveals to him the secrets of her family’s spring: it can foretell the future and bestow health or harm. Once Iskan has harnessed the spring’s power, there is little anyone can do to stop him. He starts collecting women to his harem, treating them as little more than playthings. Naondel is told from the point of view of Kariba and the other women, over the span of several decades. Beautifully written, and at times quite harrowing, this will stay with you long after you’ve turned the last page.

A Wizard of Earthsea Ursula K. Le Guin A boy wizard learning to control his powers, mystical lands, magical battles, dragons – this book has them all. First published in 1968, A Wizard of Earthsea tells the story of Ged – a boy who saves his village from attack and is sent to train to be a wizard. He learns to control his power, but accidently unleashes a shadow creature that nearly destroys him. Like Rowling, Tolkein and numerous other fantasy writers, Le Guin’s work will appeal to older children and adults alike.

94

The Girl of Ink and Stars Kiran Millwood Hargrave Isabella’s village is under the control of the ruthless Governor Adori, but the surrounding woods are under the control of a force even more dangerous. Isabella dreams of crossing the forest and charting the Forbidden Territories. A girl is found dead, and Isabella’s friend, Lupe, goes missing. With nothing to guide her but an ancient map, her beliefs, and her determination, Isabella sets out to rescue Lupe. This children’s book has gained rave reviews and while it lacks the depth needed to truly appeal to an adult audience, it’ll keep 9-12 year olds enthralled.

PET’S CORNER

Beware of ticks

when walking your dog

Ticks pose a serious health risk to your dog during the summer and early autumn months, particularly if you take them for walks through bracken and heather. If your dog has a long coat, a tick will barely be noticeable on the skin, so it’s important that you physically check their body when you finish your walk.

other method ds of removing ticks exist, ticck removers allo ow you to twist and p pull the tick from your dog, bringing the entire body away.

What does a tick look like? Ticks are tiny spider-like creatures that attach themselves to a ‘host,’ and feed on their blood. Once they start to feed, the tick increases in size and becomes more noticeable to the human eye. Although it’s tempting to pull a tick from your dog, part of it is likely to remain under their skin which can have serious health consequences in the months that follow. You can buy a dedicated tick remover from your local pet shop or veterinary practice. Although

Why are ticks dangerous to your pet? Ticks cause Lyme disease, or Lyme borreliosis, in dogs, but signs of illness don’t commonly appear until several months after they have been bitten. Symptoms include: • High fever • Loss of appetite • Lethargy • Swelling of the joints • Swollen lymph nodes Once diagnosed, a prolonged course of antibiotics can be used to fight the infection, but some dogs may continue to experience recurring symptoms throughout their life.

HOW TO RETIRE WHEN YOU WANT TO 1. Start a pension – it may be obvious, but if you don’t put money in, you can’t take it out. 2. Claim your tax relief – even if you don’t work the government are so keen for you to bolster your pension savings that they will add money too. For example, for every £100 you save the government will give you £25. If you are a top rate tax payer it can be even more, £125 could cost you as little as £68.75. 3. Don’t opt out of auto-enrolment pensions – if your company will give you money for a pension, take it. You wouldn’t decline a pay rise, don’t decline a pension. 4. Look after it – you wouldn’t expect a car to run well if you didn’t check the oil and tyres from time to time. Pensions need to be ‘serviced’ too. 5. Do you know where all your pensions are? They may need to be reviewed. 6. Be realistic – you can’t put away 5% of your salary for 20 years and expect to live like a king for 40. Try to save a little more each year e.g. share a 3% pay rise with your pension: 2% today, 1% for tomorrow

7. What’s the target? – it depends what you aspire to do in retirement, but a much-quoted figure is to divide your age when you start saving by two and contribute this as a percentage of your earnings. For example, if you’re 30 when you start you should aim to save 15% of your earnings. It can be adjusted over time. 8. Don’t leave the planning until the end – knowing your options, understanding where you’re heading and adjusting along the way will ensure that your pension will do a good job. 9. A note of caution – only put in what you can afford. You can only access funds on retirement after age 55. 10. What if I die? – Its likely you will retire, but if you die before retirement you can leave your pension to your partner and/or your children. Pensions are now part of sensible estate planning strategies.

If you would like to arrange a free initial consultation to discuss your retirement plans or to look at any other financial needs, please contact Ian Staley on 01530 567020.

PARENTING

Top Tips to Help Your Child Sleep Late nights, early mornings and nighttime wanderings can really have an effect on your child’s wellbeing (and your stress levels). If your child is struggling to sleep, these tips might help. Get into a routine According to Jessica Alexander of The Sleep Council, a bedtime routine is vital. She told the NHS, “A bedtime ritual teaches the brain to become familiar with sleep times and wake times. It programmes the brain and internal body clock to get used to a set routine.” Ban screen time before bed The blue light emitted by smartphones, tablets and other digital devices has been found to disrupt sleep. A Norwegian study of 10,000 teenagers found that the more time the teenagers spent on electronic devices during the day, the less sleep they got. So keep phones, tablets and TVs out of your child’s room and ban them from being used for at least an hour before bedtime. Get plenty of exercise and fresh air Both exercise and time spent outdoors have been found to promote a better night’s sleep. So take the kids to the park, or play out in the garden in the afternoon. Try calming music Quiet, soothing music can help your child to relax. If you play the same song every night, it can even become a sleep trigger. Good choices include Kesang Marstrand’s ‘In the Land of Dreams’, and ‘Hello Night’, which you can find on YouTube, or play direct on www.kesangmarstrand.com. You could also try recordings of white noise, which some children find relaxing. Cut down on sugar Fruit juice, squash, sugary drinks and caffeine can all stop your child from getting to sleep. Try to make sure they stick to water or milk for a few hours before bedtime. And cut out any sugary snacks,

102

or anything that might cause bloating or trapped wind. Even naturally sweet foods, such as honey, can have an effect on your child’s sleep pattern. Plan ahead What excuses does your child use for getting out of bed in the night? What can you do to make it easier for them to stay in bed? Little things, like a bottle of water on the bedside table, or an extra blanket for when it gets cold, can help to cut down on the excuses. Make peace We all find it hard to get to sleep if we’re worried or stressed. Your child is no different. If they’re upset because you’re cross, or if they’re worried about an argument from earlier in the day, they might struggle to drop off. So try to make peace and keep calm. And take time to discuss anything that might be bothering them, from exam nerves to fall-outs with friends. Find out what works, and stick to it All children are different, and the perfect solution for one might not work for another. Some parents swear by bathing their child before bed; others find a bath wakes their child up. A few drops of lavender essential oil on their pillow helps some children to drop off, while others just dislike the smell. Some children sleep better in complete darkness; others need a nightlight to feel secure enough to rest. As with all parenting, there is an element of trial and error involved, but when you find what works for your child, build it into your daily routine.

SPOTLIGHT ON...

B B Q for heroes 20177

n serving the nation

Back in April we shared details of the Bake for Heroes events running across the country and urged you to don your apron and get involved. Now it’s the summer and you may have swapped your oven for the BBQ and your kitchen for the garden but you can still offer your support. This month, Help for Heroes (H4H) are asking that when you BBQ, you BBQ for Heroes and turn it into an opportunity to fundraise for our wounded, injured and sick service personnel, veterans and their families. The ‘BBQ for Heroes’ campaign takes place from Saturday 15th to Sunday 30th July 2017, however if this isn’t convenient simply choose a date that is. To register or for more information visit www. bbqforheroes.org.uk or call 01980 846459. Help for Heroes supports those with injuries and illnesses sustained while serving in the British Armed Forces. Whether you invite family and friends over for a BBQ in your garden in exchange for a donation or arrange a bigger community event, it all makes a difference to the support H4H can provide. Everyone who registers and raises money for H4H will be entered in to prize draw to win a Napoleon charcoal barbecue. Mark Elliott, Head of External Operations at Help for Heroes: “What better way to support our nation’s heroes, than by firing up the BBQ for an afternoon or evening of fun with friends, family or colleagues. Good food, good company and all for a good cause!”

110

How to get involved:

w To register to take part visit www. bbqforheroes.org.uk or call 01980 846459. A free fundraising pack will be sent to everyone who registers a BBQ for Heroes event, to help make each event a success. The packs include collection boxes, bunting, balloons, a BBQ for Heroes banner, plus additional items. Don’t forget to share your pictures on Twitter by using the hashtag #BBQforHeroes BBQ for Heroes Five Facts • More than £200,000 has been raised since BBQ for Heroes was launched. The aim is to break through the £250,000 this year.

In this game his attacking style was demonstrated yet again.

You can play against young and old in the ancient game at the Ashby Ivanhoe Chess Club. Meets Thursdays at 7.30pm at Ivanhoe Social Club. Contact Neil Roberts on 01530 455957 for details.
