Ashburton District Council is encouraging the community to enter deserving voluntary groups and organisations into the 2017 TrustPower Ashburton District Community Awards, which opened earlier this month. The Awards, which run in partnership with Council, are a chance for the community to celebrate and recognise the many local volunteers working to make Ashburton District an even better place to live. Since the Trustpower Ashburton District Community Awards began in 2001, more than $82,000 has been given away to voluntary groups and organisations. This year, more than $5000 is up for grabs. Ashburton District Mayor Donna Favel says Ashburton is full of hard working

groups deserving of recognition for their selfless efforts. “One of the great things about my job is meeting the people who make Ashburton District such a special place to live. We are a community of strong volunteerism and it’s inspiring to see the efforts of so many locals who give their time and skills to help others,” she says. “These groups make such a big difference to our community, so if you know of a deserving group, please put their name forward.” Trustpower Community Relations Representative Abbie Siely says entering a group in the awards is a great way to give something back to the people providing the district with so much.

“Many activities, events, projects, programmes, sports, and services are provided thanks to the region’s hard working volunteers. But often they are not recognised for the invaluable work they do,” she says. “Now you have the chance to say ‘thank you’ to these volunteers, just by filling out an entry form. It takes just a few minutes to enter a voluntary group, but the recognition from their community will have a lasting impact.” Entry forms can be completed online at www.trustpower.co.nz/ communityawards Entries for the Trustpower Ashburton District Community Awards close Friday 10 March at 5pm.
