The Core Curriculum For The Dialysis Technician What It Involves _______________________________________ By Austin John - If you are interested in the fast growing dialysis field, check out the core curriculum for the dialysis technician. There is stiff competition among the facilities that provide the training for this field of work. But in the end they all teach the same curriculum, or modules, basically. Some will develop their own unique way to present the information, so as to help the student learn easier. The NANT, or National Association of Nephrology Technicians/Technologists, is the governing body that oversees the job field of the dialysis technician. And therefore must meet their guidelines. To Learn More About Hemodialysis Machine Kidney disease is discussed initially to give a foundation of just why hemodialysis is important. This is a broad topic that the dialysis tech needs to have an understanding of. When kidneys fail, they no longer perform the life-sustaining processes they once did. Unless dialysis is performed on a regular basis on an individual who has little to no kidney function left, death soon follows. The length a person will need this treatment varies from only a few treatments, up to and including the rest of their lives. There are different types of dialysis machines. How and why they are used is important and must be learned to be able to pass the certification exam. Even though the dialysis nurse is ultimately responsible for the patient, and provides guidance during the procedure, a dialysis technician must be knowledgeable in how a dialysis machine works and the different kinds.

Recognizing complications is part of the dialysis technician curriculum. You will be taught how to discover small problems before they become large problems. Around this time in the core curriculum for the dialysis technician you will be instructed on the different kinds of vascular access devices and how they used. The term vascular access means the mechanism by which the blood is pulled from the patient

to be cleaned by the dialysis machine, and then returned afterwards. There are different ways to do this, and some are temporary while others are permanent.

Some require surgery, while others can be inserted in the doctor's office. Knowing what to do when a complication, or potential complication occurs, is one of the most critical aspects of the dialysis technician curriculum. A complication could be as minor as the patient complaining of stomach upset or actually vomiting. This is easily corrected with anti nausea medication. But more severe complications can occur that could endanger the patient. These complications could be an allergic reaction, or a hypertensive crisis. Knowing what to do in all situations is important to the health of the patient. Water balance is a very important thing to a dialysis patient. Because most patients with renal disease can't release excess waste and fluid in their bodies through urination, it can build up to dangerous levels and cause severe high blood pressure. This in turn can lead to life threatening issues such as stroke or heart attack.
