BETTER BUYING POWER FOR SCHOOLS Term 2, 2022 | Summer Issue

New challenges to face but a positive outlook Our member schools have done a marvelous job navigating through the challenges of Covid. So, it is extremely frustrating that now so many schools in Queensland and NSW have been hit by floods. Despite this ASCA is excited by the opportunities that 2022 brings. We have spent the last 2 years strengthening the systems we use to communicate with our members and the value of the service we offer. In particular we have added some excellent new supplier partners to those that we recommend to our members, and we encourage you to look through this newsletter to see what is on offer.

So this year we are looking forward to talking to you all at conferences and trade shows in every state. We have plenty of new information about suppliers to present, and we always welcome feedback from you. Finally, I would like to draw your attention once again to the ASCAplus Staff Benefits program. The last two years have been tough for teachers so we encourage you to bring ASCAplus to their attention so that they can enjoy savings from the many suppliers and brands that participate in

While we have increased the number of our supplier webinars that we promote to our member schools, we have missed the opportunity to talk to you face to

the program. There is information in this newsletter about ASCAplus, and more on our website, but if you have any questions then please call your ASCA Area Manager.

NEW indigenous fabric We’re for flexible learning

SPIRITUAL CONNECTION “It represents the spiritual connection of the Indigenous peoples of Australia. We have strong spiritual connection to our ancestors, the lands, waterways, skies, animals, plants and all living things. Connecting to our spirit through cultural practices gives us our identity and ensures health and well-being. These include ceremonies, rituals, paintings, storytelling, dance, songs, etc. The Dreamtime is the core of Aboriginal spiritual belief, they say it has no beginning and no end. Growing up as a young Aboriginal man I was told after we passed on our spirit returns to the Dreamtime.”

The outcome is quality evidence of overall wellbeing health and the ability to support ‘student readiness-to-learn’, each and every day. Wow! The concept behind WellBe arrived at just the right time. Right now, in today's society, children need an approach like this. I love the idea of matching my movement breaks in the morning with how they are feeling and providing them with quick resources and activities to lift or change their mindset.

The four characters are vibrant and adaptable, allowing emotions to be identified and care to be taken if patterns in behaviour are established. The students in my class love the platform and can't wait to signin online everyday to complete it.

Risk Register System Tool A better alternative to an IT incident is to avoid it in the first instance, which means organisations should take the opportunity to review efficiency and effectiveness of IT security controls, networks and systems to take appropriate action to ensure they are sufficiently robust. RTG’s Risk Register system tool is one of the cornerstones of an effective risk management operation. IT and risk management teams must think proactively and creatively about security controls to mitigate risk, and not just rely on layering more security to protect their data and IT infrastructure. Having an IT Risk Register offers a single point-of-reference about an organisation’s risk appetite, providing a structure and process to enable tracking, managing and recovering from problems, vulnerabilities and cyber attacks as they arise. Using RTG’s Risk Register system tool will support your school by: • Providing a model for managing data and cyber security events that identify, analyse, and solve risks before they become problems. • Strengthening your preparedness to respond to cyber incidents and unexpected interruptions. • Identifying areas where existing processes may be improved, or where new processes can be implemented to better secure your IT infrastructure.

Want to find out more about RTG’s Risk Register system tool, including what our ASCA member special offer involves? Book a demo today by contacting our expert IT Risk & Security consultancy team.

THREE SCHOOL AIR QUALITY CONSIDERATIONS THAT OPENING A WINDOW WON’T FIX by Honeywell

Studies have shown that poor IAQ can contribute to building occupants experiencing symptoms related to asthma, fatigue, irritation, and headache . With more than four million students in Australia spending their days inside primary and secondary schools , prioritizing the quality of air in these buildings is crucial. Opening a window is a solution some schools use to improve airflow in classrooms, but it is not sufficient. Airflow is only one part of the IAQ equation.

schools aren’t designed with equipment dedicated to controlling moisture. Relative humidity is an important factor in maintaining optimal air quality and comfort for students, faculty and staff. Ideal indoor relative humidity should range from 40-60%. The EPA cautions that high humidity levels promote bacteria and mould growth while exacerbating respiratory conditions, while low humidity levels create dry, itchy skin and upper respiratory conditions . To monitor humidity, school facility managers should rely on IAQ sensors that enable the BMS to make real-time adjustments. Ventilation As students continue learning and activities in close proximity, we should expect to see an increased focus on ventilation – with good reason. Findings from a U.S. CDC study showed that incidents of COVID-19 were 39% lower in schools with improved ventilation. Effective ventilation includes bringing in fresh, oxygenated air from outdoors and removing stale (or contaminated) indoor air. For facility managers looking to improve ventilation within school buildings, best practices are to avoid shutting down HVAC systems, increase the number of air exchanges per hour to closed spaces and expand fresh air intake to 100%, or the maximum amount possible. Best Practices Humidity levels, temperature, and ventilation can be controlled by investing in technology that can support healthier environments, promote better learning and even potentially curb the spread of

Temperature Studies have shown that a school’s indoor air temperature can affect the well-being and academic success of students. Low temperatures have been shown to be optimal for airborne influenza survival, with virus survival decreasing the more the temperature increases. On the other hand, researchers have found that higher air temperatures in schools resulted in lower grades on tests that evaluate students’ reading and mathematics

contaminants. The task of improving IAQ may feel daunting for some, but in reality, implementing the latest technologies doesn’t have to be costly or time-consuming. Total costs vary depending on the age of the school building, its size and other factors. A building management system (BMS), while common place in commercial facilities, is less prevalent in Australian schools; mixed building infrastructure, heritage considerations and costs

AIR MONITORING AS EASY AS A–B–C

Honeywell is introducing a new, cost-effective monitor for use in schools that alerts users when conditions are present that may increase the risk of exposure to airborne viral transmission in an indoor area.

The Honeywell Transmission Risk Air Monitor is an easy-to-deploy, portable device that measures carbon dioxide and features a proprietary risk alerting system based on different activity levels within a room. This allows end users to proactively improve indoor ventilation, which according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention1, can help reduce the spread of certain diseases and decrease the risk of exposure among occupants.
