From the Cluttered Desk...

!

Jesus came preaching "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." (Matt.4:12ff) There at the beginning of Jesus' public ministry he invited four fishermen to follow him and he would show them how to fish for people. What was it about that kingdom that got those four fishermen so excited that they left their familiar ways and followed? And why are we not just as excited? Maybe we don't understand what the kingdom is. Or maybe it just hasn't been presented very well. It reminds me of a woman who read somewhere that dogs were healthier if fed a tablespoon of cod liver oil each day. So each day she followed the same routine. She chased her dog until she caught it, wrestled it down, and managed to force the fishy remedy down the dog’s throat. Until one day when, in the middle of this grueling medical effort, the bottle was kicked over. With a sigh, she loosened her grip on the dog so she could wipe up the mess. To her surprise the dog trotted over to the puddle and begin lapping up what had been spilled. The dog loved cod liver oil. It was just the owner's method of application the dog objected to. Sometimes I think something like that has happened to the good news of the Kingdom of God. It has been so poorly presented to us that we have never been captured by its attractiveness and its power. Maybe if we do a little better job of living our faith we will become more excited about it? And in that excitement we might even become better fishers of people.

Repent—a Worthy Word for Lent What pops into your mind when you hear the word “repent?” Is it a dark and somber word for you, perhaps reminding you of John the Baptist’s shouting for people to repent and be baptized? What does the word “repent” mean anyway? Literally it means to stop the way one is going, turn around, and then walk in the opposite direction. It refers to turning away from sin and shallow living and to begin walking through life following God’s direction. Lent, which begins on Ash Wednesday (February 13, 2013), is an opportunity to check our spiritual condition, to repent and to walk more faithfully with our Lord. If we take Lent seriously, we can begin to discover a new vision for life—a more joyous way to live. Lent can enable us to discover the immeasurable benefits of living the Christian life passionately.

Please join us in worship on Ash Wednesday, February 13th. The service will begin at 6:00 PM in the sanctuary.

United Methodist Women The United Methodist Women will have their Bake Sale at the Men’s annual Pork BBQ dinner on March 2nd. All circle members, as well as women who do not belong to a circle, are asked to bake one or more of their favorite desserts, such as cakes, pies, cookies, brownies, etc. and bring to the Social Hall on Saturday morning, the day of the Bake Sale.

Asbury United Methodist Men The Men will leave the church on Monday, February 25th at 5:00 pm for Rehoboth’s Annual Fish Fry. The United Methodist Men will host their annual Pork BBQ dinner on Saturday, March 2nd from 12:00 noon until 5:00 pm. Tickets are $9.00 for adults and $5.00 for children. Bulk barbeque will be sold for $10.00/lb. The UMW of Asbury will also host their baked goods sale.

We all need a plan for our money. Financial Peace University (FPU) is that plan! It teaches God’s ways of handling money. Through video teaching, class discussions and interactive small group activities, FPU presents biblical, practical steps to get from where you are to where you’ve dreamed you could be. This plan will show you how to get rid of debt, manage your money, spend and save wisely, and much more! This class is presented by Dave Ramsey and will be facilitated by Steve and Sarah Kimbrough. Classes begin on Sunday, February 3, 2013 at 3:00 pm. FPU classes will meet for an hour and a half each week for nine weeks. Meet us in the Social Hall and bring a friend!!!

If you are interested in participating in our Prayer Shawl Ministry, please meet with us on the second Monday of each month (February 11th) at 6:30 pm in the church Social Hall.

PRE-SCHOOL & KINDERGARTEN NEWS

Mission: “We Gather to Worship and Learn. We Go Out to Serve and Share.” Vision: “Together as people of God, we will be a beacon of God’s love for our members and the community through sharing the word of Jesus and doing His work.”

Scouting News... Now is the time for Asbury Methodists to re-charter our scouting program with BSA Indian Waters Council for 2013. We do this every year. Our charter fee is $40. The Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts each do their part. Rev. Steve McCormick is our chartered organization CEO. Mr. Doug Stone represents the IWC. Scout Sunday is February 10th. Our new scout trailer was broken into, but nothing was taken. The small trailer we use for cans was stolen. We think all this was done about the same time the Asbury storage building was broken into. Cub Scouts: The Cub pack just re-chartered for 2013. They are in the middle of building their Pinewood Derby cars for the Big Race on Saturday, February 2nd at 10 am. Stop by Asbury and witness the excitement. Boy Scouts: The troop had a great campout at Magnolia Gardens in Charleston. The weather was great for this time of year with temperatures from 50 to 75 degrees….with no rain or mosquitoes! They worked on Nature and Forestry merit badges. Eight scouts and five adults attended. Submitted by Gene Clark, Local Church Scouting Coordinator
