COMPETITION PROJECT UNIVERSITY ROVER CHALLENGE Mars Society, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Mars Research Desert Station, Utah, United States of America (USA) Mechanical Crew Member INTRODUCTION The mechanical structure for 2019 is an improved version of the pervious structure designed for 2018 based on modified rocker bogie system which is highly effective to drive the rover in different rough surface profile. A six-wheeled rocker bogie suspension system is designed for the rover. The mechanical structure is designed focusing on task completion in the competition. The total weight of the rover is 42 kg excluding the science cache box. CHASSIS The chassis is made of 30 by 40 mm rectangular aluminium tube of 2 mm thickness. The profile of the chassis is triangular. The Chassis structure 670 mm long and 590 mm wide. Using conventional centre of gravity was measured and verified via SOLIDWORKS software. đ??śđ??ş =
(11 + 22 + 33)
The ground clearance of the rover is 285 mm. The weight of the chassis is 2.9 kg. Several simulations were done on Solid works by putting simulation force on different points of the chassis. Based on the simulated result we found our structure holds with the acceptable limit.
Page | 3
By focusing on the workmanship, the rover is steadier from the former one. Using SOLIDWORKS simulation centre of gravity was found close to the structure and 190 mm above the ground. Centre of gravity closer to the ground means our rover have less accidental of getting turned over at rocky surface or sharp inclines. SUSPENSION This time we are using a modified rocker bogie suspension system focusing on the workmanship. It has three V shaped legs/rockers. Reasoning behind our choice is, the system keeps all the wheels in contact with the ground most of the time and with much less body movement. Fount and back legs suitable angle 135â ° and 105â ° angle were found using 2D sketch to keep the wheels aligned. Same sort of aluminum as used in the chassis is also used here which made the design progression easier. The total weight of suspension legs is 2.26 Kg. With the suspension system 6 motors and 6 wheels are connected. The weight of the motors and wheels are in total 7.6 and 9.3 kg. ARM The robotic arm has 6 degree of freedom as last time. Due to these 6 degrees of freedom knobs more dexterous and will able to deal with more complex tasks. This time precise machining using Computer Numerical Control (CNC) cut cloths deal with more complex geometries which wrights less than the previous one. The rotation of base/waist is smoother and more stable ensured by a 12V 110 RPM L Geared DC window lift motor. Over 180â ° rotation is possible. Shoulder and arm movement was done by using two 8-inch and one 6-inch 1000 N linear actuator. The degree of freedom of the arm was obtained from Gruebler’s equation: đ??ˇđ?‘‚đ??š = 3 (đ?‘› − 1) − 2đ?‘—đ?‘? − đ?‘—â„Ž n= total links in mechanism jp= total primary joints jh= total higher order joints
Page | 4
The wrist and gripper part were made using 3mm aluminium and steel plates. 16:1 gear ration was used for both the wrist movements (yaw axis and pitch axis) and 15 kg-cm DC motors were used to drive the mechanism. A 300 rpm DC gear motor has been used for gripper. Three fingers mode in a linear motion to grab an object. The gripper mechanism was made using a class cable. With the tension of the class cable gripper fingers move inward or outward to grab and release objects. We feel we can further optimize our design. BODY The rover body is made of 25mm by 25mm aluminium angle. 4mm thick acrylic sheet is used to cover the rover body. The height, width, length of the body is 300mm, 380mm, 500mm. The body has two chambers. The lower chamber is for storing battery and the upper chamber is to house electrical circuitry. Heat proof fire resistant fiber sheet is used to cover base of the body and between the two chambers, so that in case the battery or circuits catches fire the other parts will be protected. The total wright of the body including circuits and batteries is 10kg.
