Lent is a season of turning to God in simplicity and sincerity as we prepare to celebrate the joy of Easter. Our hearts feel heavy as we remember our sins, but we are also confident in God’s mercy and forgiveness.

The three great Lenten practices are prayer, fasting and almsgiving (almsgiving means giving money or other help to the needy). performing these three works will help us to keep Lent as a holy season. Let’s be open to God’s kindness as we promise to pray with more love, avoid treats and collect our coins to give to the less fortunate than ourselves.

LENTEN PROJECT In order to instill in our students the spirit of giving and reaching out people in need, each year, during Lent, our school chooses a charity to which students can make contributions. This year, we have chosen the center in Dashir which serves the needy Armenian children. The Armenian Sisters of the Immaculate Conception are in charge of the center.

Opening Minds and Hearts for Children

Saturday, February 2, 2013, ASA’s Preschool and Kindergarten Teachers attended a seminar called Opening Minds and Hearts for Children presented by Appelbaum Training Institute. The seminar was designed to provide strategies to those who work with children. Some of the seminars objectives were: Implementing strategies to manage stress before it overwhelms you; implementing new creative and fun ideas for dramatic play; and implementing strategies for toddlers and preschoolers, who constantly cry, tattle, bite, and inflict self-injury. Some symptoms of stress (for teachers) include: Exhaustion; being overly emotional; unable to concentrate; unable to make decisions; loss of sense of humor; not able to cope; overeating or lack of appetite; and increased caffeine consumption. Some de-stressing techniques presented: Changing the way you think about situations; one can only change them self and how they look at things; ask for help, even when you’re at work; talk positively; have a visual support system; and have classroom strategies to prevent problems before they happen. Dramatic play provides toddlers and preschoolers the capability to attempt on new roles from the real world. It helps them to develop intellectually. (Benson, 2004) Some ways how dramatic play can help toddlers and preschoolers develop: Cognitive, physical, creativity, emotional, and social.

preschoolers; gift wrapping for preschoolers; picnic for toddlers and preschoolers; and clean-up fun for toddlers and preschoolers. Toddlers and preschoolers tend to cry for attention; frustration; hunger; when they are tired; and when they have physical pain. One should always check for physical pain and provide support whenever needed. Furthermore, preschoolers need to be taught the difference between tattling and reporting. Some strategies include: Using a tattle walkie talkie; tattle box; talk instead of tattling; and tell the president. Self abuse is a serious problem amongst children as young as toddlers and preschoolers. Some ways to handle self-injury in toddlers and preschoolers: Finding the triggers; teaching alternatives; giving communication skills; being a good listener; taking the time to connect; and referring to the child for help if appropriate. (Bowman & Randall) Overall, the seminar was informative, full of abundant techniques for caregivers and teachers. We learned what strategies to implement to manage stress; how to apply new creative and fun ideas for dramatic play; and how to put into practice strategies for toddlers and preschoolers, who constantly cry, tattle, bite, and inflict self-injury. "Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all." ~ Aristotle~Mrs.

KAHAM Games This year marks the 29th Annual Kaham Games. The games opened with a chess tournament, in which our own 1A student Kirk Ghazarian won 2nd place in the highest level of competition. As the chess tournament came to a close, the referees' whistles started to blow in the basketball courts and soccer fields. For the first time, our school has formed a soccer team! And, as always, ASA formed many basketball teams to represent us in the KAHAM games. So come on down and support us!

3rd Grade Trip to California Science Center On Monday January 22, the third grade class visited the California Science Center. They had the chance to explore the Eco-systems exhibit. The students were able to experience a flash food in the desert, Ice in the Arctic, as well as visit the ocean floor and many other fabulous things. According to the students, the best part of the trip was being able to get a close look at the space shuttle "The Endeavour" the Third grade class and parents had a great time! We would like to recommend that you visit the West Coast's largest hands-on museum.

IMPORTANT SAFETY MESSAGE We need your cooperation to insure incident free dismissal time. We ask parents to be more cautious at dismissal time while driving towards the exit to avoid accidents. Please pay attention to students crossing the driveway to get to the basketball court for after school sports. Keeping in mind the safety of our students and parents. Pay attention and drive slowly. Thank you for your attention and cooperation in this matter. On January 23, 2013 the eighth grade class attended Glendale City Hall to accept certificates for giving back to the community and volunteering at the homeless shelter. It was a very educational experience for them, and they would love to do it again.

Lockdown Drill Successful at Armenian Sisters Academy At 9:45 a.m. on Wednesday, February 20, 2013, Sister Lucia made the announcement over the intercom system. “May I have your attention please, we are going into a lockdown.” Please remain in the room you are in. If you are outside, please go to the nearest room. All doors must be closed and locked. Teachers, staff and administration were trained extensively and it was time to put the training to test. Teachers were informed the day before that the drill was going to take place, but didn’t know what time. During the drill the hallways were empty. Sister Lucia and Mrs. Armine knocked on the doors of a few classrooms but no answer until the ALL CLEAR announcement was made. By implementing and practicing a lockdown procedure we are better prepared for a crises situation. We hope that we never have to implement any of our disaster plans, but it is necessary that we do have them in place. If a real lockdown occurs, parents will be guided to Holy Redeemer where we have made special arrangements in case we need to evacuate the school. Under a “lockdown” all school activities will stop, and the focus becomes 100% student safety until the allclear sign is given. Updates and/or notifications will be sent to parents via SchoolReach system. Overall the administration was content and declared the lockdown a success. Students in all grades took the drill seriously.

Mrs. Armine Sherikian
