In this issue, we will continue to search for unique figures in Knowles Building. Let’s discover the colours of Knowles people through their clothes. We have asked all the interviewees the following questions:

Vincent Ho

BSc(Surv) II

Canathy Wong

How do you describe your style? Where do you get your fashion inspirations from? What is your favourite pattern on clothes? Did your style changes from the 你 希 望 你 既 outfit 可 以 show 到 D 咩 個性? What personalities do you want to show from your outfit?

BA(Cons) I

1 ER…..

BA(US) III

BA(ArchStud) I

BA(US) III

Mindset from game to travel Recently, an mobile app called “travel frog” has sparked a frenzy of excitement in Hong Kong. This virtual breeding game, which originated from Japan, has become the spotlight of players from the Asian countries like China and Taiwan. The character, frog can go travelling according to their will and the players will have no choice but let them go. Some people believe that travel frog can bring satisfaction to the players through raising them, and also allow players to project themselves into the travel frog in bid to remove the reality shackles from their mind and go for adventures. This simple game can draw public’s attention and remind us of the meaning of travelling.

Figure 1: Grand Tour

After European renaissance period, travelling, called as Grand Tour (Figure 1), was considered as an activity to acquire knowledge from the perspective of the European nobles. They travelled over the European continents and searched for the origin of arts, cultures and civilization of the West. Until now, the advance of technology has replaced travelling and become the key for learners to acquire knowledge. The purposes of travelling has transformed into consumption for satisfaction and to vent out pressure from the hectic lifestyle. However, people will still feel hollow when they have to face the tremendous pressure in the future again. From my point of view, travelling is meaningless without the element of exploration. Philosopher Michel de Montaigne once said, “Travelling is quite beneficial for us to train ourselves. We will face unknowns and train our minds.” As travelling allows us to flee from the hustling and bustling of Hong Kong, why not spare some time for adventures in foreign countries and strengthen your mind?

Figure 2: Naman Retreat

Among all types of travel, having a long archi-travel is the one I am hoping for. Archi-travel, refers to the pursuit of architecture. This term was originated in the millennium and used to describe the travellers going to the constructions designed by the famous architects. They are different from other tourists, that they will have an explorer’s mind in visiting the architectures instead of merely going for checking in in social networking sites. This kind of travel has soon become a trend nowadays. At first, it was only common among architects. Gradually, several travel agencies has used archi-travel as gimmick to attract customers. It has become popular among countries like Taiwan. Architects may even set up travel agencies by themselves in order to use their knowledge to influence the tourists. Facebook page set up by Lion Travel in Taiwan in 2012 is a case in point. It mainly invites architects to write editorials to introduce special features and share the travel experiences, and uses as promotion of archi-travel tours offered by them. Despite there is only limited routes, most of them are well-designed. For instance, the Vietnam tour visiting the works of the architect, Vo Trong Nghia. By visiting works by Vo such as Naman Retreat (Figure 2), tourists will be able to feel how Vo integrated the architectural design into the traditional Vietnamese bamboo-knitting techniques.

The local travel in Hong Kong While archi-travel becomes prevalent in the foreign countries, it is rare to hear it in Hong Kong. I have read brochures from various travel agencies in Hong Kong in details, yet most of them are leisure tours. This has reflected the market demand of tours is mainly for leisure and enjoyment.

Apart from having fun, it would also be great to visit some unique architectures. I have tried archi-travel before, and indeed it was spectacular. I. M. Pei, a well renowned architect, designed the MIHO Museum in Kyoto, Japan. It is located in Shiga Prefecture, near the town of Shigaraki. It is located in a far country side, and it is not a common place for visitors to visit, due to its remoteness. However people still visit to see the works of the master himself, especially visiting to see the peach blossom garden. I also want to visit that garden myself, therefore despite the commute distance, I went to visit the MIHO museum.

The most fascinating point through archi-travel would be seeing how architects interpret and present local culture, and understanding the architect’s background and story through their work. The design of the museum took inspiration from a Chinese poem ( 陶淵明的「桃花源記 ), when Pei visited the hill, he was captivated by the view, which then further inspired him to build this museum. Pei romantically paints a poetic picture through his architecture. Before entering MIHO Museum, you will have to take a transit car that takes you through a metal walled tunnel, as if you are passing through a time tunnel.

在此我們希望在 ASterisk 最後一本 Transparence 中,留下我們莊期內的最後一句話⋯⋯ Our session has come to an end. Despite it is always hard to say goodbye, we have to admit that our session has passed. We hope to leave one last message to you in our final issue of Transparence.
