Title Level Design; a Designer case study

Overview This project will be split into two components; one section being a case study and completely theoretical based on research & prediction and the other component being purely a technical demonstration. The aim of part one of the project is to research into the Games Design industry, primarily the art of Level Design. The theory will provide an insight from the past and present and recounting my findings and using that data to provide predictions into the future from a purely Designer perspective, analysing that will provide me with enough information as to how this relates to me as a Designer. The second component of the project will be to provide examples based on the theory I will be undertaking, I will accomplish this by demonstrating a video show reel which showcases a level and game play.

Rationale Researching the past, present and future for the Design industry will give me the knowledge and understanding of how the business model works and not just the technical side of Design, in researching and analysing trends I will be able to garner enough knowledge to enter the industry of which I’m passionate of with a wiser array of knowledge as opposed to entering blindly. As for the technical demonstration I feel that this is the best medium of which to showcase my abilities in Level Design, the features are easy to access and if conducted in the proper manner should give me a good edge for showing potential employers beyond this module. By doing so in UDK a platform of which I am accustomed to now I feel this will be the best platform to use given previous training etc‌

Technical Overview For the theory section of the study I will be looking into articles and books about the history of Games Design and not just basic internet research. A history of games module from a previous project provided me with some such knowledge and will be a valuable asset in conducting this research. Current trends will be looked into as part of another on-going project, looking at how technology has advanced and will continue to do so will be a major key on the element of Designers. For the technical side of the study I will be researching the best way and means of capturing content i.e. Software, Camera angles, and speed and lens sizes. I intend to use the Unreal Development Kit to create a small sample environment with game play such as scripted events and potential cinematics. The level will be a simple platformer which I believe will illustrate my point about how Level Design has evolved with technology, from simple platformers such as Super Mario Bros. to the capabilities of today’s development kits. Ethical issues will be researched into as part of the design process to ensure that offensive content is reduced to an absolute minimum, research such as graphic display (gore) etc… Software & Services I will be using:     

Photoshop UDK RefWorks EverNote WordPress

Research topics Level Design in Games – Past & Present: I will be researching into how Level Design in general has evolved from when the industry first began to present day capabilities as well as the impact that this has had on modern day society in terms of fan base, visual exclusivity etc… As this is core to the theory of the project this broad research will be not only invaluable but vital too.

Ethical Implications in Games: Ethical implications in games i.e. cruelty to animals, children etc...Also ensuring no copyright infringement is violated from recording other works. Controversial topics: I will be dabbling into research of controversial topics not so much to avoid making the same mistakes but as examples of Level Design from a different perspective such as critics and media scrutiny. Scripted events: I will be researching into scripted events to make the level more interesting, while I have been studying this field already as part of Level Design I feel that this field will make for more interesting game play and mechanics. Asset placement: While I have experiencing in Level Design and Asset Placement I will be researching further into this such as simple architecture of levels as well as content placement, I believe that research into this should make the environment more interesting in terms of visuals. Camera angles and placement in cinematics: As part of the ‘Would Like’ criteria I will be researching into camera angles and cinematics, if time permits I feel that this would illustrate my theory on how Level Design has evolved and would make for interesting content. UDK (further investigation): While my level will be built using the Unreal Development Kit, I will be researching into further content capabilities of the Software i.e. Kismet scripting, Matinee and post-processing lighting techniques, I’ve always felt that lighting in particular has let my environments down so with adequate research into this topic I feel that it would really make the environment a whole lot sleeker.

Project Deliverables  A published investigation on the theory of Level Design and how it has evolved over the years, I will be investigating on several factors such as Environment Design, Asset Placement & Game Play. The purpose of this is to expand my knowledge into the industry that I wish to enter following the end of the project. 

A video show reel which supports my theory about how Design has evolved from a Level Design perspective. I will record game play from a platformer i will create in the UDK and compare it to game play from a previous title such as Super Mario Bros. The aim of this part of the project will be to expand on the theory and also enhance my capabilities in the Design industry.

An evaluation of my findings based on the research carried out and project creation, the best way to test the theory will be to gather feedback in the form of a survey and asking peers i.e. other students, friends etc…

Considerations Due to time restriction I need to consider what will be feasible for this project, for this I will limit myself to a “Must Have, Should Have, Would Like” approach.

Must Have

Should Have

Would Like

Game play

Game play recorded from older games for a comparison perspective

A couple of different small environments and not just a side-scroller.

At least one complete small environment in UDK

Cinematics in the level to make it look sleeker and place emphasis on 3D space.

My own HUD/UI interface to make the environment interesting.
