Vintage report

Château Cheval Blanc

"Literally anyone can be satisfied with this vintage, whose distinctive feature was a unique technical precision. This 2021 vintage is unmissable, right now."

ARVI is pleased to share its first impressions about the 2021 En Primeur vintage after coming back from the Primeurs week in Bordeaux. The team was wonderfully welcomed by the sumptuous Châteaux, all dressed up. The air was sparkling, full of joy and enthusiasm for reopening the Châteaux doors after two years. Their journey started with a very intense day on the right bank, between SaintÉmilion and Pomerol, the undisputed kingdom of Merlot with its fantastic aromas and the superb elegance which distinguishes its wines. They then moved to the other bank of Garonne, the left one, the widest one, the homeland of Cabernet Sauvignon and of the majestic castles, passing by Pauillac, Saint-Estèphe, Saint-Julien, Margaux and going down to Pessac-Léognan and Graves. The team had again the honor of being guests of the wonderful estates, the privilege of having shared some time with fantastic people, the luck of having tasted the greatest wines of the world. The new vintage is unveiled in a magical atmosphere, among visits, tastings, shows, lunches and dinners that make your eyes shine, among aromas, flavors and sensations that remain imprinted in your memory...this is Primeur week!

2021 an amazing quality of Cabernet Sauvignon, the absolute superstar in blends. Nevertheless, we cannot say we actually have a real «blend winner»! A special mention goes out to white wines. We were pleasantly surprised by such complete wines, delivering a perfect balance between freshness, aromaticity, complexity and acidity... absolutely excellent.

The producers themselves defined this 2021 vintage as the result of spectacular climatic contrasts which entailed a great effort, as well as very hard and precise work. Undoubtedly, this was the year of great challenges and important decisions. Weather was unfavorable and extremely challenging sometimes due to spring frosts and rains. The risk of throwing off whole-year efforts was extremely high indeed. That's why a perfect timing was essential. Someone decided to anticipate, someone else knew how to wait, but a superb job was done anyway. This perfectly embodies what Bordeaux people are made of, how much knowledge, professionality and perseverance are under their skins, and how pure passion runs through their veins. Their profound experience has resulted in a breathtaking precision in the glass.

Why buy En Primeur from Arvi?

Like never before, 2021 is the symbol of how the fusion between nature, technology and man is the groundwork for creating extraordinary wines. The result was once again amazing. While 2020 was clearly the vintage of Merlot, where Saint-Émilion and Pomerol were starring, we can find in

This one is a heterogeneous vintage, where quantities are often reduced by over 50%. Wines are sometimes different from each other, but they always maintain high quality and fully reflect the terroir. We can define these as classic wines, characterized by beautiful aromas, very lively fruits and flowers, supported by a considerable acidity, with a lower alcohol by volume. This translates into lovely, crispy wines, but also fine and elegant. Many comparisons have been made with other vintages: sometimes with 2006, some other times with 2012, and even with 2014. The truth is that 2021 is totally unique. Literally anyone can be satisfied with this vintage, whose distinctive feature was a unique technical precision. This 2021 vintage is unmissable, right now.

Buying 2021 Bordeaux wines means owning unique masterpieces which, considering the very low yields, will sell out quickly. You will be able to choose your favorite size, from half bottles to large sizes up to 12, 15, 18 and 27 liters. This will also be a unique opportunity to make great deals, since you will buy wines as soon as released, at the very best price. Arvi guarantees you the price and the security of delivery of the bottles through direct collaboration with the Châteaux; we will share our expertise and know-how with you and provide you with the best suggestions we can.

En Primeur

What is En Primeur? Why buy En Primeur?

En Primeur is a French term for wine that is sold on a ‘future’ basis – before being bottled. Each spring following the vintage, the great Bordeaux Cru Classé properties present young barrel samples of their previous year’s harvest. This frenzied celebratory event attracts thousands of wine experts, merchants, traders and journalists who flock to Bordeaux to taste and evaluate samples of the new vintage directly from casks. At this point, the châteaux allocate a certain tranche or set amount of their total production to be released at a special inaugural price.

Access to limited production wines When discussing the most sought-after vintages, En Primeur may be the best way for consumers to secure the desired quantities of the wine they are interested in. Certain wines may be produced in very limited quantities, making it difficult to find the wine at a later date, when it is already bottled and released onto the market.

Guaranteed provenance Purchasing a wine En Primeur guarantees its origin. Assuring that the wines have come from a credible source and have been stored and handled in the best possible way. The En Primeur warranty of provenance is also a very important detail when considering to resell the wines afterwards. Bottle format The great thing about buying En Primeur is that the customer can decide in which format the wine is to be bottled. Along with the standard and half-bottle sizes, this process allows customers to choose between larger formats as well, such as Magnum, Double-Magnum and Imperial, some châteaux even offer the lavish 27-liter bottle, Primat. Finally, thanks to the close partnerships developed over the years with the Châteaux in Bordeaux, Arvi is pleased to offer to top Swiss customers the rarest of formats: the Barrique. What does the Barrique format consist in? It consists in whole barrels sold in a limited edition, whose capacity correspond to 225 litres, i.e. the equivalent of 300 bottles in 75 cl format. The customer also has the possibility of choosing into which format the volume of their Barrique will be bottled. A truly unique and unmissable opportunity! Availability Wines sold during the En Primeur campaign are usually released by Châteaux during the spring-summer of two years later. Delivery takes place about two years after the purchase, also according to the conditions of payment and shipment.

2021

The grapes are harvested, carefully selected and crushed to release the juice.

2021

20°C - 32°C The juice is then fermented for more than two weeks using either the “punch down” or “pumping over” method. Some wines are then pressed before blending.

2021/2023

Maturation usually takes place over a period of 1-2 years, primarily in oak barrels. After maturation the wines are bottled, corked and labeled.

2024

The bottles are then shipped from the Châteaux to ARVI.

2024

ARVI receives the shipments and the wines are ready.

Comments and impressions on the 2021 vintage

James Suckling jamessuckling.com

Jeb Dunnuck jebdunuck.com

You can be negative or positive about the 2021 vintage in Bordeaux. The region’s newest year in barrel was one of the most difficult in two decades because of hellish grapegrowing conditions, yet at the same time some of Bordeaux’s best winemakers made excellent wines. We even found a few unicorn whites and reds.

What I love about the 2021s is their purity and freshness, and the top wines convey a sense of intensity without weight. The top wines possess more medium-bodied, elegant profiles, with cool climate-like aromatics of red and blue fruits as well as plenty of floral characteristics. In addition, the 2021s are incredibly transparent and convey their terroir and winemaking clearly, for good and bad. The best wines have sound structure and good overall balance, and while the vast majority will be approachable in their youth, they should age gracefully.

The 2021 Bordeaux have turned out to be such a surprise. Weather conditions were challenging, and yet the top properties turned out gorgeous, classically built wines that will absolutely thrill readers who appreciate freshness and energy. Restrained alcohols and mid-weight structures will remind readers of Bordeaux pre-2000s. The best wines offer a striking combination of old-school classicism with modernday precision.

This year’s “en primeur” tasting seemed like a journey in time. One could say the wines are reminiscent of the 80s, however made with more experience and the modern techniques today. The wines are elegant, however the well made ones have an excellent persistence, depth and length. They offer a convincing potential for a long ageing and promote elegance in Bordeaux again. Arguably it will be a vintage praised for its finesse in the future.

2021 has produced several genuinely great wines, as well as many good to excellent wines that will deliver immense pleasure. Exhibiting the balance and style of a vintage of the 1990s, but benefiting from all the agronomic progress and technical savoir faire of the present, the best 2021 reds are better than anyone could have dared to hope.

2021 has resulted in some exceptional wines in every leading appellation, thanks to improvements in viticultural practices and vinification techniques. […] There are wines that I thoroughly enjoyed tasting, would be thrilled to own and that I believe will be incredibly soughtafter when it comes to actually drinking them.

Château Cos d'Estournel

Saint-Estèphe is the northernmost appellation in the Haut-Médoc, in the Left Bank, and it benefits from an outstanding location along the Gironde Estuary. Vines were already being cultivated during the Roman occupation, and the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries saw the developments of Grand Cru, also thanks to the draining of marshland, which made larger areas of land available for cultivation. Saint-Estèphe also has the distinctive characteristic of producing many other wines (Cru Bourgeois or non-classified) which are nevertheless of excellent quality, if not comparable to certain Grands Crus Classés.

[HIGHLIGHT]

95.5 Château Montrose Château Montrose 2021 represents the importance of the quality of the terroir and its incredible ability to mitigate the excesses of “Mother Nature”. With the teams’ extensive knowledge of the terroirs, as well as decisions based on collective memory, all four grape varieties have been included in the Grand Vin which is a hallmark of a successful vintage 2021 at Château Montrose. The blend consists of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot.

Château Pichon-Longueville Baron

Paulillac, located on the left bank of the Gironde, is probably one of the most famous communes in Bordeaux. Winegrowing dates to the late Middle Ages, although it significantly gained momentum at the beginning of the 18th century, when the area under vines doubled in a short space of time. A favourable climate, ideal soil composition and strict selection of vines are the strong points that have brought Pauillac to the top of quality Bordeaux production. The wines produced here are in fact often considered the quintessence of Bordeaux wines, since at least three of the five Premier Cru red wines are in this appellation: Château Lafite-Rothschild, Château Latour and Château Mouton-Rothschild.

[HIGHLIGHT]

97 Château Lafite Rothschild The 2021 version of Lafite Rothschild is the best expression of what the mythical plateau of Lafite Rothschild is capable of delivering. Cabernet Sauvignon has been fantastic throughout the year and this led to an almost 100% (96%) of it in the blend - one of the highest percentages in the history of Château Lafite Rothschild. A unique blend, that results in a wine with great freshness and density, yet with a thorough balance.

“A brilliant wine that shares some similarities with the formidable 1996.“ — William Kelley

Saint-Julien, located in the left bank of Gironde, is the smallest of the major Bordeaux appellations in the Médoc subregion. It first became famous for its Bordeaux wine back in the 17th century, when the entire area of the Médoc was being discovered, populated, and planted by wealthy aristocrats. Today, it has the highest ratio of classified terroir of any Bordeaux region: by 2015, close to 95% of the entire Saint-Julien appellation was classified! This appellation is traditionally divided into two areas: the southern wines are generally smoother, while the northern ones are fuller-bodied. On average, only 450,000 cases of wine are produced each year in Saint-Julien, but never has the saying that “great things come in small packages” been truer.

[HIGHLIGHT]

95 Château Léoville Las Cases Léoville Las Cases can easily compete with the most illustrious Bordeaux wines including the First Growth. The 2021 vintage is another undeniable success for the Château that managed to produce a classic Léoville Las Cases reminiscent of a hypothetical blend of the 1999 and 1996 - but even better - according to renowned wine critic Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc comprise whole 95% of the blend, with more Cabernet Franc than Merlot for the first time in the Château’s history.

“Classy, nuonced and so expressive. There is so much to look forward to.” — Antonio Galloni

Margaux is the largest and maybe the most famous commune in the centre of the Médoc, located on the left bank of the Gironde. With its temperate maritime climate, the Landes Forest that protects from the cool Atlantic breeze and a shallow layer of coarse gravel over a fine gravel subsoil mixed with limestone, Margaux is home to 21 of the 61 châteaux that were included in the Grand Cru list in the famous Bordeaux classification in 1855. Among them, the internationally acclaimed first growth is Château Margaux, named as the commune itself. In Margaux, the vineyards of each Château are scattered in patchwork fashion amongst those of their rivals, limiting the effects of subtle terroir changes and putting the emphasis on the individual winemaker to create something unique and distinct from the other producers.

[HIGHLIGHT]

96 Château Palmer A Palmer wine remains the intimate reflection of a mosaic of terroirs specific to this beautiful estate. It is also the expression of a unique combination of fleshy Merlots (56%) and silky Cabernets (41%), complete with a touch of Petit Verdot (3%). 2021 offers a trip through time. A vintage of moderation and harmony that harks back to those from the last century. The aromatic freshness, combined with round tannins and a trademark mellow character, make Château Palmer 2021 a grand vin by Palmer, among those whose identity is supported by texture and smoothness.

“I love the classicism on show - a focus, precision and sophistication.” — Georgina Hindle

Château La Lagune

Haut-Médoc is the large southern section of the greater Médoc district of Bordeaux. It accounts for two-thirds of the Médoc peninsula. The appellation of the same name covers red wines produced within the same zone, but outside of the six communes which have their own AOP: the Haut-Médoc zone is home to the "famous four" left bank appellations Margaux, Pauillac, Saint-Estèphe and Saint-Julien, as well as Listrac and Moulis. While five Châteaux were included in the 1855 Classification from Haut Médoc, it is home to the majority of Cru Bourgeois classed Châteaux. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are the main grape varieties, covering approximately 4650 hectares (11,490 acres). White wines made in Haut-Médoc AOP vineyards are bottled as Bordeaux Blanc.

[HIGHLIGHT]

92 Château La Lagune Château La Lagune has a history that dates back to the 16th century. Today it is owned by the Frey family which is also known as the owners of the legendary Domaine Paul Jaboulet Aîné in the Rhone Valley. In 2021, Cabernet Sauvignon takes a more important place in the blend (70%), with the arrival of several plots replanted 15 years ago being now at their best. The balance of this vintage highlights its pure expression in a fruity version, continuous and with a beautiful length, completed by the sweetness of Merlot (20%) and the density of Petit Verdot (10%).

“The 2021 Château La Lagune is rock-solid, with considerable finesse and elegance.” — Jeb Dunnuck

Château La Conseillante

Château Beauregard

Château Vray Croix de Gay Château Gazin Château Le Bon Pasteur

Pomerol, the smallest of the major fine wine regions in Bordeaux, located on the right bank of the Gironde, has a relatively recent history. Although we can date back the first vineyards to Roman times, the AOC status was granted in 1936 and only in the last century, thanks to the devotion and commitment of winegrowers, the reputation of its wines has constantly increased from year to year. Today, it is certainly one of the most prestigious of the Bordeaux AOC. Traditionally, Pomerol produces only a small quantity of wine, therefore, the race to secure the best vines of the most recent vintage in this region is always more alive than ever.

[HIGHLIGHT]

95 Château La Conseillante Château La Conseillante is located in the heart of the Pomerol plateau and has an excellent terroir, precisely between Pétrus and Vieux Château Certan and in front of Cheval Blanc. La Conseillante is the definition of “Connoisseurs wine“. A fruity, creamy and quite concentrated wine. 2021 is a vintage with texture, fruit character and a delicate tannic mouth-feel, that provides very good ageing capacity. The vintage 2021 marks a special moment for the producer: the 150th anniversary with both - a special celebratory bottle and a special case.

“A Pomerol of vibrancy and tension, the 2021 bristles with energy from start to finish.” — Antonio Galloni

The Saint-Émilion reputation is superb, thanks to the outstanding terroir on the right bank of the Gironde, where vines grow on famous gravelly soils, slopes and a limestone plateau. The origins are truly historic: since as far back as 1289, when King Edward I delimited the Saint-Émilion jurisdiction, only wines produced within this area can boast belonging to the Saint-Émilion appellation. To improve quality and distinguish the finer wines of the area, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru wines are produced under tight production restrictions, and the classification is periodically reviewed to keep it up to date and relevant.

[HIGHLIGHT]

96 Château Figeac The 2021 vintage is the first one of Figeac vinified in the new winery. Despite the peculiar climate conditions, the unique terroir and this top-notch new facility made granted another marvelous wine. Figeac is characterized by one of the most recognizable blends in the industry: 1/3 Cabernet Sauvignon – 1/3 Cabernet Franc– 1/3 Merlot that makes this wine one of the most unique and recognizable in the whole region. In 2021 this structure was slightly modified, with an increase of around 10% in the Cabernet Sauvignon versus the Merlot.

“A classic, balanced, incredibly impressive Figeac.”

Château d’Aiguillhe

Clos Lunelles

Click to find out the whole selection 68

The Libournais territory, located on the right bank of the Dordogne with its thousand-year-old vineyards renowned worldwide, is named after the historic capital of Libourne, where good wines were exported abroad already in the Middle Ages. It is a fiefdom of merlot (60 to 90%) and the production is almost exclusively devoted to red wines, with 14 AOCs. Generally, wines produced here are fruitier, more docile, less austere and more elegant, compared to the ones of the Left Bank. In addition to the prestigious appellations Saint-Émilion and Pomerol, which have a dedicated space, many other sub-regions produce excellent wines, notably the so-called satellites of Saint-Émilion Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux and Canon-Fronsac.

[HIGHLIGHT]

91 Château D'Aiguilhe Château d'A iguilhe 2021 is a unique effort from the von Neipperg family's organically farmed estate, one of the finest vineyards in the Castillon-Côtes de Bordeaux appellation. While wine was being produced already during the 1700s, with the takeover by von Neipperg in 1989 the vineyards and facilities were completely modernized and replanted. Stephan von Neipperg owns other renowned Bordeaux wine estates such as La Mondotte and Canon la Gaffelière in St. Emilion. D'A iguilhe 2021 represents a terrific value with a blend of 90% Merlot, 10 % Cabernet Franc.

“A wine with great elegance, tension and precision. One of the great discoveries in this vintage.” — Markus del MonegoMW

Château Latour-Martillac

Both the Graves and Pessac-Léognan appellations have a history rooted in antiquity: since 1300 the production of wines in these regions has contributed to the prestige of Bordeaux wines. They are located in the area immediately south of the city of Bordeaux, on the left bank of the Garonne River. Great balanced and refined red wines are produced here, but the area is also the source of the only Bordeaux Blancs classified as Grand Cru Classé. Moreover, it includes the only red-wine producer outside the Haut-Médoc classified in the Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855, the premier cru Château Haut-Brion.

[HIGHLIGHT]

97 Château Haut Brion 2021 confirms once again that great terroirs can always express their best qualities supported by an expertized and passionate team. The position of the Haut-Brion vineyard demonstrates its inestimable value as the frost spared most of the plots. It required particular attention, with leave-thinning carried out on the sites of rows the least exposed to the sun and green harvests done in plots of young Merlot. In the own words of the Château, this effort led to “grapes of super quality”, an Haut Brion 2021 of great success.

“The 2021 Haut-Brion is all class, all finesse.”

Château Rieussec

Sauternais is home to the most prestigious French sweet wines, produced in an area that consists of five communes: Barsac , Bommes , Fargues , Preignac and Sauternes, located on the left bank of the Garonne, south of Bordeaux. The reason why these appellations are the cradle of greatest sweet wines is primarily due to their unique microclimate: when the water of the rivers meets, a condensation phenomenon forms and covers the entire vineyard, allowing the development of the noble rot “Botrytis cinerea”, which profoundly transforms the harvest generating the aromas that will give all their flavours to the wines of Sauternais. This appellation contains, among others, the prestigious Château d'Yquem, Premier Cru Supérieur.

[HIGHLIGHT]

97 Château Suduiraut Château Suduiraut classed as a Premier Cru in 1855 and situated in the heart of Sauternes, is made from grapes selected from the finest terroirs of the property. The 2021 vintage is of the finest quality: producing extremely small quantities - minus 80% compared to the previous year - the tiny amount of wine in this vintage was able to reach exceptional quality. It has a lovely fruit, and a fresh acidity like the 2007, very harmonious with great depth, length, and elegance. The blend is 100 % Sémillon.

“The 2021 Suduiraut is breathtaking. Racy and creamy to the core, it retains a gorgeous sense of floral lift and freshness.” — Antonio Galloni
