Choose countryside...

arundel & the The historic and picturesque town of Arundel boasts a magnificent castle and cathedral and is home to a fabulous arts festival.

1

The museum is a good place to start a tour of this compact town, before discovering the Norman/Victorian Castle opposite; the historic family home of the Duke of Norfolk. The castle, the Victorian gothic cathedral, and medieval St Nicholas’ Church create an impressive skyline. It’s also a shoppers’ paradise; independent shops offer gifts, antiques and art, amongst other delights, along the winding streets. Just an hour-and-a-half by train from London, Arundel and the South Downs villages are a haven for foodies with restaurants, cafés, pubs, delicatessen shops, and a Farmers’ Market on the third Saturday of every month. For walkers, Arundel is a great base for strolls along the River Arun, around the town and into the glorious South Downs National Park with miles of beautiful countryside and attractive Sussex villages.

Culture and

history Authors Rudyard Kipling, Hilaire Belloc, Eleanor Farjeon and William Blake were all inspired by the sea and South Downs, and William Ward-Higgs penned the famous song ‘Good old Sussex by the Sea’ - the unofficial county anthem - when staying in Bognor Regis. Blake wrote the words to ‘Jerusalem’ in Felpham, which was later set to stirring music by Hubert Parry who lived in Rustington.

2

Inspiration for creative visitors can be found in historic Arundel with its magnificent castle, intriguing antique 3 shops and contemporary galleries. The Downs, seaside towns, coastal villages, River Arun and local harbours provide inspiration for painters, writers and photographers. Annual arts festivals are held in both Littlehampton and Arundel, with numerous events held across the district every year, offering the chance to buy locally made crafts, from textiles to sculpture. Visit the museums at Arundel, Bognor Regis, Littlehampton, Rustington or nearby Chichester and chat to the locals to appreciate the history of the Downs, towns and villages. Take a walk with a local guide to hear more about the fascinating history of the district.
