Message Jan 2014

Ron Burton President Rotary International We often talk about Rotary as an extended family, with all of its branches and generations. We value our youth program participants and alumni as important members of the Rotary family, and we place a special emphasis on service to children and families. We do this because we know that for any family, the youngest generation is the future. That is a b s o l u t e l y t r u e f o r u s i n R o t a r y. We know that it is essential for us to bring in a new generation of younger Rotary members. We've spent a lot of time talking about how to attract young professionals to Rotary – but perhaps we haven't talked enough a b o u t w h y t h e y d o n ' t s t a y. There are plenty of young people, some of them youth program alumni, who do join Rotary. But when they begin families of their own, many of them leave. It isn't hard to see why: These are young professionals who are already spending more time than they want to away from their families. No matter how much they love and value Rotary, they are not going to prioritize their Rotary service over their s p o u s e s a n d c h i l d r e n . Nor should we ever expect them to. This is why it is so important for us to find ways to welcome families into Rotary, so that Rotary and the family are never in competition for a Rotarian's time. Whether it's by planning service projects that involve the whole family, or providing child care during meetings, or being flexible about meeting places and times, we need to make Rotary service a viable option for those with young children. When you welcome families into Rotary, you're saying: Your family is not an obstacle to your Rotary service. They're not something that has to be scheduled around.

going out to Rotary and leaving everyone else at home, Rotary goes on the family calendar. The family of Rotary is real. Those children are going to grow up seeing their parents involved in community service, and being involved in service themselves. Not only is that a great thing for the family – it's a great thing for the Rotary club, which will be helping to nurture a new generation of active, servicem i n d e d y o u n g m e m b e r s . At every stage of our lives and our careers, Rotary has something for all of us – a way to let us do more, give more, and be more. Rotary is big enough for us all.

Rylarian Atharv Speaks‌ Every year Rotary Club of Bicholim organizes Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) programme for Eighth and the Ninth Standard students of various schools in and around Bicholim. This year it was organized at the Keshav Seva Sadhana School premises on 30th Nov and 1st Dec 2013. As a student of Shri Shantdurga High School this was my second opportunity to attend the camp. It was very unique and exciting experience for me and my friends. It was the Saturday evening as I along with my friends entered the camp venue, Durgakaki and Smitakaki welcomed us with warm smile and completed the registration formalities. The RYLA got started with a session by Mr Pravin Sabnis on the art of working together and team building. I was thrilled to learn the techniques of building in a leader and following a leader and I am convinced that the inputs that I received today would definitely help me in my future life. Remembering what I studied was always a problem for me. I never knew that today I would get an opportunity to learn the intricacies on Memory Techniques from a learned speaker like Professor Pravin Sawant. I think I came home richer and stronger to face the challenges in my academic career. Over the past years I looked upon History as just a subject to study and pass at the examination. Young Omkar Thakur rather awakened me and showed me new horizons. The pictorial saga of Great Freedom Fighter Veer Vinayak Damodar Sawarkar depicting his endurance, dedication, determination and devotion; rendered by him was an eye opener for me and my friends. I am feeling from within the importance of the freedom than we enjoy and feel responsible to contribute my might to keep upright the National Pride. Tired by the brain storming sessions the mouth watering delicious dinner brought in new enthusiasm in all the participant. To add more to it was enjoyable Camp Fire conducted by my dear father Rtn Sudath. It was an opportunity for us to exhibit out talents and

create happy moments. Every one enjoyed stretching limits. The ancient art of YOGA has received a recognition in this world by every one who wants to lead a healthy life. The organizers of RYLA were very keen to imbibe this message in us through a Athatv Mandrekar YOGA session in twilight on the second day. Sandesh sir guided us during this session. Now the time was for relaxing, Premanand Sir from Keshav Seva Sadhana School taught us many games. While doing so we felt rejuvenated to enter the class room fresh. Arunkaka took us the new world of stars and celestial bodies. We were surprised to know the facts and figures about the universe. I never thought that Moon was so important us. The marathon session by Sanjiv Sir was an eye opener for me. I felt ashamed that being a Goan and staying in Goa, I was not aware of the History and Geography of my home state. Coming out of this session I felt elevated knowing that I am staying a state that has a great culture and history. A sumptuous lunch was waiting for us after the marathon. This was followed by a brief session by Aniruddha sir on leadership qualities. Every nice thing come to an end. The concluding session was presided over by Ace swimmer Miss Saachi Gramopadhye as the chief guest. I was surprised knowing the quantum of achievements this standard eighth class student had accumulated in a short span of time. We all were thrilled to receive certificates of participation and gifts at her hands in this session. I take this opportunity to express sincere gratitude on behalf of all participant for the excellent programme, hospitality , care, concern and love from the Rotary Family of Bicholim. Hope to visit again to gain more knowledge .

Family Ties An 65 year old man was sitting on the sofa in his house along with his 38 years old highly educated son. Suddenly a crow perched on their window. The Father asked his Son, "What is this?" The Son replied "It is a crow". After a few minutes, the Father asked his Son the 2nd time, "What is this?" The Son said "Father, I have just now told you "It's a crow". After a little while, the old Father again asked his Son the 3rd time, what is this?" At this time some expression of irritation was felt in the Son's tone when he said to his Father with a rebuff. "It's a crow, a crow". A little after, the Father again asked his Son t he 4th time, "What is this?" This time the Son shouted at his Father, "Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again, although I have told you so many times 'IT IS A CROW'. Are you not able to understand this?" A little later the Father went to his room and came back with an old tattered diary, which he had maintained since his Son was born. On opening a page, he asked his Son to read that page. When the son read it, the following words were written in the diary:"Today my little son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa, when a crow was sitting on the window. My Son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied to him all 23 times that it was a Crow. I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question again and again for 23 times. I did not at all feel irritated I rather felt affection for my innocent child". While the little child asked him 23 times "What is this", the Father had felt no irritation in replying to the same question all 23 times and when today the Father asked his Son the same question just 4 times, the Son felt irritated and annoyed. So, if your parents attain old age, do not repulse them or look at them as a burden, but speak to them a gracious word, be cool, obedient, humble and kind to them.

Be considerate to your parents. From today say this aloud, "I want to see my parents happy forever. They have cared for me ever since I was a little child. They have always showered their selfless love on me. They crossed all mountains and valleys without seeing the storm and heat to make me a person presentable in the society today". Say a prayer to God, "I will serve my old parents in the BEST way. I will say all good and kind words to my dear parents, no matter how they behave.
