Welcome to Mission Federal ArtWalk 2014 Art, music, dance — all in one place...all in one weekend... and all for you! This is Mission Federal ArtWalk, and I invite you, your family and friends to join us. We congratulate everyone involved in the festival’s 30th year, and anticipate that this will be the best celebration yet. Mission Federal Credit Union is honored to be the title sponsor for the sixth year. As the largest, locally based financial institution exclusively serving San Diego County, we are delighted to support this free community event that brings more than 300 visual and performing artists out of buildings and into the neighborhood of Little Italy so that everyone can enjoy them. Whether you’ve never been to Mission Federal ArtWalk before or attend every year, you’ll see that it reflects how friendly, accessible and creative San Diego is, and why we’re so proud to call this our home. On behalf of Mission Fed’s volunteer Board of Directors, our employees and our customers, I thank you for coming and encourage you to enjoy all that Mission Federal ArtWalk has to offer. Sincerely,

Debra Schwartz President and CEO, Mission Federal Credit Union

30 YEAR ANNIVERSAY Mission Federal ArtWalk, in our 30th proud year, offers art for the seasoned collector as well as the first-time art buyer. Featuring artists from all over the US and Mexico, you’ll find the variety and quality to be outstanding. Plan to spend the weekend strolling all 17 blocks, and meeting the artists along your journey. Here are a few tips to ensure you see and absorb as much as possible during your visit: PARKING In addition to the surface lots and street parking surrounding Little Italy, (see centerfold for map) Old Town Trolley will be offering a shuttle service from Broadway at Pacific Highway, so you can park in the ABM lots there and take the short ride to the festival. TAKE THE MTS TROLLEY The Green Line brings you straight to the heart of Little Italy. We recommend this convenient public mode of transportation, for a hassle-free visit. MISSIONFEDERALARTWALK.ORG Check out the festival website for a searchable database of artwork, performance schedules, “artivities” and more.

1992:

1984: Installation Gallery, a local not for profit organization with the mission of providing artists a place to showcase their work, launched the first ArtWalk. Art was displayed in various studios, warehouses and office buildings throughout downtown, from the Gaslamp, to East Village and up to Little Italy.

Following the 9th ArtWalk, the original founders felt the event had outgrown what they were able to manage with volunteers. Coop and Patti Cooprider acquired the rights from Installation Gallery, taking the event to a new level as a synergistic outreach program for the San Diego Art Institute. The increasingly substantial art event began attracting both artists and attendees from other parts of the country and Mexico.

INTERACTIVE ARTIVITES Paint your own mandala and take it home. On Saturday from 12-4pm, watch internationally-acclaimed street artists create magic with a spray can. “Off the Wall” brings an exciting, edgy element to ArtWalk. BRING THE FAMILY KidsWalk returns with an array of interactive art projects for the whole family. 15 art experiences are offered for both the young and young at heart. PERFORMANCES Dance on the EDGE returns for year three, with dance troops onstage all weekend long. Four music venues offer eclectic music by San Diego’s top musicians. And at Amici Park on Sunday, enjoy the youth dance performers. Artists displaying this sign will donate a portion of their festival proceeds to ArtReach, the not-for-profit program bringing art education into San Diego County schools. artreachsandiego.org

1996: Greg Seremetis, principal of Interface

Marketing Group, resurrected ArtWalk after a twoyear hiatus. With support from Sony, Union Bank and American Airlines, ArtWalk thrived throughout downtown San Diego. As attendance grew by tens of thousands, Greg had the vision of buildiing upon the charm of LIttle Italy by centralizing the activities within this dynamic neighborhood. >> continued on page 4

n 2013, ArtWalk NTC @ Liberty Station was introduced. The festival, formerly called ArtWalk on the Bay, sought a permanent home and NTC’s burgeoning arts & culture district was the perfect fit. Home to multiple artist studios and performance venues, NTC has become San Diego’s flagship locale for the arts. Attendees enjoy free parking and the “easyto-navigate” festival layout surrounding a stunning rose garden. The NTC Foundation has been a terrific partner and supporter in this effort and we are pleased to announce the 2014 dates: the weekend of August 16 & 17. Learn more: artwalksandiego.org/ntc

Mandala Art with Deb DeLisi What is it about a mandala that endures the test of time? Originating in Hindu and Buddhist religions, mandalas are spiritual vehicles that arose thousands of years ago to teach sacred texts and pass on knowledge about the order of our world. Mandalas have attributes of harmony, abundance, good fortune, joy, resolution and the oneness of nature. These works of paint and sand were living prayers that held important meaning for the people making them.

Deb DeLisi

About the Artist: Deb DeLisi After a fork in the road of life, a special experience led Deb DeLisi to mandalas. People from all over the world resonate with her art. Deb also works with businesses synergistically to create custom energy logos that support their businesses.

Judy Berman Silbert, ArtReach Executive Director

Why is arts education so important for children? I look to the SD County Office of Education Visual and

Performing Arts initiative called “Arts Empower” for this answer. “Comprehensive arts education empowers each student to create, think critically, collaborate and communicate, enabling each to become an informed, global citizen.” Consistent participation in the arts helps youngsters practice innovation and gain confidence in the process. Students may begin ArtReach workshops with “I can’t do this,” but they finish with “look what I did.”

What is ArtReach’s main goal? Our goal is to help increase access to standards-based, sequential visual arts education in K-6 schools across San Diego County. Our free workshop program focuses on taking art workshops to Title I schools that have no existing art resources. We teach students skills that help them think big, create with confidence and find joy in making original work. Who is ArtReach? Our board and administrative team are advocates for a vibrant

arts culture in San Diego. Our Teaching Artists include a plein aire painter, an expressive arts therapist, a textile artist, a photographer, a graphic designer and more. Meet our team and donors by visiting artreachsandiego.org. How does one get involved with ArtReach? To inquire about bringing ArtReach to a school or organization, email judy@artreachsandiego.org, or call our office at 619.615.1090.
