Pair of Reliefs of Cherubs

Glazed terracotta, the finely modelled heads of the four-winged infants glazed in white, with the pupils of the eyes in manganese, set against a blue ground; both with bands of egg-and-dart and ropetwist decoration on the alternating vertical borders. The reliefs once formed part of a frame, one cherub (looking forward) originally on the left side, the other (looking down to his right) from the righthand side of the frame. Maiolica, painted in colours, mainly in tones of yellow, blue, green and ochre, the reverse painted in ochre. On the reverse a drawing of a man blowing a long horn and holding a greyhound by a lead, another greyhound behind; an old label with a partially erased inscription in brown ink: the Rape of Helena/Caffaguolo manufactory/ near Florence/circa…/The red spotted leopard…Medici (?)…Berney; a later handwritten label inscribed: Caffaggiolo Maiolica 15th Century/ Caffagiolo is on around between Florence and Bologna/The factory was founded under the auspice of the Medici family. Sicilian, Trapani Attributed to the Workshop of Andrea Tipa (1725– 1783) mid-eighteenth century, the composition after an engraving by Laurent de la Hyre (dated 1639) Holy Family with Angels

Alabaster, in two sections; the group, carved in the round, shows the Madonna at the centre restraining the playful young Christ with her hand, his foot resting on the Serpent; at her side St. Joseph, whilst on the other side a cherub supports the Cross, assisted by another, in turn aided by three suspended cherubs; the base, at the centre of which is a small vignette of the Expulsion from Paradise enclosed by acanthus and scallopped cresting, is supported by a further two cherubs, inhabiting rich acanthus foliage.
