This afternoon as I stood in the Arts Center discussing the Lawrence premiere of earthwork with the film’s creators, a troupe of middle school zombies paused in their parade to observe a performance of young ballerinas en pointe. Photographic works by Bill Snead and John Gary Brown lined the wall, Ardys Ramberg had just completed her three-dimensional work “Wild,” CASA’s casitas covered three long tables. One gallery held an installation by our ceramics artist-in-residence, a second the work of 10 regional artists; our front gallery awaited transformation by a textile artist. In the theater, a young tech crew was building sets for HAMLET AND ZOMBIES. Fifty-five high school Summer Youth Theater actors returned from an afternoon at the Spencer Museum of Art studying social protest photographs and posters in preparation for HAIR. Every day, the Arts Center is our intersection of art, scholarship, social mission, and education.

We are committed to constant, dynamic interaction in a highly collaborative environment within the Lawrence Arts Center and across the community. Celebrating our 35th anniversary, we offer organizational stability combined with diversity and the intentional, chaotic interplay that generates creativity and innovation. In these pages, you will see a glimpse of what more than 100 visual artists, teachers, dancers, actors, and musicians will offer this fall. Visual and performance arts play a catalytic role in our lives, spurring creativity and innovation in ourselves and our children. Please join us as an artist, a seeker, a student, a performer, a leap-taker, an audience member, an adult, or a child.
