About ArtSHINE
What is the OPIC™ Planning System?
OPIC™ refines goal setting and action planning for artists, designers, crafters and creative professionals. Using OPIC™, you’ll establish detailed goals that are realistic, achievable, exciting and inspirational. Drawing on our experience as business lifestyle coaches working with creative clients, we wanted to create an easy-to-use system for the ArtSHINE community.
ArtSHINE is a specialist coaching program for artists, artisans, crafters, designers, fashion labels, and all professionals working in the creative communities. Working extensively with clients, and also drawing upon the knowledge of experienced industry professionals, Vinh Van Lam & Stuart Horrex have worked to create and develop the ArtSHINE program as part of their commitment to support the development of business and entrepreneurial skills of artists, artisans, and all creative professionals. ArtSHINE is here to provide you with all the skills, experience, and support you need to make your artistic dreams a reality. Do what you love to do... Honour your creative spirit... And let it “Shine.” ArtSHINE is all about defining, creating, and pursuing your authentic life path. For more information: www.artshine.com.au
OPIC™ motivates, empowers and helps in any creative practice. It defines your strengths and weaknesses; helps you succeed in key business aspects; refreshes your desire, passion and purpose; gets you organized; and helps you achieve and even surpass your life goals.
The principles of OPIC™ Objective: Achieve those goals. Write them in the present tense as if you have achieved them. Planning: Describe your goals in sequential order, breaking them down into small steps. Implementation: Plan, outline and delegate tasks to complete each step. Detail who will take action, when, and if the action was completed. Commitment: This is critical to completing goals. Focus on why you’ve set out to achieve them and how you’ll overcome challenges, and record the key ‘wins’ in achieving those goals.
OPIC™ how-to guide
Creative people are different. We don’t work the 9–5 grind and rarely have daily tasks to complete. Our challenge is how to use our time effectively. So we’ve designed the OPIC™ planner, a how-to guide that helps you make the transition between you and your art and design business. Get the full version - a printed guide for reference as you read this. You can download the full version on the artshine website: www.artshine.com.au OPIC™ Yearly Planner 2015 Define your “main life areas” and use the yearly planner to map out what you want to achieve. Set several reminders in the year and actively review the goals you achieve. Create new ones and move on from those that are no longer useful. OPIC™ 90-Day Planner A customized guide that helps you focus on your business goals in three key areas: WORK IN your art and design practice: the day-to-day work in the business. Making the product and delivering the service. WORK ON your art and design practice: think of this as the daily management role – planning, business logistics, paying the bills, sales projections, and
running promotional and marketing campaigns. WORK ABOVE your art and design practice: Get an overview, look at the broader picture. Ask questions. What’s the vision, the long-term strategy? Where are you now, and where do you hope to go? Is your work effective and in line with your desire, passion and purpose? Monthly OPIC™ Planner Having set your yearly goals, assign them on a monthly planner. Now you’re ready to move into the planning process. Our planner is a great way to keep you on track, inspired and motivated. Weekly OPIC™ Planner This enables you to check on the goals for the week. Plan out, pencil in and achieve all the tasks you aim to complete, while adapting it daily as changes arise.
Daily OPIC™ Planner This keeps you focused on the three “Must Do’s” of the day. Allocate these tasks from your weekly planner. This gets you into a positive working habit and helps you accomplish your goals quicker, giving you a greater sense of purpose. OPIC™ Achievement Planner Celebrate your successes. Set reminders to update your record of achievements. This is a fantastic way to toast your accomplishments as you hit them along the way. OPIC™ Yearly Planner 2016 Now that you’re motivated, embrace OPIC™ – a system that empowers, challenges, inspires and organises you, and helps you achieve your goals. Now map out your future year.

Shine on, every day! As business owners, we all fall into the trap at some point of becoming very negative about ourselves: whether it be our creativity, the lack of money rolling in or our worthiness. We understand how you can be down, doubting yourself and feeling alone with no help at hand. Well, you’re not alone: other creative artists have gone through the same experiences.
We can help you find opportunities to boost your income by teaching you two vital keys to creating true, lasting success: the mindset AND the system.
However, one thing that we all fail to acknowledge is that we had the strength, vision and boldness to start the business of our dreams. So keep in mind that what you experience is completely natural.
Having BOTH of these is the key to success and what we have will help you become the success story.
If you are encountering these feelings, then why not turn to a business coach to give you support and guidance. At ArtSHINE, we are committed to making your passion flourish. We help you create systems that match your Business LifeStyle so you can awake every morning with purpose and passion.
We work alongside you helping you to create and think, and to show you how to run an Art and Design business that resonates with you, and makes you stand apart from your competitors. Take that step now and call us to help you create the business lifestyle of your dreams?
Want to learn more? It’s as simple as 1... 2... 3... 1. Have a personal chat with Vinh from ArtSHINE 2. Tell us little bit more about yourself and we’ll offer you our insights in a short one on one coaching conversation. 3. Just starting out? Visit: artshine.com.au/newbusiness-survey Been working in your business for two years or more? Visit: artshine.com.au/existingbusiness-survey We’re here to help you to take action just like we’ve helped thousands of other artists, designers and creative professionals all around the globe. Now is the time to let your art SHINE. Now is the time to Make Tomorrow Today! n

Get fit and stay motivated during Winter Does your fitness training regime move into hibernation during the winter months? Do you use any excuse that you can think of to not get out of that warm and cosy bed and head to the gym? Use some of these tips to make sure that the hard work of the previous several months does not evaporate before your eyes. 1. Re-set your training goals. Often one of the goals of the clients that I work with is to look better for the beach or just during the warmer months where we tend to have a bit of flesh out to show. Obviously, this goal is not going to be appropriate during the winter months, when we usually cover every square centimetre of our body and a dip at the beach sounds more like torture than pleasure! Your goal at this time of the year might switch to more of an athletic achievement, such as beating a personal best time on the treadmill or during your run
or lifting a personal best. The goal that you might chose is completely up to you, but SMART goals are very motivating and certainly will help to keep your motivation during winter. 2. Keep the same routine. If you are normally a morning trainer, don’t attempt to start heading in to the gym after work because the evidence indicates that you probably won’t go to the gym at all! As hard as it can be to jump out of bed on a cold and dark winter morning, once you are up and on your way to the gym you will be glad that you have made the effort. As I always tell my clients, the hardest part of training is walking through the gym door! 3. Try something new. There is no better time to look at doing something that you have been putting off, if for no other reason
Chris Dounis - M: 0432 179 939 Your personal trainer than the fact that it will keep you engaged through the difficult winter months. It is very easy to become bored and demotivated during the cold months, so anything that can keep you engaged can only be a good thing. This might mean trying that new class that you kept putting off. Or going for that bay run that you never had time to do. It might even mean getting a Personal Trainer to help you come up with some ideas to help keep you focussed. Yours in health. Chris Dounis.

FEATURED ARTIST
Georgina Smith
Tell us a little about yourself and what you do. Creative fine Art Photographer based on Sydney Northern Beaches 1. In 5 words, who are you? Nature’s Earth mother 2. Where do you get your inspiration from when you create? Predominately women inspire me. By referencing them in my work I hope to capture their strength, power, acceptance, resilience, and authority and thus making for a commanding and captivating image. 3. What are one or two favourite recent projects? Gallery’s “Calendar Challenge” to artists ARTISTS are being urged to think ahead to the New Year after a Sydney gallery threw down the gauntlet to them to help create a calendar for 2016. The first ever “Draw me a Calendar” competition is being organized by the ArtSHINE Gallery in the Chippendale Creative Precinct The gallery is appealing to artists and designers to submit works with an opportunity to be among the 12 selected to represent the months of 2016. Gallery founder Vinh Van Lam said: “We encourage participants
to be creative and come up with artworks that are striking and suitable for a calendar. We want to achieve a consistent look so that all artworks complement each other.” Artists need to pay an entry fee of $50 that will include 1 Canson art paper and a black ink pen submission. They can enter up to two artworks for $90 for 3 Canson art papers and two ink pen applications.
Entries need to be on a 20cm x 20cm Canson 350gsm art paper. For more information about the competition, please visit our website or send an email to gallery@artshine.com.au The winning artists will receive $700.00 art licensing and residual income coaching. The artworks will be selected by judges, with one artwork being chosen for the front cover of the ArtSHINE 2016 calendar. Selected winners will be unveiled at a gallery opening night on Saturday October 7. A People’s Choice Award will be announced on Sunday October 25 at ArtSHINE’s Spring/Summer market. Get that winning habit Why fuel your mind with knowledge. Then you don’t externalise it. No one will recognise it. Success is all about being noticed, but rather than being brash and arrogant, adopt these discreet habits to illustrate your winning way to the world. Discreet, but complete To gain respect, you first have to earn it. And one of the things you can do to lose it rapidly is to brag openly about what you have achieved. So be discreet and just drop into conversation, almost matter-of-fact, that you’re indeed incredibly successful. Slip things in, almost under the radar, and people will look up to you as a ‘dark horse’ who does things quietly, but with a winning mentality. Don’t go into detail and cut the excess, tell it like it is. Be a good communicator Effective communication has never been so important so you need to have the right words to communicate and remove any room for misinterpretation for people who are hungry to point out your flaws. The trick? Choose your words carefully. Be specific and pay attention to context. Relating the bare essentials helps and if you don’t have anything nice to say about people, don’t. Listen to others. Exit gracefully Sometimes, you just need to cut conversation short. The successful person knows how to steer the conversation with class and can end one just as gracefully. Don’t make excuses for your departure, as they’ll sound dishonest. Thank the other party for their time and bid them farewell. That’s it. Take command of situations with style. Teach yourself the finer things in life A successful person is a
connoisseur. Your knowledge of the finer things shows class and culture. It shows you can be a peer among business leaders. So get some books and familiarize yourself with food, wine, art, and literature. You can’t go wrong as they comprise the standard set of fine-living goods. Good manners count for nothing Good grace goes a long way. Use old school manners, such as treating women like ladies and shaking the hands of strangers that you meet. People will notice the little things. Some basic manners include opening doors for women; let others pass first; say “please” and “thank you”; look people in the eye when you address them and have proper table etiquette. Make public speeches Very few great men have gotten away with being recluses. So practice speaking in front of friends. When you can comfortably address a crowd, you gain a new audience to showcase your knowledge to. A good speaker is always admired for his confidence and ease. Keep contacts close The more people you know, the more opportunity will present itself. But also think of a network in terms of image: knowing lots of people shows you are likable and in high demand. To maintain a pool of contacts,
however, takes work. Return phone calls and emails promptly. Work towards being seen as trustworthy and reliable. Talking to people everyday works wonders. Beyond that, your knack for small talk with anyone will demonstrate openness and a willingness to accept new ideas. It also shows you treat everyone with respect. Do favors even if you don’t expect to get them repaid. Most people know how to be grateful, and your kindness will come back one day. Travel Broaden your horizons. When you travel, it shows you’re curious about the world and other cultures. A well-traveled person also has interesting stories to tell. He charms people with tales of foreign lands, of sights, sounds and flavors. Have a positive attitude You want to be a well of inspiration, show you’re confident and in control of your destiny. So quit being a worrier. And smile, being a source of pleasure and making the most of the present helps. Read more on www.artshine.com.au

Meditate away every day
Meditating in today’s fast-paced life is nigh on impossible. What with so many things on our minds, work stresses, personal issues, chasing bills and payments, and running a family, the ability for peace and quiet can be lost in the cacophony of head traffic.
When taking a slow walk, ask yourself: “Where am I going?” “What am I doing with my life?” and “What are the things that make me happy?” Begin a conversation with yourself as you walk and try to answer your questions.
Added to the rise of technology, with gadgets, mobiles and the like, wouldn’t it be lovely to appreciate the silence and meditate for a few minutes.
Take the time to pause, look around and realize the many beautiful things you have been ignoring. The more aware you are, the more you’ll be able to focus on what matters.
There are many meditation techniques, but they take the time to master. If you want a meditation habit, try these three ways to get you started: Take a slow walk alone When it comes to meditation, most think you need to sit and find a tranquil place. I learnt a different way: “The walking meditation” technique. It is very effective.
Make gratitude a habit One way to meditate on a busy schedule is saying thank you for just waking up in the morning, to the food on your table and to the people you love. No matter how bad you think things are, there is always something you can appreciate and be thankful for the life you have.
Taste your food My mum taught me an important lesson. She said we can forget what we learn or the people we met, but we should always remember the taste of food. When your children ask you to play with them, do so. If your parents ask you to spend time with them, do so. When they are gone, they are not replaceable. Every opportunity in this life has an expiration date. Change is inevitable, and if you are too busy to enjoy time with the people you love now, you may regret it when the day comes you can no longer be with them. So savor every moment of your life just like the taste of food.
“First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, and then you win.” Mahatma Gandhi

Tale Three: Tales my mother told me my mother told me” “Understand “Tales This is the first of a collection of stories my mother told me when I was a child. and be Each has meaning, wisdom or woman, too. yourself” insight. I hope they inspire you Each tale is recalled in every and that you can find ways to apply them to your life and business, as I do now. My mother is an inspiring woman, the best mother and a great business

I was quite young at the time, but loved to emulate how she spoke to people, and recite the same kind of questions she used to ask the workers.
in life and in business, we need to invest the time to learn and understand ourselves. WHO we are and to know WHAT we want!
One day, I asked her: “Where did you learn to ask these questions and how do you know what to ask? Because when I’m a big boy, I want to ask people and engage in conversation the way you do. Can you teach me mum?”
This tale took place at our factory in Vietnam. I remember how my mum was an extremely good communicator. She inspired people when she connected with them. Even with new factory workers, mum would make them feel at home, give them her full attention and engage in conversation with them. She learnt a great deal about them and understood what they wanted to do with their careers and life. Many of the younger workers were unsure what they wanted to do, but after a chat with mum, I’d notice they ‘d look at their futures differently. They became motivated and developed a sense of purpose.
My mother, smiling, said: “What is your hurry? You have plenty of time to learn.” Even when my mum did explain it to me, I was too young to understand the meaning behind the importance of self understanding. However, it went something like this: “Knowing who you are, and what you want in life, is the highest contribution you can make to yourself.” When I think back, I understood the real reason as to why mum asked those questions. They were used to encourage them to think what they wanted in life and what they had yet to discover in themselves. So what do we learn from this tale? To be good at what we do
If you understand yourself, then you can understand others and therefore you have compassion. If you care for yourself and the people around you, then they are more likely to support you and grow your business with you. In business, knowing who you are, and understanding the importance of the goals that you have set for yourself and by having an actionable business plan with a clear vision and mission will help you understand what your business is all about. So when you share this with your team and they understand your vision, they too will feel empowered to achieve. This is why self understanding is so important. Artwork by artist Anthony Van Lam
