Selected entries from Moore ArtShare – COVID Edition (l to r): Heavyhearted; COVID-19 by Libby Cornett of Whispering Pines, COVID’s Wrath by Cady Timms (age 11-17) of Pinehurst, Onion Flower by Neva Kittrell-Scheve of Pinehurst, Unknown by Kathy Leuck of Pinehurst.

Welcome to the third edition of the Arts Council Program Guide What a different world we live in now. For the past seven months, most events have been cancelled and we have to cover our faces when out in public, wash our hands more often, and we cannot gather closer than six feet. For the Arts Council, COVID-19 has really altered the way we present the arts. For example, the four pieces above were shared with us in a new “e-zine” we call Moore ArtShare – COVID Edition. For this joint project between the Arts Council and Given Memorial Library, we simply asked everyone to share how they were creatively coping during the quarantine. We were amazed at the response. We received paintings, poems, photographs, drawings, music, a virtual children’s choir, greeting cards, a play, and clever face masks. While many traditional ways of consuming art have been put on hold, art always finds a way into our lives. Whether you are an artist or not, check out Moore ArtShare at MooreArt.org/MooreArtShare. If you are as impressed as we are, please become an Arts Council member by using the form below, or join securely at MooreArt.org or calling us at 910-692-ARTS (2787). Last year, membership gifts helped fund art programs for 15,000+ children in our schools, exhibits featuring 400+ regional artists, concerts by world-class musicians, grants to local arts groups, and scholarships to talented children. We hope you enjoy our Program Guide and please thank and support our advertisers – this guide would not be possible without them.

Introducing

ArtistYear NC Offered in partnership between the Arts Council, ArtistYear/AmeriCorp & Moore County Schools Four million youth in our nation are without arts education. In the Moore County region, this disparity particularly hits low-income and minority children. ArtistYear's mission is to address this Arts Education Gap by ensuring that every underserved student has arts education through a National Service Arts Corps. ArtistYear does this by placing recent higher-education arts graduates at high-needs Title I schools as full-time teaching artists. Creative artistic disciplines include actors, creative writers, musicians, and visual artists. ArtistYear NC launched in July, 2020 as our state's first volunteer program for artists and the first program of its kind to serve our rural communities. This school year, seven Fellows will collectively teach 2,500 K-12 students as a shared-delivery partner. Each Fellow is paired with a teacher to provide 1,700 hours of arts education. This innovative strategy significantly bolsters arts education for our most vulnerable youth, while improving student academic and socio-emotional development, enhancing school climate and capacity, benefiting the larger community, and developing a new generation of Citizen-Artists steeped in service. ArtistYear, the first national service program for artists, was founded as a nonprofit in 2016. To date, the organization has trained and placed 136 Fellows in 126 low-income schools, collectively engaging 35,021 (non-duplicated) vulnerable students, delivering over 231,400 hours of arts instruction across New York City, Philadelphia, rural Colorado, and Moore County. Kate Curtin, Arts Council Youth Program Director, will lead ArtistYear NC. Arts Council Youth Programs are supported by grants from the Claude F. Smith Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, NC Arts Council, Moore County Charitable Fund, Moore County Community Foundation, Southern Pines Garden Club, and the generous gifts of Arts Council members. ArtistYear NC is supported in part by a grant from the Palmer Foundation. Learn more at MooreArt.org/ArtistYear.

ON THE COVER: 2020/2021 ArtistYear NC Fellows (l to r): Alexis Lawson (writing), Katie Rose Hand (music), Spencer George (writing), Patrice Haynes (music & theatre), Nia Johnson (art), Wylie Thornquist (art), & Katie Mielens (art).

Arts Council Staff Spotlight | We are as good as our people

KATE CURTIN Youth Program Director Since 2016, Kate has made a huge impact with our educational programs as the Arts Council’s Youth Program director, reaching over 15,000 students each year. She organizes our annual Young People’s Fine Arts Festival that showcases K-12 art from across Moore County and she serves as the new ArtistYear NC Regional Lead, providing mentorship, professional development and daily supervision of the ArtistYear Fellows. She also created the RePaint Art Supply Drive that distributes donated art supplies to our public schools. Kate is a graduate of Hofstra University, U.S. Army veteran, and Moore County Historical Association board member. To learn more about Kate, we asked her several questions about herself... Where were you Born? Syracuse, NY Where have you lived? New Jersey, Connecticut, New York, Georgia, Washington, Kansas, North Carolina, Germany, Korea, and France At what age did you become an adult? When I boarded the flight to Korea, my first Army duty assignment. If you could learn to do anything, what would it be? Glass-Blowing What was the last experience that made you a stronger person? Raising my son If you could meet anyone, living or dead, who would you meet? Grace Banker would be an interesting person to meet. She was the Chief Operator of the U.S. Signal Corps' women telephone operators serving overseas during WWI. She was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal in 1919. What is your favorite or most inspirational place in Moore County? Weymouth Woods What is your favorite thing about working at the Arts Council of Moore County? There are three. First, the people I have the privilege of working with. Second, I love the youth programs and what it offers our community's students. Third, I am always surrounded by art, which is always a great thing. What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given? My best piece of advice actually comes from a quote by Shirley Chisholm: "If they don't give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair." Thank you, Kate, for making the Arts Council a great community asset!

Engaging the mind, body and spirit of every child, every day...

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

MARY WRIGHT Born in Lenoir, NC, Mary Wright lives in Southern Pines, NC and creates whimsical art in acrylic and fabric. She will exhibit her art at Campbell House Galleries from November 6 to December 19, 2020, along with artists, Beth Garrison, Paula Montgomery, and Fay Terry. When & how were you introduced to art? When I was 12 years old, my brave mother let me borrow her sewing machine. I cut up all my old jeans and made them into purses and backpacks to carry my stuff to school. Later I realized that this was actually art!

“The Colors of Southern Pines”

Learn more about Mary: www.MaryWrightOriginals.studio Instagram: @MaryWrightOriginals

Who or what are your artistic influences? My first influence was my artistic grandmother who painted large still lifes of bright colorful flowers with colorful backgrounds. Later in my more educated years, it would be Henri Matisse for his happy colors, distorted shapes, and ability to change mediums and keep his style apparent. What is the most memorable response to your art? Recently, I was told “the beauty of your work makes an uplifting difference for our home.” What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given? What stays with me the most is from my grandmother who said, “Teach them to laugh!” What is your favorite place in Moore County? The amazing changes of season here in Southern Pines with the display of colorful azaleas, longleaf pines, and the giant Magnolia blossoms that I just want to run home and paint!
