Cast from our most recent youth theatre production of “Robin Hood.”

Welcome to the second edition of the Arts Council Program Guide Founded in 1973, the Arts Council of Moore County is a nonprofit, charitable organization whose mission is to “Inspire and Strengthen Our Community Through the Arts.” Our offerings are reflective of the area’s rich diversity, facilitating equitable, affordable access to the arts for all people. We created this guide to share our upcoming exhibits, opportunities for children, high caliber of artists in our concerts, and our other arts events throughout the year. As you turn the pages, you will quickly see why the Arts Council is the center of a thriving creative district, with arts and cultural industries generating $13.2 million* in local economic activity annually. We couldn’t run these programs without public support and perhaps the best way you can help is by making a membership gift today. Last year, membership gifts helped fund: arts programs for 15,000+ children in every school; exhibits featuring 400+ regional artists; community performances by world-class artists; and grants to local groups and scholarships to talented children. This is YOUR arts council and your gift will make a world of difference. Please join using the form below. For a complete list of programs and membership benefits, visit us online at where you can join securely or call us at 910-692-ARTS (2787). Thank you for your consideration and for all you bring to our community. Also, please thank and support our advertisers - this guide would not be possible without them. * 2015 Arts & Economic Prosperity 5, A Project of Americans for the Arts.

A gift to the Arts Council of Moore County is the ultimate expression of faith in our goal of sustaining our community as a lively, beautiful and resilient place with the arts at its core.

Arts Council Youth Programs Each year, the Arts Council uses the arts to make a positive impact on over 15,000 children and expand their dreams for their future. Below are some of our programs that reach every Moore County school, including public, private, charter, and home school: Performing Arts in Moore Schools (PAMS): This partnership with Moore County Schools reaches over 13,000 kids annually. PAMS’ goal is to give every student at least one positive experience each year with a professional, performing artist. Artists are carefully selected for their commitment to education, ties to the curriculum and quality of performance. Young People’s Fine Arts Festival: Each March, the Arts Council showcases art by students in grades K-12. The exhibit features over 300 pieces of art and attracts over 1,000 gallery visitors. This county-wide art show involves all public, private, charter, and home schools. Missoula Children’s Theatre (MCT): MCT is the nation’s largest touring children’s theatre, with shows adapted from classic stories and fairytales. Participation is offered, at no cost, to any child in grades K-8. The shows include a cast of 50-60 children, who are actively engaged from the auditions to the final curtain. Barnes-Travis Arts Scholarship: Established in 2000 in memory of Harry Barnes & Vaud Ancil Travis, III, the goal of this scholarship is to provide support to Moore County middle and high school students with a talent and interest in the arts. The funds may be used for fees for a music or art camp, studying dance at a local dance company, or taking private lessons with an art or music teacher. RePaint Art Supply Drive & RePlay Murphy Instrument Drive: As a supplement to public art teachers’ small budgets, the Arts Council collects art supplies to distribute to Moore County Schools. The Arts Council and Kiwanis Club of the Sandhills collect band and orchestra instruments and distributes them to public school music programs. Donations are accepted year-round. Summer Arts Camps: This Arts Council offers summer arts opportunities that allow children to explore the fun and benefits of the arts. Many alumni of the Arts Council Youth Programs have gone on to great success in a broad range of careers - from magazine editors, fashion designers and business owners - to distinguished Broadway performers and Grammy-winners. Arts Council Staff Spotlight: KATHERINE MACRAE Assistant Director We are as good as our people.

Katherine has been a major part of the Arts Council’s success since 1989. As Assistant Director, she is the driving force behind our ARTours and Campbell House Galleries, bringing impeccable grace and class to everything she does. Born in Carthage, NC, she has lived in many historic places, such as Carthage’s Alston House (a.k.a. House in the Horseshoe); Washington, DC; Philadelphia, PA; Miami, FL; and Cleveland, OH. To learn more about Katherine, we asked her several questions about her life at the Arts Council… What was the last experience that made you a stronger person? Travel wise—rearranging group flights out of Morocco after Air France went on strike. What is your favorite place in Moore County? Visiting the potters in northern Moore County where artists are creating beauty with their hands. What is your favorite aspect of working at the Arts Council? Meeting all the interesting people who make up our membership and knowing my efforts are appreciated. What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given? Slow down. Katherine MacRae (left) and Arts Council member, Jo DeWitt Wilson, enjoy a view of Venice’s Grand Canal during an ARTour to Italy.

Thank you, Katherine, for making the Arts Council a great asset to our community!

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: CHRISTINE HAGER-BRAUN Christine is a fiber artist from Durham, NC and will be the feature artist at Campbell House Galleries from September 6-26, 2019. Who or what are your artistic influences? I enjoy modern art, especially minimalism, with work by artists like Mark Rothko and Agnes Martin. What is your art about? My current work focuses on the power of art in the context of healing. My abstract art quilts aim to give the viewer a visual place to pause, reflect on life and find inner peace. They encourage stillness, emphasize the light around us and within us, but also explore acceptance and resilience. My intention as an artist is to celebrate life and facilitate well-being through my art.

“The Light Within” Batik fabrics, Machine-pieced, Machine-quilted; 48” x 44.5” x 0.25” Instagram: @SoularPowerFabricArt

What is your most memorable response to your art? In an artist talk coinciding with an exhibit of my work, I talked about the art quilts, “Wall of Depression” and “Wall of Shame.” Both pieces address mental illnesses and the stigma that surrounds these issues. Most memorable for me were all the individuals coming to see me after my presentation, sharing their stories and their personal experiences with mental health problems. My hope had been that my art pieces would start a conversation, and it was intensely gratifying to see that my work encouraged all those people to speak about their fears.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: JOANNA MCKETHAN Joanna is an artist, author, poet, and teacher who lives in Dunn, NC. She will be exhibiting her paintings, along with pottery by David Bridges, at Campbell House Galleries from October 4-25, 2019. What media do you work in? Watercolor, oil and pencil, and I cannot seem to give either discipline up. What is your art about? Beauty in the ordinary and decaying elements, perfect moments, and the warp color and light lend objects. What is the most memorable response to your art? Responding to the painting now showing in the Watercolor Society of NC’s exhibit at the Rocky Mount Imperial, I was told by a good friend, “I loooove ‘Executive Shoe Shine,’ I’m so struck by him. You have drawn me in and made me want to know everything about him. I can’t quit looking at him. This is flipping incredible!” “Castaway Shell” Oil on canvas; 42”x54” Facebook: @JoannaAMcKethanAuthor Twitter: @JoMcKethan Instagram: @ joanna_mckethan

What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given? From the chair of art at Methodist University when she took a printmaking course and asked her teacher: If you had several areas of talent, what would you do? She answered: She would concentrate on bringing every one of them up to the same degree of excellence. That is the artist’s continuing goal: skill, excellence, and empathy.

What media do you work in? Mostly oil; sometimes watercolor. Who or what are your artistic influences? Rothko, Turner, Whistler, Hans Hoffman What is your art about? Ocean, land forms, trees, water, air, sky. I look for and find balance in all of nature. Trying to duplicate that sense of balance is what my work is all about. I’m delighted by the endless variety of atmosphere that nature creates when all of her elements are combined. That’s sometimes what I feel when I paint…mixing primary colors to end up with a painting that makes me take a deep breath and be grateful for the beauty that surrounds us. What is your most memorable response to your art? Anger at my ineptness to capture what I feel and exhilaration when I feel I have. What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given? Paint what you know and love.
