Journeys Festival International is an annual arts festival that takes place across Leicester. The Festival curates, develops and commissions a varied programme of work created by artists from the refugee and asylum seeker community, and brings together work that explores the diversity of refugee experiences through artistic and creative encounters. Now in its seventh year, the 2019 programme spans 15 days and includes an inspiring and stimulating mix of live music, street theatre, interactive installations, films, talks and workshops. ArtReach produces and develops Journeys Festival International in collaboration with extraordinary artists, community groups, charities, arts organisations, volunteers and partners. We would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who makes the Festival possible.

ROOTS Group The ROOTS Group is a team of dedicated and inspiring individuals who come from around the world, made up of many ages, religions, languages and cultures. They get involved with projects, work with artists, create their own artwork, share their thoughts and guide us in creating the Festival each year. They challenge and help us to better understand the breadth of cultures, people and experiences from within their communities, supporting us to present an inclusive programme.

VISUAL ARTS //

The heart of this exhibition is a series of a hundred images by the UK photographer Giles Duley documenting the refugee crisis for UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees). From the horror of boats arriving in Lesvos, to stark portraits of people stood against white backgrounds, Duley tells the stories of refugees with the empathy his work is noted for. In the section dedicated to the families Duley has been documenting for years, we see the true face of this crisis. But this exhibition is also a celebration of life, of culture, and the human spirit. It is not a place that wants to create pity, rather a place to inspire change. In troubled times, when the refugee crisis can seem overwhelming, this exhibition aims to be a place of hope. FREE

by Jess Green (UK) James Chantry (UK) and Dimple Patel (UK)

IN COLLABORATION WITH AFTER 18

Thursday 15 – Friday 30 August Window spaces throughout Leicester City Centre and Curve theatre See journeysfestival.com for locations A Warm Welcome is an intergenerational project bringing together unaccompanied asylum-seeking young people with older and second generation refugees. Inspired by a letter written by Lord Dubs to newly arrived young refugees, the participants have worked with poet, Jess Green, to explore what they have learnt since arriving in the UK and what advice they’d give to new arrivals. In collaboration with visual artist James Chantry, the participants have transformed these letters into posters that will be displayed in window spaces across Leicester City Centre. The young people have also worked with Dimple Patel to create recordings which will be shared at www.journeysfestival.com

Saturday 17 & Thursday 22 August Soft Touch Arts 11.00am – 5.00pm Sunday 18 – Wednesday 21 August New Walk Museum and Art Gallery 11.00am – 5.00pm Daily workshop with the artist 12.30pm – 1.30pm The Channel is an installation that enables you to communicate across borders. For six days, people in Leicester will be able to connect with people indefinitely detained in UK immigration removal centres via the sculpture, which resembles an old fashioned phone box. You are invited to listen to messages from real people in these centres and join the conversation by adding your own voice to the artwork. The workshops and meals offered in the space give us the chance to ask how we can break down borders together in our communities. To launch and close the installation, Soft Touch invites you to a shared meal to celebrate our desire to connect across borders in Leicester. Launch Celebration: Saturday 17 August 11.00am – 2.30pm

This exhibition can be seen at Curve theatre throughout the Festival and will be open for you to explore before and after both performances of Pizza Shop Heroes by Phosphoros Theatre. See page 09.
