MARKOS “The Patriarch tiko” of Reisbe the source…”
“An Armenian in America” – Music with a message…
“If you ever happen to look into Marko’s repertoire, it will be like entering a small labyrinth. Once you listen to his songs, they will follow you forever, you can never forget them. They have a reason to exist, they are full of love and affection for the human being.”
from the book “Markos Vamvakaris: The Holy Buster”
riched by the tradition and the suffering of the immigrants that arrived in Piraeus during this period. It was then, when Rebetiko was born.
Markos Vamvakaris was born in the greek island Syra in 1905 and left to seek a better life to Piraeus in 1917. He lived his entire life between those two harbors that destined his fortune. He always carried inside him nice memories from Syra, but his world was en-
In 1933, he records his first album and in 1935 he writes the famous rebetiko song “Fragkosyriani”. Since then, he recorded many successful songs adored by Greek people due to their context, which described their lives. He was the first musician to introduce bouzouki in Greek discography. Forty years have passed since the death of Markos Vamvakaris. A new project, (artistic curator Lina Nikolakopoulou), with his long living songs premiered under the shadow of Acropolis, in the Athens Festival, in June 2012.
Lina Nikolakopoulou is one of the most emblematic figures of Greek music during the last 30 years. Lyricist, producer and distinguished multifaceted personage with a continuous and rich activity, she is considered a pioneer in her unique way of choosing and describing the themes of her songs. She was in the creative team of the ceremonies in the Olympic Games of Athens 2004. Her lyrics are sung by very important singers worldwide: E.Arvanitaki, H.Alexiou, A.Protopsalti, Milva, G.Dalaras etc. and have been translated in many foreign languages. She has collaborated with Mikis Theodorakis, Goran Bregovic, Vangelis, Manos Hadjidakis, Paolo Conte, Ara Dinkjian, Stavros Xarhakos etc. For further information, visit: www.e-theama.gr

“Dinkjian shines as an instrumentalist, interpreting his own themes and then using them as improvisation vehicles, often augmenting the textures with wordless vocals”. Songlines Magazine
The oud in Ara Dinkjian’s skillful hands turns into a powerful instrument that can offer musical knowledge and entertain the senses to create a soundtrack of a contemporary world. His compositions have been performed in thirteen languages by some of the most known singers or groups (E.Arvanitaki, S.Aksu and more), a solid proof that Ara Dinkjian bridges naturally the gap that is created between cultures that speak different languages. An aesthetic passport that needs no visa. He has formed “Night Ark”, (along with Arto Tuncboyacian), a band which has been a pioneering and deeply influential force in world music. Ara Dinkjian performs live all over the world in front of the enthusiastic audiences in Israel, USA, Turkey, Romania, Spain, UK (in the prestigious London Jazz Festival), Greece, Germany etc. His performance in WOMEX 2011 as an Official Selection amazed the audience and made their night a memorable one. Ara Dinkjian showcases his unique oud playing and timeless compositions in this series of shows. He collaborates on stage with some of
the best contemporary Greek soloists, who – following the Armenian oud soloist’s compositions – seek the common routes between the Balkans and the area of the Eastern part of Mediterranean, presenting their virtuosity through their improvisations. Ara Dinkjian’s compositions, based on his Armenian roots, are also influenced by his living in the western world (USA), along with a touch of jazz, his sound seems nostalgic but at the same time familiar. At the end, this is what Ara Dinkjian is: an Armenian in America…

Eleftheria nitacekifrom Greece” arvaExpe rien “A Live
“Her voice has clarity and emotional depth that registers whether or not you understand the words, and the music she sings has a lyricism and instrumental sophistication that sets it apart.”
World Music Rough Guide
The strength of Eleftheria Arvanitaki’s voice is unconstrained. It springs out from the living tradition of rembetiko, taking the colours of the emotions hiding in the rhythms of the Mediterranean and the Oriental world and the shape of the sublime rhythms existing in the dances of the traditional Greek glentia (feasts, celebrations).
She gives more than 150 concerts all around the world every year and her commercial success is a phenomenon for a Greek artist. Her voice and her unique way of combining traditional and contemporary Greek music, has made her one of the most wanted female singers for the creations of important composers, lyricists and poets. One after the other, all her personal albums effortlessly became platinum. Since 1997, she has extensively toured the world: Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa, America (USA, Latin America). She has performed in many important festivals and in the most prestigious venues of the countries she has visited. Her collaborations with the internationally acclaimed artists (Cesaria Evora, Dulce Pontes, Buika, Ara Dinkjian, Teofilo Chantre, Arto Tuncboyacian etc.) indicate her wide musical horizons and artistic vision. Two of the most important moments in her career have been the collaborations with the Oscar awarded composer Philip Glass (“Orion”) and with the Grammy awarded producer Javier Limón (“Mírame”, “Mujeres de Agua”). In contrast to many artists that augment the quantity of
their artistic activities trying to cope up with the very difficult situation of the recession era and the continuous decline in discography, Eleftheria Arvanitaki chooses to be very selective concerning her collaborations, live performances and recordings aiming to touch the hearts of every single person in her audience, tearing down all language barriers – if those ever existed…

NDRA LOXA“From Meyhane to Kafe Aman”: Seeking
the origins of rebetiko…
“Loxandra know their roots and put their own stamp on this music, moving it onward with nothing lost and something added.” fRoots magazine Loxandra Ensemble released in 2012 their most awaited new album “Meyhane–Kafe Aman” which steps on the roots of the common music tradition between Greece and Anatolia, emerging from the historical moving of populations in the beginning of the century. The album has received enthousiastic critics and has entered European World Music Charts. The name Loxandra is symbolic of a world that has ceased to exist – the Greeks of Anatolia (Minor Asia, Istanbul, Pontos, Capadoccia). The music they performed in the cities in places called “kafe-aman” was actually the precursor of “Rebetiko”. For further information, visit: www.loxandramusic.gr • www.myspace.com/loxandra
