widely recognised as being the best place for exhibitors to sell their items to the public at large directly. It is a great opportunity for visitors wanting to buy a gift in an exciting setting… and it is hard to leave the Fair without having bought something! It is an important opportunity for many artisans wanting to show off their new ideas to the public with renewed vigour, and to find new stimuli for gaining a better foothold on the market. The types of objects displayed vary greatly: from furniture to clothing, from household items to jewellery down to agri-food products. This year, part of the Fair will once again be given over to Ecoabitare, the first exhibition in this sector which is aimed directly at the end consumer. It features a series of products, finishes and systems that are environmentally sustainable, and high energy efficiency products, as well as furnishings for outdoors, for gardens and for wellness. The 2009 edition will see the participation of 150 exhibitors from Italy, Germany, France and Switzerland. Yet Econavigare is the real novelty for 2009: a new exhibition dedicated to small businesses that work in the nautical field as well as trailer-mountable vessels, accessories and pleasure boating. The opportunity to create this fair came out of the work done by the Lombardy Regional Authorities regarding the DRIADE project, the aim of which is to support the emergence of new forms of aggregation, local production systems and supply chains, as all are crucial factors for the economic state of Lombardy. Econavigare is set to become an important showcase, and an outstanding opportunity for encountering the small artisan businesses in this field: in fact some of the best boat yards to be found in Italy and throughout the world will be taking part, such as Cantiere Lillia boat yard (winner of the gold
medal in the Star category at the Atlanta and Athens Olympics) and the Cantiere Navale Cramar boat yard (winner of various national and world titles with its boats). In this field, too, a large slice of the companies are small artisan businesses that are family-run and handed down from generation to generation. The boats produced by these small boat yards are products of outstanding excellence, thanks to the combination of tradition and innovation. Artigiano in Fiera is a growing event undergoing constant transformation; it is capable of researching and being one step ahead of market needs, and encouraging the development and improvement borne out of competition. In addition, over the course of time it has managed to develop special events within the fair that help give the public a better understanding of the crafted item: through these collateral events (exhibitions, ateliers, conferences, demonstrations, etcetera) it becomes possible to understand the added value of a piece produced by an artisan by discovering the material used, the production process, the techniques, the place of origin (genius loci), and even the skills and identities of the workshops that produce them.

This year there will once again be a packed programme of events and live laboratories produced in conjunction with Lombardy’s Regional Authorities. They will vary from demonstrations of mosaic creation to textile design, illustrations for publishing and the production of ceramics. A major event then, and one that gathers together visitors not only from all over northern Italy, but also from abroad, and one which places Milan and Lombardy at the centre of this vast movement of works and people.
