The entire 311 Gallery family wishes to thank Carol Joy Shannon for her proactive stewardship of the gallery, wise guidance, and just plain good humor as she enters the next chapter in her truly artistic life. 311 Gallery welcomes 2015 with a new owner, Allen Clapp, a stellar list of new shows and a brand new website, www.311Gallery.com. 311 Gallery, the new name of the 311 West Martin Street Galleries & Studios, is still in the same great location that jumped started the Raleigh Warehouse Art District (recently acclaimed by USA Today as one of the top 10 art districts in the United States). Since its inception in 2007, the Gallery at 311 West Martin Street has had an award winning group of artists. Resident artists include: Kim Balentine, Kelly Blackington, Allen Clapp, Paul Cory, Annette Buckner Hall, Bekah Haslett, Local Color, Cheryl McCardle, Rob Manchester, Susan Miller, Cindi Moorefield, Melissa Poppe, Liz Roetzel, David Spector, Jeanette Stevenson, Sherri Stewart, Judy Stines, Mary Storms, and Tipping Paint Gallery. January’s exhibition, It’s All in the Details, kicks off the 2015 season. Drawing inspiration from nature, ancestry, memories, hopes, dreams and the creative process, Jeanne Rhea, Sharon DiGiulio, and Michelle Davis Petelinz create compelling abstract narratives. 311 Gallery will host an opening reception on January 2nd. See www.311Gallery.com for upcoming juried and invited-artist shows.

We had a wonderful year in our new location and thank all those who made it possible. We hosted three juried shows in 2014. In April, Eggistentialism, All Things Chicken, kicked off the Tour d’Coup, a tour of urban chicken coops and their gardens, and raised over $1,000 for the Urban Ministries of Wake County. In August we celebrated the Dog Days of Summer with a wide range of ideas for enjoying the summer heat. October’s show, Celebrating Life, helped raise awareness of Breast Cancer while raising donations for Pretty In Pink, an organization helping women afford treatment. Moving forward into 2015, we will be joining forces with 311 Gallery to sponsor new shows. We invite our artist friends to participate and everyone to come out and enjoy the vitality that is art in Raleigh. Tipping Paint Artists welcomed a new member at the end of 2014. Watercolor artist, Amy Beshgetoorian, craves color the way most people crave food. Usually, the thirst for a particular color is what determines what she paints. Amy is always searching for surprising color choices to pair with a particular subject. A turquoise zebra? Why not? With the gray days of winter ahead, be expecting some exciting pigment splashes. Inspired by Chinese watercolor master, Daniel Nie, Amy strives to get the most out of every brush stroke. She feels there is both energy preserved and mystery revealed in the use of a bold dash of paint. Amy Beshgetoorian, Beech Leaves

Featured Artist Carol Joy Shannon www.caroljoyshannon.com

Carol Joy Shannon is an award-winning artist whose work is sought by collectors around the world. Her wildlife work was juried into to the Southeastern Wildlife Festival for three years in the mid-decade; reproductions from the GEOMETRIX® series are popular items on art. com and allposters.com, and the City 52 LA City Series has been claiming walls in private, public and corporate collections since its debut. A desire to travel and learn kept Carol Joy’s life in almost constant motion for decades, resulting in work as various as milking sheep in Tuscany, singing songs in Monaco, crunching numbers for the Las Vegas library, and high tech R & D companies in Seattle and Charleston. She worked on cruise ships, delivered sailboats throughout the Adriatic and Aegean, worked for a foreign diplomat and ran sunset cruises in Key West. She wrote for newspapers in Eastern Europe and worked as an extra on films. Carol Joy moved to Raleigh, NC in 2000 (to work with Habitat for Humanity as an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer), married a Raleigh native and discovered Raleigh’s active art scene, which she quickly became part of, enthusiastically exploring genres and entering shows, until she found her own niche. Devoting years to fulltime application, classes, critiques, group work, juried shows and public exhibitions, Carol Joy has emerged with a signature style and a wide following. She was the featured artist in 2013 the Visual Art Exchange “For the Love of Art” annual auction, and is the poster artist for one of the top 100 art festivals in 2015. Her work has been seen in dozens of regional and national venues and she continues to exhibit in juried art events throughout the southern US. Something About the Milky Way

January brings in a new year, and exciting new shows at FRANK. The spotlight is on mixed media painters Luna Lee Ray and Linwood Hart, and ceramicists Susan Filley and Jim Lux. In addition, our special exhibition “Local: Inside and Out” features a celebration of all things NC. We are excited to present the first of a series of artist spotlight shows presenting four artists, Ray, Hart, Filley, and Lux, who have in common a passion for rich, layered surfaces. Whether developing texture through matte and metallic glazes, or paper collage and heavily manipulated paint, they all achieve lush, sensual depth and beauty. Also opening this month, “Local: Inside and Out” will explore what makes our home such a special place. Guests Catherine Carter, Steve Hessler, and Henry Link, as well as FRANK artists will share their visions of North Carolina. In addition to this “hometown” show, artists Sudie Rakusin, Carroll Lassiter, and Nerys Levy offer an opportunity to further explore the Triangle via “Travel Journal” expeditions in the area.* Each outing will take place in a new location and focus on art making in different ways. Also in January, the “Piedmont Regulators” will perform their own brand of ole time music for FRANK at our Last Thursday Salon on January 29. *Fee and registration required for the Travel Journal session.
