hen you take five years to plan your dream home, you want to make sure you’ll be in it long after your children have lives of their own. In a stunning new house in the exclusive Rolling Green neighborhood of Edina, one forward-thinking couple did just that, combining the best of family living — an open floor plan, loads of indoor and outdoor play spaces, a mudroom with racks for mittens and hats — with an aging-in-place pragmatism that includes a meticulously organized kitchen and a main-level master suite. Such practical considerations often can drain the romance out of a home. But in this case, they serve to showcase the homeowners’ and their design team’s creativity. The bulk of the main floor — an open layout that combines the living room, dining room and kitchen — is an artful combination of modern lines and organic accents, with beams from an 1820s farmhouse supporting the living room’s gabled ceiling. “They feel like art pieces,” says the owner. “They bring soul and character to the house.”
