Video Transport System Overview Features

The DL4000 Digital Video Transport System is a new generation of universal video transport leveraging Artel’s more than 25 years of carrier class video transmission experience. A small, rugged modular chassis, the DL4000 combines the space efficiency of a 1RU chassis with the flexibility of multi-module systems.

The DL4000 was designed from the ground up to be a video transport platform. Features such as multi-purpose, single piece function modules, compact ruggedized one rack unit chassis, a common set of external SFP optics, front panel accessible status LEDs and monitoring for each module are unique to the DL4000 and are ideal for video transport applications. In addition, a passive backplane with internal module to module interconnectivity and a NEBS Level 3 certified design make the DL4000 the most rugged and dependable video transport platform ever developed.

Side to rear cooling for unspaced stacking

In addition to the base DL4000 chassis, also available are the DL4042, DL4000P, and DL4100. These chassis increase both the flexibility and cost effectiveness of the platform. The DL4042 is a four slot chassis, sharing the dimensions of the DL4000 but with dual internal AC power supplies. The DL4100 is a compact unit that holds a single DL4000 based module, and the DL4000P is a passive 4 slot chassis designed to house DL4000 based WDM, CWDM, and DWDM optical multiplexers.

The DLC100 is unique in that one card can function as a transmitter, receiver, transceiver for bi-directional application or a repeater. This reduces inventory cost and simplifies deployment. The DLC100 provides 4 bi-directional multi-rate circuits in a single rack unit.

The DLC150E is a flexible audio embedder and video transport card designed for use in the DL4000 Digital Video Transport System. The DLC150E will embed analog or AES audio into SDI and SDTI as well as transport all standard 270Mb/s digital formats.

Use with DLC170DA for optical transport of Analog Video and Audio

The DLC170AD converts analog video and audio to SDI (SMPTE 259M) and provides optical transport. Used with the DLC170DA, the design insures full TV-1 RS250-C “short haul” analog performance over a true SMPTE 259M SD-SDI optical transport link.

The DLC170AD uses advanced high performance 12-bit video processing with adaptive 3D comb filters to convert NTSC-M / PAL-B/G analog composite video to ITU-R BT.601/656 compliant, 525 or 625 line, 4:2:2 component digital video. Four channels of analog audio are converted to 24 bit digital signals and sampled at 48 kHz and then embedded into the digital video per SMPTE 272M for a total of 4 analog channels. The audio can be inserted into any one of the four groups.

External Accessible SFP Transceiver Optics

Using the backplane to provide jumper free connections, additional audio channel groups can be added by cascading the DLC170AD digital output to one or more DLC150E audio embedders. An SFP installed into the final module provides the optical output of the combined signals.

A front panel monitor jack can be selected to output either analog or digital video. When set to analog, the incoming analog video can be checked for signal level and quality using conventional analog video equipment. The DLC170DA converts optically received SDI to Composite Analog Video (NTSC or PAL) and Analog or AES Audio. Used with the DLC170AD, the design insures full TV-1 RS250-C “short haul” analog performance over a true SMPTE 259M SD-SDI optical transport link. Additionally it can be used as an optical receiver for all digital signals from 19.39 ATSC to 1.485Gb/s HD-SDI making the DLC170DA ideal for the eventual conversion from Analog to Digital Video Transport.

The innovative module uses advanced video and audio processing for exceptional quality conversion of SDI (SMPTE 259M) to Composite Video and Analog Audio. It accepts a 270 Mb/s 525/625 line SDI input from either the optical SFP receiver or the backplane then converts it to Composite Analog and Audio signals. The received optical signal can be directed to the backplane for additional channel groups to be processed by other cards in the DL4000 chassis. Audio embedded per SMPTE 272M levels A, B, and C can be extracted as either four balanced analog audio channels or two stereo AES digital audio streams. A front panel video monitor with analog or digital selector switch allows the incoming digital (with embedded audio) or composite analog output to be monitored using conventional digital/analog video equipment.

The DLC200 provides for optical transport of 10Mb/s, 100Mb/s and 1000Mb/s Ethernet. A fully featured Ethernet Optical transceiver, the DLC200 has two externally accessible SFPs and one UTP (RJ45 port). The DLC300 is a flexible fiber optic transport module for all digital video formats from 19.39Mb/s (ATSC) to 2.97Gb/s (3G-SDI). The DLC300 is a single module, user configurable to function as a Transmitter, Receiver, or Repeater and supports route diversity as well as ATSC to DVB-ASI conversion.

Artel’s DLC710 is an innovative DL4000 based module for simple, automatic link verification of all standard digital video formats. The single module functions as both a signal generator and test monitor for 3G-SDI, HD-SDI, SD-SDI, DVB-ASI and ATSC and is ideal for automatic verification of single or multi-format video links.

A universal digital video link test and verification module, the DLC710 provides complete, one-touch “go-no-go” performance testing for all common video rates and formats. Its unique design allows for one or more formats to be selected simultaneously enabling automatic verification of multi-format video links. As a test signal generator the DLC710 outputs a continuous video signal of a single selected format or a timed sequence through each selected format. When configured as a monitor for a single format it will continuously monitor live digital video and indicate rate and physical layer signal quality. With more than one format selected the module automatically verifies each rate has been received. With this unique multi-purpose module verification of a multi-service video link can be performed in less than five minutes. Additionally, the DLC710 can monitor live digital video and indicate rate and physical layer signal quality. The DLC710 is an ideal solution for both initial link verification and de-bugging of faulty digital video circuits.

Artel designed its optical multiplexing products to address the issue of space and fiber constraint. For space efficiency, each module takes only one bay in a DL4000 based chassis. DL-Manager is an HTTP or SNMP v2 based Element Management System for monitoring and managing the DL4000 chassis and function modules. Embedded in the DL4000 chassis, power supply and function modules, DL-Manager requires no external software to monitor, override on board switches, or configure a DL4000 system. Using industry standard routers, multiple chassis can be monitored through a single ethernet connection.
