PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE In advance of Fresno DA Lisa Smittcamp’s presentation, I reviewed some medical literature on youth marijuana use. New research contradicts the common misperception that marijuana use is harmless. The psychoactive part of marijuana is THC. THC can quickly cross into the brain of adolescents and act on receptors that are critical to normal brain development. There are some studies suggesting reduced brain volume and impaired function of different parts of the brain in teens who use marijuana. Other studies reveal that regular marijuana use in adolescence is associated with an eight-point decline in IQ when measured in adulthood. Stopping use did not reverse this decline, suggesting that THC has long-lasting effects on the developing teenage brain. The results of a 35-year study confirmed the increased lifetime risk of schizophrenia with marijuana use in late adolescence. Schizophrenia is a severe, long-lasting disorder that leads to a devastating number of psychosocial problems. THC also affects other body parts. Chronic marijuana use in males can cause a decrease in testosterone and may inhibit release of hormones from the pituitary gland and the testicles. Intestinal effects include the newly described “cannabis hyperemesis syndrome.” In this odd condition, frequent marijuana users will have cyclic episodes of vomiting continued
