Miami and art of the African diaspora.

As an artist practicing in Miami, I am fortunate to be offered, somewhat regularly, works, exhibitions, practices, and discourses produced in the aesthetics and in the sociopolitical consciousness of the African diaspora. My views of this art scene have enlarged by such offerings. I hold as a resource, the processing of works seen, with particular formations and concerns, in relation to Miami and its history, and, also, to its curious geographical importance. My prime example is Kerry James Marshall: One True Thing, Meditations on Black Aesthetics, opened at Miami Art Museum, in February 2004. Marshall’s exhibition empowered us in our thinking of the practice of depicting black bodies, the role of fetishized objects, and the sustaining spaces resonant with radical or liberating traditions. I would also note many works, held in private and public collections or shown in exhibitions, function as tributaries to the stream of African diasporic consciousness; works by Edouard Duval-Carrié, Senga Nengudi, Tomás Esson, Maria Magdalena- Pons, Lorna Simpson, Wangechi Mutu, Stan Douglas, El Anatsui, Leslie Hewitt, Lynette Yiadom–Boakye, and Glenn Ligon. In lieu of listing of every artists that I can remember, I offer this guide for this season. " Bethany Collins, The Litany, a site-specific installation with a durational performance, to be presented, at Locust Projects, centers on language, texts, and reading to reveal the meaning in the structural framing of the diasporic life..
