1921 Painted portraits of Ida Rubinstein, Ivan Bunin. Created costumes and scenery for the ballet “Sleeping Beauty (La Belle au Bois Dormant)” by P. I. Tchaikovsky (choreography by Marius Petipa, reproduction by N. Sergeyev) for Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes (London, the Alhambra Theatre). This performance was the last major production of the artist. Participated in the exhibition of old and contemporary Russian art in the Paris La Boétie gallery. 1922 Due to the transfer of the order for a design of the opera “Mavra” to L. Survage, took Diaghilev to court and won the trial. According to his own scenarios, designed the following performances: the mimodrame “Villainy”, the vaudeville “Old Moscow” at Théâtre Fémina in Paris, and the ballet “Artemis troublee” in the Paris Grand Opéra. Wrote seven decorative panels on the plot of the fairy tale “Sleeping Beauty” for D. Rothschild’s mansion in London. Presented his new works at the solo exhibition at Knoedler gallery in New York. Took part in the International theatrical exhibition at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum. 1923 Wrote autobiographical novel “The brutal first love” (published in 2012 by Moscow publishing house “Art-XXI Century”). Lectured on contemporary art and costume in European and US cities. Published articles in the Paris newspaper Comoedia Illustré. Choreographed “Magic Night” to the music of Chopin (Grand Opera). Held a solo exhibition at the Arts Club of Chicago; participated in the exhibition of Russian art at the Brooklyn Museum (New York), in the exhibition “Russian lithograph for 25 years”. 1922–1924 Completed patterns in the Russian style for the production of textiles in the United States. 1924 Held a solo exhibitions of portraits in Los Angeles and Baltimore. Took part in the exhibition of Russian art in New York. On December 27, died in a hospital in Rueil Malmaison from the effects of a nervous fit, which happened to him during work for the ballet “Istar” by V. d’Indy for the troupe of Ida Rubinstein. He was buried in the Cimetiere des Batignolesin in Paris. Memorial exhibitions were held in the gallery of J. Charpentier in Paris (1925 and 1928), in Brussels (1926), in the gallery “Centaur” in Liège (1926), the Society of Fine Arts in London, and in Berlin (1927). 2015 The 38th session of UNESCO General Conference took a resolution to take part in the celebration of the 150th anniversary of Léon Bakst.
