ART4THEHOMELESS WEBZINE MAY 2013
1.8 Million kids are homeless right now 13 Will die tonight In American Street Kid, Filmmaker Michael Leoni sets out to shine a light on the epidemic of homeless youth in America and finally gives these forgotten children a voice. Spending countless days and nights on the streets of Los Angeles, Leoni is given a rare glimpse into the lives of the kids he encounters. Slowly breaking through their walls and building trust with the kids, he gets a view of their reality that few people ever see and finds himself forever changed. Once inside their world he realizes he can no longer be an observer; every day is a matter of life or death and he’ll do anything to get them off the streets. Over the years of filming, Leoni finds that underneath all of the pain and tragedy the kids have lived through… amazingly they still have hope. They want the same things any human being wants… to feel loved, to be acknowledged, to feel important, and to feel safe. Read more on Page 2 1

How you can help a homeless shelter without spending any of your money
HOMELESSNESS RELIEF ORGS YOU NEED 2 KNOW ABOUT
Here is a cool idea. Donte’K Haye of Kennesaw State (GA) designed a template for us to use for homeless awareness. That template is on the following page. The idea is to print it out, color it and make it your own. You can sell it to raise funds for either Art4TheHomeless or choose another homeless relief organization in your area. The only cost is really printing it out and the cost of makers which you can pick at any dollar store. It’s a fun project for the family and will help make a difference.
Each year, Covenant House Florida reaches hundreds of kids in Fort Lauderdale and Orlando via street outreach, crisis shelters, transitional housing projects, and aftercare, making us one of the largest private agencies serving runaway and homeless youth in the state of Florida. The demand for emergency shelter currently exceeds our financial capacity, and we have waiting lists in both Fort Lauderdale and Orlando. We ask all referral sources, e.g. law enforcement personnel, social service representatives, pastors, teachers, and guidance counselors, as well as youth and parents seeking help to call ahead to determine if a bed is available.
Continued from the Cover Page
In Fort Lauderdale, call 954-561-5559. In Orlando, call 407-482-0404. Covenant House Florida relies primarily on partnership from over 40,000 individuals from throughout Florida to reach out and respond to troubled youth. You can help.
Follow Leoni and the kids as they strive to overcome one failed system after another. Watch as they struggle to create a better life and free themselves from their tragic pasts. Their powerful stories and unrelenting hope and determination to create a better life shine through, in this true tale of love, friendship and the triumph of the human spirit.
Contribute financially — every dollar makes a difference. Donate essentials, especially hygiene supplies, baby items, and clothing — most of our kids wear adult sizes, and they need casual items like jeans and sneakers plus business attire for job interviews and work. Volunteer — opportunities are available in both program and support areas.

Paul Tristram is a Welsh writer who has poems, short stories and sketches published in many publications around the world, he yearns to tattoo porcelain bridesmaids instead of digging empty graves for innocence at midnight, this too may pass, yet.
With her hands in the litter bins she seeks out her next meagre meal. Through all the rotting cardboard her hands sadly yet hopefully feel. She no longer thinks of happiness it came and went a long time ago. Survival’s such a long, hard journey when your feet are so very sore. There is nothing in the bins today as she turns, she sheds no tears. She cried them all many years ago all that is left is hunger and fear.
One Black Eye Too Many She put some old clothes into a bag Then she walked out the front door. She tip-toed along the garden path Her face it still felt so very sore. This time she was actually doing it She was leaving the Bastard for good. She was sick of all his promises All his drunken lies were now no good. She’d put everything into that marriage She wanted love but did not find any. So she left feeling weak and weary After getting one black eye too many.

Art appreciation can be applied to all types of arts. Painting, drawing, photography, music and writing is generally found under this subject. There is one art form that is generally far from being on this list. It is the art of tattooing. I have spent most of my life prejudice towards tattooing. I could not understand how anyone wanted art they might regret later down the road. The repeated needle sticking was not appealing as well. Last year I started watching a show about a bunch of tattoo artists. Their common goal was to be the best in their field. At first I watched for the hilarity of some of the participants but over time their work started to stand out. I watched as the people with the best skills and work ethic progressed towards the top. Those who had heart and passion for their work took the time to make sure their work was neat, the texturing was awesome, the colors worked for the piece and the person they were working on. I soon decided to get my own tattoo. Something personal that fit my
personality and style was the only way I could do it. I researched and compared tattoo shops in the Shreveport/Bossier City, Louisiana area. The shop that stood out to me the most was Sacred Temple. I had never heard of them but they had a lot of great reviews for their custom work. When I went in for a consultation they were happy to take my original work and turn it into a work of art. The artist took his time with the details of the work. The fact that he stated that he was proud of the works he's done had me confidant that he would do a good job. When the work was done my tattoo looked awesome. Going to a shop that saw the body as a temple meant that they only wanted to put works of art on you worthy of being worn and shown. My advice is to not look down on a form of art you're unfamiliar with. Make sure you study it before you create an opinion. Also, make sure if you're getting something permanent put on your body make sure it's a work of art that's tied to your passion, heart or soul.
Da Creative Genius: DTM
The Art4TH Zine would like to introduce a new columnist, Daniel Flores aka DTM, DaCreativeGenius. Daniel Flores, born in East LA with a pencil in his hand.
group artshows curated by DTM, and include programs that give artists access to business information and professionals who can help an artist career get off the ground.
Art became the number one fixture in his life with strong images of Aztec Warriors and Chicano Pride. Pop culture played its part as well: the earliest surviving drawing by Daniel is a line sketch of a shark rising to the surface of the water as a boat sits calmly at the top. The water surface is defined by a single line drawn across the page and the shark is nothing but a curved line with teeth in the middle.
DTM is always open to new experiences and that has brought him to the tech industry by way of Startup Weekend, RHOK and various mobile and next web developers and entrepreneurs. Inspired by the work of others at Hypepotamus, ATDC, 151 Locust and Flashpoint, DTM has taken the step to working with rising startups like Get Goals, Synapp.io and his own Mobile Game Startup Visual Art Werks at Atlanta Tech Village.
Some of DTM's accomplishments include: First Minority owned Tattoo Studio in Atlanta,Vantage Pointe Studios 1997-2005, featured in various Atlanta and National Tattoo Publications. In 20005 DTM participated in a group Art Exhibit that was featured inside the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Art + Beats & Lyrics. Thank you for downloading my free gem and mineral’s collection guide! I am the Gems and Minerals Diva and I blog about various gems and minerals I come across, wire wrap, or am fascinated with. I am not a geologist but a wire artist who makes jewelry. I first got into wire wrapping by wanting to create my own jewelry and once I opened up to the energies of different gemstones, I was amazed and am still learning more about myself everyday. You will be too, if you so choose.
In many religions, the writers of religious texts talks about God’s power and how He (Or She depending on which religion you may follow) uses the power to heal and love. God has gifted all of us with this energy and not just us–but it’s in every stone, breath, ounce of coffee, smile and everything else around us. We refer to people who tap into this energy as “psychics” but in actuality, we all have these gifts. It is up to us to decide whether or not we want to use it. If you do, please use it for the right purposes.
Crystals, gemstones, and minerals are the the magic of the Earth. For eons, humans have used them in many ways from healing to protection. Ancient apothecaries would combine herbal remedies with certain crystals to enhance the power of their healings. Shamans would go on spiritual journeys with grounding journey stones for protections. Even the Bible talks about gems and crystals. Crystal healing and therapy have been around for ages. Of course, you don’t have to believe in that if you don’t want to. You could just be a collector or someone who wants to indulge in a new hobby. I will promise you this: once you start working with crystals and begin to open your mind, you will experience the magic of the Earth– you have to have faith.
If you are a first time gem collector and want to start your own collection, there are some things you need to know. Some gems and minerals can be toxic , and they all have different structures. I recommend going into a gem shop and browsing around. Some gems are cheap and others are expensive. They come in many different colors and each one is unique in it’w own way. Go to the shop, pick up the stones and ‘feel’ it’s energy. Does the color speak to you? What is the texture like? Is it rough, smooth? Is it cut and faceted or tumbled. Is it wire wrapped or soldered?
There are many shapes to crystals but they naturally occur in seven geometric forms: triangles, rectangles, hexagons, rhomboids, parallelograms, or trapeziums. Many are fragile and some are even water soluble–meaning they will melt. If you are not displaying them, the wrap them in a silk or velvet material for protection. Some crystals need energetic cleansing. All Quartz crystals are self-cleansing but some like Malachite absorb negative energy and can’t release it. Depending on the stone and whether or not it’s toxic or water soluble, usually running water is great for washing away dark or stagnant energy. For the others, I recommend smudging them with sage which clears out all negative energy. Meditating with crystals is the best way to bond with it. All you have to do is hold your stone in your hands and sit quietly with it. Focus on your breathing and breathe slow deep breaths. You can listen to music, or soft, rhythmitic drumming and breathe to the beat of the drums–deep breath in, hold for a beat, slowly release, pause before the next in breath.
Crystals are often categorized by their elements and what Chakras they work with. For those of you who are not familiar with Chakras, I will explain. A Chakra is simply an energy portal in your body. You have seven along your physical body, one beneath your feet and three above your head. They are all different colors. Your Earth Star Chakra is the one beneath your feet. Then you have your Root Chakra which is at the base of your spine. Your Sacral Chakra is just below your navel, your Solar Plexus Chaktra is in the center of your body, then you have your Heart Chakra which is by your heart. Followed by it is your Higher Heart Chakra which is directly above your Heart Chakra. Then there’s your Throat, Third Eye (pineal gland) and Crown Chakras. Crystals are often used to clear energy blockages within Chakras to help you live a better and more spiritual life. Each of your physical Chakras have a color and what is really cool is that they have matching colored gems to work with each chakra. Red Stones: Base Chakra Brown Stones: Earth Star Chakra Yellow Stones: Solar Plexus Chakra Orange Stones: Sacral Chakra Green and Pink Stones: Heart Chakras Blue/Indigo: Throat and Third Eye Chakras Violet: Third Eye and Crown Chakras Clear/White: All Chakras Some gemstones work with one or more or sometimes all Chakras. Elements Each Gem is given an element. There are five Elements. Usually, the color of the gem will give a good hint to it’s element as well as the Chakras the gem works with. Earth (Stones such as Jasper and Smoky Quartz) Fire (Heliodor, Citrine, Ruby) Water (Aquamarine, Emerald) Air: (Blue Calcite) Storm (Moldavite)
Quartz Quartz is very powerful and amplifies energy. It’s like that amp you plug a guitar into and boom! It’s so powerful that computers, watches, and cel phones all have quartz in them. Quartz comes in every color possible and raises your energy to it’s highest point possible. Quartz also amplifies thought, as well as the effect of other crystals. It absorbs, stores, releases and regulates energy. Clear Quartz draws off negative energy of all kinds, and it balances the mental, emotional and spiritual bodies. It cleanses and enhances the organs and subtle bodies and acts as a deep soul cleanser, connecting the physical dimension with the mind. Clear Quartz enhances psychic abilities. It aids concentration and unlocks memory. It is also programmable meaning that you can store energy in it and focus that energy in meditation, healing, or rituals.
Rutilated Quartz Rutilated Quartz is quartz that has Rutile, a mineral that is composed of Titanium Oxide. It illuminates the soul and promotes spiritual growth while also cleansing and energizing your aura. It protects against ill thoughts of others and helps you see the root of your problems. It gently soothes dark moods and is perfect for anyone who is depressed. It also relieves fears and phobias while helping you to forgive.
Rutilated Quartz is an ally for those with chronic illnesses and infertility. It aids the exhausted and treats bronchitis, regenerates your cells and repairs torn tissue. It’s also great for absorbing mercury poisoning from nerves, and the blood. Rutilated Quartz contains all the properties of clear quartz as well.
Lapis Lazuli is a protective stone that contacts spirit guardians, recognizes and blocks psychic attacks, reverses curses, opens the third eye and balances the throat chakra.
Rainbow Moonstone has a reflective and calming energy that helps to strengthen intuition and psychic perception while bringing balance and harmony with all that is
It eases pain, especially migraines and overcomes depression. It is a powerful thought amplifier and encourages creativity by simply attuning your energy with that of Divine energy. It reveals inner truth and gently encourages you to be self aware.

It brings deep peace and holds in serenity. Lapis Lazuli has been used by the ancient Egyptions for many things including jewelry, and they would even crush it to make eye shadow.
Rainbow Moonstone vibrates with the energy of the Goddess, and also the energies of the waxing and full Moon. It helps to strengthen intuition and soothes stress. It gently soothes women’s hormones when they are in overdrive.
Super Seven and Cacoxenite You will come across a few gemstones and minerals that have been trademarked and unfortunatley, there are those who will trademark a regular quartz and name it and hike up the price. Supers Seven, however, is not such a stone, in my opinion. When I bought the above piece, it was a Super Seven. Now, due to Trademark laws, the person who trademarked it only wants the cut and polished gems to be called Super Seven and the rough version is called Cacoxenite. However, Since I bought it as a Super Seven before the trademark of the gem went into effect, I am listing the properties of all the seven minerals. Super Seven opens up all the senses and is considered an important stone for stimulating and developing all types of psychic abilities, including telepathy, clairvoyance, clairaudience, channeling, telekenesis and more. It is called Super Seven because it’s composed of seven minerals: Amethyst (see Amethyst) Clear Quartz (See Clear Quartz) Smoky Quartz (See Smoky Quartz) Cacoxenite-facilitates spiritual awakening, promotes new ideas and understanding, It helps you to see the positive, side of life. Rutile (See Rutilated Quartz) Lepidiocrocite-stimulates intellectual pursuites and helps promote grounding, centering, clear thoughts, expanding your knowledge. Goethite-is hydrated iron oxide and opens communication. It amps up your psychic abilities and helps lessen the distractions while meditating.
Amethyst Amethyst is a powerful and protective stone. It guards against psychic attack, transmuting the energy into love and protecting the wearer from all types of harm, including geopathic or electromagnetic stress and ill wishes from others. Amethyst relieves stress and strain, soothes irritability, balances mood swings, dispels anger, rage, fear and anxiety. Alleviates sadness and grief, and dissolves negativity. Amethyst activates spiritual awareness, opens intuition and enhances psychic abilities. It has strong healing and cleansing powers. Amethyst encourages sobriety, having a sobering effect on overindulgence of alcohol, drugs or other addictions. It calms and stimulates the mind, helping you become more focused, enhancing memory and improving motivation. Amethyst is a great sleep aid because it relieves insomnia. Place under a pillow for a very restful sleep.
Apophyllite Pyramid Apophyllite Pyramids are supercharging energizers that enhance your vision with through your third eye. If you look through the base of the pyramid and into the apex, you open up a star gate. Apophyllite Pyramids are naturally occurring and like all pyramids they can be used to charge up other stones or objects. Apophyllite carries the Akashic Records and it’s presence enhances the energies as a powerful transmitter wherever the stone is. Apophyllite soothes the mind and reduces stress by releasing negative thought patterns. It instills divine and universal love on all levels.
Moldavite When you are buying Moldavite, I must warn you that there are a lot of fakes flooding the market. The best way to tell them apart besides a microscope is simply this: Experience the “Moldavite Flush” or a warming sensation. Real Moldavite will react with you. You will feel a buzz and intense heat–depending on how open you are. I’ve seen people turn bright red and have experienced it myself. Different pieces have different levels of energy–the more heavier in weight they are, the more intense they are (and the darker they are) Moldavite is a gem that came from the stars. It is extraterrestrial in origin and enhances angelic/extraterrestrial communication via telepathy. It hit the earth around 6 million years ago with an impact so strong that it would have taking at least 6 times the amount of force of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. The meteor that struck and left behind the Moldavite went through to the core of the earth, some scientists are still debating that fact. Moldavite is the only gem/mineral that is known for curing homesickness. If you move a lot, or just left home for the first time, it’s a great companion to have but be warned, this gem will transform your life. It will flip you upside down and make you go, “Whoa!” if you are not grounded. Grab a rose quartz to gently ground you. Some people actually break out when handling Moldavite, so be very careful when handling this gem. If you purchase, always do it from a reputable dealer. Several ways to spot a fake are: Ÿ Do they have seams? Real Moldavites do not have straight lines running through them. Ÿ Do they have texture–real Moldavites have texture and do not feel like plastic. Ÿ Many counterfeiters incorporate fakes into wire wrapped jewelry. As a wire artist myself, I only purchase my Moldavites either from Crystal Blue (Atlanta, GA) or Power of the Rainbow (DFW, TX) and both get theirs straight from the source. Ÿ Clear as glass–Moldavites are not clear unless you hold them up to the light. Only then are they transparent and you can see on the inside the textures. Ÿ Price. Currently, Moldavites are $25 a gram and will be going up. Unless you know the person selling the gem, I wouldn’t buy. I have one listed for sale just barely over that price but I managed to grab that Moldavite from my source just before the price went up. If you wish to have a wire wrapped Moldavite, it is best to purchase the stone and have the artist wrap on commission.
Smoky Quartz Smokey Quartz is the grounding stone. It knocks out all negative vibrations and detoxifies everything in it’s path while prompting elimination of the digestive system and protecting against radiation and electromagnetic smog. Smokey Quartz eliminates fear, lifts depression and negativity. It brings emotional calmness, relieving stress and anxiety. Smokey Quartz aids concentration and assists in communication difficulties. Smokey Quartz dissolves cramps, strengthens the back and fortifies the nerves. Along with the healing properties of Quartz, which is the master healer, Smoky Quartz also relieves pain and soothes away depressions.
Agate Agate balances the physical body and harmonizes it with the mind and spirit. It stabilizes the aura and not only transform negativity, but eliminates it. It’s your all in one energy recycling center. Agate helps you concentrate and focus, enhances mental function and analytical abilities. It soothes and calms inner anger and heals tension. Agate creates a sense of security and safety. Agate heals the eyes, stomach, uterus; treats the lymphatic system and pancreas and also strengthens your blood vessels. It also heals skin disorders. There are several types of Agate: Fire Agate Botswana Agate Tree Agate Moss Agate Chalcedony (Carnelian) Onyx Dendritic Agate Brazilian Agate White Agate Bull’s Eye Agate
Heliodor is Greek for “Gift of the Sun” and is a warm gem of comfort. It helps you to empathize with others and to feel comfortable doing that. It is a high energy stone–and yes, I’ve drank an elixir from it and experienced a 48 hour waking period–and helps you in your spiritual quest.
Danburite gently and powerfully works with your crown chakra then opens your heart chakra and then connects them together for a powerful spiritual healing energy. It has a sweet vibration and pure energy that soothes and promotes joy. It uplifts any depressed spirit.
If you have issues with a close friend or family member, meditating with Heliodor will help you understand the situation better. Hold it or wear it while you are around this person but be careful because it will also, as stated above, help you empathize with them. You don’t want to cord them–cording is simply attaching an ethric cord (unintentionally or intentionally) to another person’s chakras.
Danburite helps you access your higher consciousness from a love centered perspective while also helping you to analyze the connection on a mental and intellectual level.
If you have corded with them, use Red Jasper and Quartz to gently release the cords and ground yourself. Black Tourmaline will help shield you from cording.
is a highly spiritual healing stone that gently yet powerfully opens the crown chakra then links and attunes it with the heart chakra. It is a healing crystal with a very sweet and pure vibration, with an energy that is extremely uplifting to the spirit. Danburite is not just a Crown and Heart chakra stone but it also access all the other higher chakras to the 14th level.
Citrine Citrine is like a 24 hour version of those five hour energy shots–but one that detoxifies, cleanses and opens not just your chakras, but also your blood circulation. It brings joy, delight, and enthusiam. It boosts up your self esteem and confidence, motives your brain and attracts wealth, prosperity and success. Citrine teaches you that you have to let go of that “I can’t” mentality that is holding you back from your desires. It not only attracts abundance, but the mentality that you have to have in order to receive the abundance. Citrine is a golden/yelllow Quartz and includes all the other properties of this Master Healer along with your kidneys, speen, pancreas, eyes and thymus.
Herkimer Diamond Herkimer Diamonds are a unique type of Quartz. They are found in the Herkimer mines up in New York and like Diamonds, nothing can scratch their surface. They are always double terminated–meaning that they have two points. Herkimers are great for the ascension process and will take you to your highes spiritual vibration possible while still being in your body. Be prepared for a rush. They are great for astral travel will link you quickly–sometimes too quickly–to the astral plane. Like all Quartz, these are are powerful amplifiers and self cleansing. They will super charge any stone/atmosphere around them. Herkimers will open up all of your chakras and will stimiluate and open you to psychic experiences if you meditate with them. Again, grounding is important so I advise to use a Smoky Quartz or Black Tourmaline to keep you grounded.
There are millions of different minerals and gems out there and this is just a small guide to get you started. If you would like to learn more about gems and minerals, I suggest you pick up the book, The Crystal Bible, by Judy Hall. It is a huge resource for me. Be sure to check out your local rock shops–get on Google and do some research. Use the keywords “Metaphysical stores” and your city or zip code and Google will pull those right up for you.
