Treviso Cathedral Codice 15 (I-TVd 15). Complete Edition FOREWORD The Codice 15 is one of the most valuable and unknown sources in the Treviso Cathedral Archive. This choirbook was copied in 1569. It contains eight anonymous Magnificats, one for each tone, copied along 47 folios. In the index only the title Magnificat a 5 can be read.

All the Magnificats are for second vespers: they set in polyphony the even verses of the Magnificat, leaving the odd verses to be sung in plainchant. Although the index indicates that these eight Magnificats are for five voices, only the Magnificat Septimi toni ends with five voices. The other six Magnificats end with six voices, except Magnificat sexti toni, finishing with eight voices. Toni Primi Secundi Tertii Quarti Quinti Sexti Septimi Octavi

There are two relevant Magnificats that could be defined as “homage” Magnificats: the Magnificat Sexti toni increases one voice in each verse, beginning with three voices and ending with eight, exactly the same plan as the Magnificat Tertii and Octavi toni by Nicolas Gombert. The other special Magnificat is the Magnificat Septimi toni, that could be also named as Magnificat La sol fa re mi: in the final verse the Bassus repeats fifteen times an ostinato with the notes A G F D E (=La sol fa re mi). Was this an intended homage paid to Josquin’s Missa La sol fa re mi or to the homonym Mass by Jacquet de Mantua?
