Relais-Châteaux Atrium on San Mateo Square, Cáceres The new Relais-Châteaux Atrium on San Mateo Square, Cáceres, regards the city using the initial presuppositions that brought it into existence, striving to imagine how it could be accomplished in our time, and make living contemporary architecture cohabit with an historic setting in a respectful, dignified way. The new building sits on the site of two quite distinct constructions in the heart of the city’s historic precinct. One was a three-story auxiliary building aligned with Los Condes Street, and the other was a tall two storey dwelling built in the early ‘80s on San Mateo Square. Like a domestic hermit crab inside a lifeless shell, the new building fits into these structures, both considerably degraded due to their lack of use over the years. The new use revitalizes and rehabilitates the old buildings, establishing an organic symbiosis that takes on a new contemporary meaning. The project contains two complementary activities: the new Atrium restaurant and a small Relais-Châteaux hotel with just fourteen rooms. The hotel reception, restaurant and kitchen areas are on the ground floor, with all the guest rooms on the upper floor. Circulation on these floors revolves around a atrium that gives the complex a scale and draws a connection to the traditional homes and palaces that populate this historic city. A discrete indoor recreational area above the first floor guest rooms opens onto the garden, with two small ponds at the rear. A small terrace with distant views of the countryside and the historic part of Caceres opens directly onto San Mateo Square. A pergola is inserted between these two differentiated areas in order to soften the environs of the Square with the presence of green creepers. The new functional organism adapts to the irregular perimeter of the extant buildings, manifesting itself outwardly in the courtyard garden by weaving a tapestry of slender white concrete columns with black bakelite and timber frames. Inside, the furniture and the works of art are set placidly on white-painted oak wood, aimed at unifying the different areas of the new building. Black granite, laid like timber flooring, defines the neutral plane of the hotel and restaurant activity. The differentiated zones create intimate spaces with radically domestic furnishing, opening their eyes discretely onto the public spaces, the street, the atrium and the garden, making what is necessary seem nearby, and what is nearby seem necessary.
