Your local community magazine supporting local business

JUNE 2013 ‘Around Magazines distributed to over 7,000 homes and businesses in Rugby every month’.

Welcome to the June edition of Around Rugby! Hello there! Can you believe it’s June already? Although we have taken advantage of our last Bank Holiday until August, this month we do celebrate the official birthday of Queen Elizabeth II on June 15th and Fathers Day and the Martyrdom of Guru Arjan Dev on 16th. So, what’s happening in Rugby at the moment? Well, the proposed development of the Elliott’s Field Retail Park has recently been approved by Rugby Borough Council’s Planning Committee which paves the way for work to start on the site. It is likely that the new stores will be open and trading by 2015 which is great news for Rugby shoppers. Work is also underway on our new crematorium and cemetery off Ashlawn Road. It is hoped that the facility will serve not only Rugby but also Daventry, whose District Council has worked closely with Rugby Borough Council on the project. Completion of the build is expected within 12 months.

Our competition this month highlights the Rugby Festival of Culture which runs from 28th June to 14th July. Entrants have the opportunity to win one of 5 family tickets to the open air performance in Caldecott Park on Saturday 6th July. So, get your entries in quickly as our draw will take place at 1.00pm on 28th June. We will need to let winners know as soon as possible as the event is just one week after the draw. If all this work going on is tiring you out, why not take a few more minutes to relax and read through this month’s magazine. I’m sure you’ll find something interesting in it.

Amanda PS Please can we make an APPEAL on behalf of Jeff and Julie Hetherington. The couple host an Autumn Bazaar at Rugby United Reformed Church, Hillmorton in September in aid of animal charities and are asking for anyone who makes jams, chutney’s, cakes, biscuits or can provide fresh produce etc to help them out with donations this year. If you can help, please contact Julie or Jeff on 01788 552771

We are also excited to hear proposals for a refurbishment of the Clock Towers, a department store and new cinema in the town centre. Entries can still be made for the Rugby in Bloom Competition. Anyone can enter – individuals, businesses and community groups. If you are interested, or know anyone else that is, information and entry forms can be found at the Visitor Centre at Rugby Library, Art Gallery and Museum, the Town Hall and online at www.rugby.gov.uk/rugbyinbloom. You have until 5th July to enter.

MAYOR OF RUGBY ENDORSES NEW HOMES Bloor Homes recently welcomed the Mayor of Rugby, Councillor Kathryn Lawrence to its Eden Park development in Rugby, to view the show homes and find out more about the buying options available to local buyers. Vanessa Macnee Sales Director of Bloor Homes comments: “We were very pleased to welcome The Mayor of Rugby to Eden Park and give her a tour of the development. Councillor Lawrence’s visit coincides with our recently launched ‘Help To Buy’ initiative, announced in the Chancellor’s budget on 20th March, which means buyers are able to afford a new home here with just a 5% deposit!” Councillor Lawrence comments: “My theme for my mayoral year is to ‘celebrate Rugby – our past, present and future’. As our town expands there is a growing need for family homes. This development is an example of new opportunities to purchase a family home and I wish every new homeowner a happy and long residency in Rugby.” Under the ‘Help To Buy’ initiative, a buyer hoping to purchase a newly built home will be able to take out a mortgage for just 75% of the cost of the property, provided they can put down a 5% deposit. Those who qualify will be eligible for an “equity loan” worth up to 20% of the value of the property, funded by the government, which will be interest-free for the first five years. The homes at Eden Park are all designed differently to suit a variety of needs and lifestyles. The houses are finished to a high specification, which is the trademark of the Bloor Homes brand, with prices starting at £142,000 (with Help To Buy) for the three bedroom Bampton at Eden Park. Eden Park is located just outside Rugby town centre, where there is a wide range of shops, restaurants and bars, as well as a variety of sports facilities. For commuters, there are regular services to central London with a journey time of approximately 50 minutes. The development is also within easy reach of the M6 and M1 motorways.
