Your local community magazine supporting local business

AUGUST 2013 ‘Around Magazines distributed to over 7,000 homes and businesses in Rugby every month’.

Welcome to the August edition of Around Rugby! Hi there! I hope you have all enjoyed the blue skies and warmth that July brought us and the heat wasn’t too much for you. Let’s hope August allows us good weather – particularly if you have children at home to entertain! Remember to check the What’s On page for child friendly activities this month. Dates to celebrate this August include Lailat al Qadr on 3rd and Eid-ul-Fitr on 8th. Not forgetting of course, our last Bank Holiday before Christmas on 26th – make the most of it. What’s going on in your town right now? Firstly, we can look forward to the long awaited opening of our new Sports Centre at the end of the month. (Our competition prize in this edition is a family membership for 2 adults and 2 children!) Plans move forward for a new Community Centre in Cawston and further development at Central Park. We also have more new businesses to look out for: we have a new Subway outlet at the Junction One retail park, a Pizza Hut delivery outlet due to open on Regent Street in the Town Centre and a new community café called The Hub situated in the space vacated by Hunts Book Shop in High Street. Taking a quick look back at July’s events and congratulating you all. Well done to all participants in the Rugby Race for Life. Get in touch with Around Rugby’s Managing Director, Amanda Avery... t: 01788 440015 m: 07841831127 e: amanda@aroundmagazines.co.uk www.aroundmagazines.co.uk

This is such a worthy cause and it’s great to see so many individuals remembering and celebrating those close to them. We also congratulate everyone involved in Rugby’s Festival of Culture. Whether you were a volunteer, performer or just an onlooker, you all played a part in the success of the event. Particular praise goes to Big Help Management who produced and directed a fabulous concert at St Andrews Church. ‘Step into the West End’ was a celebration of musical theatre and West End shows such as Wicked, We Will Rock You and Whistle Down the Wind. The choir of 1119 year olds was formed from open auditions and had only 4 weeks to rehearse together. The concert raised hundreds of pounds to be divided between the church and the Benn Partnership. Finally, our congratulations to Rugby St Andrews RFC for staging the brilliant ‘Hamplified 2013’ – another great event in aid of a very worthy cause - The Matt Hampson Foundation.

Amanda PS A last minute note of congratulations to the Royal family – a little late but the new Prince arrived just as we were going to print. He shares his birthday with WWF superstar Shawn Michaels, rugby star Ben Foden, Indy Car driver Scott Dixon, footballers Dirk Kuyt and Stewart Downing, musicians Don Henley (Eagles) and Daniel Jones (Savage Garden) and actors Terence Stamp, Rhys Ifans, Danny Glover and Willem Dafoe. And me!

Summer is now in full swing the schools have broken up, temperatures are soaring and the sun is shining! This is great news for us and our fundraisers holding outside events. Our summer fetes maybe over for another year but there are still lots of ways you can support us over the coming months.

Riders can enjoy a BBQ in our grounds after completing the event. Registration costs £15 to £25 depending on the route chosen. To find out more call 01926 838827 or visit www.mytonhospice.org

Thank you

Go Gaga and get into the party spirit for this year’s Moonlight Walk in aid of The Myton Hospices. Around 800 women are expected to take to the streets of Warwick and Leamington on Saturday 14th September for the charity’s much loved sponsored walk. And this year there are two shorter routes of 3 or 5 miles to choose from along-side the original 8-mile stretch. The night-time event will start and end in the grounds of Warwick Castle and will begin with live performances from pop sensations Lady Gaga and Madonna* (*tribute acts) who will even be teaching them a few routines to help walkers prepare for the task ahead. Registration costs £10. Don’t miss out.

We would like to say a big thank you everyone who attended our summer events this year. Our Warwick Summer Fete on 14th July was a great success and raised almost £17,000. Hundreds of people filled the grounds of our Warwick hospice to enjoy the atmosphere, tuck into tasty hotdogs, shop on the stalls and sip refreshing glasses of Pimms. Our recent Coventry Summer Market on 29th June organised by our Coventry volunteers was also a huge success and raised £6,468.69. Members of our Rugby Support Group also held a summer fete for us at our Rugby Hospice on 1st June and raised £1,012.60 which is fantastic. We would also like to thank all of the people who kindly donated items and gave up their time to volunteer – we couldn’t do it without you! Cycle challenge Are you a keen cyclist? If so why not enter our Cycle Challenge on Sunday 18th August. Participants can choose from three routes of 45, 60 or 80 miles which all start and end at our Warwick Hospice.

Moonlight Walk

Sign up today at www.mytonhosppice.org or call 01926 838815 for more information. We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who gives their time and money to support us. We can’t do it without you!

Seeing Double

The Girls Lori Lansens Rose and Ruby Darlen are conjoined twins who narrate their own story of what it’s like to quite literally grow up, together. Joined at their heads, Rose carries her smaller sister Ruby around on her hip. Set in a small town in Ontario, Canada, the Darlen twins give us a rare glimpse into their lives. Learning about how the two young women cope with the ordinary, while being very much an extraordinary pair makes for an amazing read. I know This Much is True Wally Lamb In an act of protest over war in the Middle East, paranoid schizophrenic Thomas Birdsey cuts off his hand in a public library. As Thomas decides not to reattach his hand, his twin brother, Dominick decides to help him escape the confines of his mental institution. The novel draws emotional parallels between the lives of the two twins and the internal struggles of the one ‘normal’ twin who certainly has more than his fair share of demons to contend with. Twelfth Night William Shakespeare It all begins with a shipwreck and Viola, having been washed up on the coastline of Illyria, believes that her twin brother Sebastian is lost to the tempestuous

In August we celebrate twinning. I’m not talking Swanage with Rudesheim…more Arnie and Danny De Vito. It’s Twins Festival Day on the fourth and we’ve managed to find some fantastic books that feature not one, but two great protagonists.

sea. Viola is rescued by a sea captain, disguises herself as a young man (as you do) and starts working for the Duke, Orsino who thinks he’s in love with Olivia. Viola acts as a gobetween to convey the Duke’s love for Olivia, who herself promptly falls in love with the disguised Viola. Meanwhile, Viola falls in love with Orsino. Confused? You should be. It has everything we’ve come to know and love about the Bard: mistaken identity, unrequited love, buffoons and a girl pretending she’s a boy. Her Fearful Symmetry Audrey Niffenegger Identical twins Julie and Valentina live in America but have just inherited a flat near Highgate Cemetery from their mum’s estranged twin sister, Elspeth. In fact, that’s the one stipulation of the will: that their mother is never allowed to cross the threshold of the apartment. The rift has never been explained and the girls are keen to find out why. It’s a strange and intriguing tale centring round not one but two sets of slightly ethereal twins. Identical Elen Hopkins Standing out when you’re an identical twin is never going to be easy. 16 year olds Kaeleigh and Raeanne are both desperate

for their parents’ attention but their father is a District Court Judge and mother’s running for Congress. So they both play their separate roles: one’s a goody two-shoes and the other’s a real rebel, hell-bent on selfdestruction. Daddy’s little girls are growing up a little twisted and these two very different halves are both trying to work out how to be whole again….but not in a saccharine Atomic Kittentype way. The Memory Keeper’s Daughter Kim Edwards It’s the mid-sixties and, during a freak Kentucky snowstorm, Norah Henry goes into labour. Her doctor husband delivers the healthy baby boy with the aid of a nurse, Caroline Gill. But there’s another little life following quickly behind him, a girl with Down’s syndrome. Dr David Henry tells his wife that she was stillborn and then instructs Caroline to take the baby to a mental institution. Instead, Caroline escapes with the baby and raises her as her own. The two twins grow up, not knowing of the other’s existence, until one night in a blizzard, numerous lives are turned upside down.
