Welcome to the August edition of Around Rugby Magazine Firstly, we have had some very positive comments and reactions to the changes we are making and our increased distribution this month allows coverage of a different part of Rugby to last month. The August edition will reach all homes in Coton Park, Boughton Vale, Strawberry Fields, Newton, Hillside and Hillmorton/Paddox areas (check our website for the streets and postcodes included). Our front cover this month features one of our popular, long term advertisers Jamesway Travel. Please do have a look at the holidays and trips they advertise in this month’s issue. Roy and I can now personally, and very happily, recommend them. We recently joined Jamesway on a weekend away to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We chose a trip to Ascot Races which included some time in London. Our fellow passengers were very entertaining and even though we didn’t win a penny at the races we had a wonderful time. We spent a lovely afternoon in London before heading home from what was a thoroughly enjoyable weekend. Thank you Jamesway Travel! I also have a personal thank you to send out to JJ’s Cakes for the yummy birthday cake and cupcakes they supplied for my surprise party last month. Join us on Facebook (aroundmagazines) and on our Twitter profiles (@aroundmagazines and @aroundrugby) for our regular comments, posts and advertisers offers. Get in touch with Around Rugby’s new Managing Director, Amanda Avery... t: 01788 440015 m: 07841831127 e: amanda@aroundmagazines.co.uk www.aroundmagazines.co.uk

In the August edition we have lots of events for you to look forward to. The Tanks, Trucks and Firepower Show returns to Dunchurch for the August Bank Holiday weekend; The Warwickshire Young Carers invite you to join their Fun Run on 18th August and Myton Hospices advertise an Art Exhibition and Sale during the month. Forthcoming events for September are also advertised by Warwicks & Northants Air Ambulance, Rugby Rotary Club, St Mary’s Church in Barby and Julie and Jeff Hetherington.

Enjoy!

Amanda

PS Thank you to all those who sponsored us and sent their best wishes for the Race for Life. A selection of photos can be seen on our Facebook page. Thank you also to Julie, Jodie, Abbie and Jenny who joined me on the day! Well done!!

AP Autos Recently established business AP Autos opened its doors recently and put a young man’s long term plans into full gear. Alex Pigott wanted to set up his own business eventually and, thanks to unforeseen circumstances, was able to make the bold move ahead of schedule. The 21 year old found himself out of a job last year following a lengthy absence from work after breaking his arm. Although he was able to complete his mechanic’s apprenticeship, his employer was unable to offer him a permanent position at the rate his qualified status required. Not content with being unemployed and not wanting to waste his talents, he made the life changing decision to go it alone straight away. Alex had managed to save money during his incapacity and put it to good use by securing premises in Albert Street, Rugby and equipping his workshop for all manner of vehicle repairs. AP Autos offers a full range of repairs and renewals on brakes, clutches and exhausts among other things as well as MOT tests, diagnostics and services. Competitive charges along with a collection and delivery service for busy motorists makes AP Autos well worth a call!

Summer Hair Care - Professional Tips & Tricks! Each month Denise Cleary from Salon One shares professional haircare and styling tips.

Choosing a Hairstyle to Suit your Face Shape 10

What’s my face shape? Like body shapes there are only a handful of categories your face shape could fall into – in fact, there are only 5 typical face shapes. Oval, Round, Oblong, Square and Heart—shaped. To determine what face shape you are simply pull your hair back off you face and look directly into a mirror. Draw on the mirror with a crayon or lipstick following the shape of your face then stand back and assess! Of these face shapes, the one we’re most often asked about is the round-shaped face:

Round Shaped – Characteristics of a round face are:

• Round forehead • Round jaw line • Fuller wider cheeks Celebs: Kate Winslet, Drew Barrymore, Penelope Cruz, Charlotte Church, Kirsten Dunst

Best styles: Short hairstyles can be very attractive on women with round faces; the short style gives a sophisticated look but also a youthful edge. The right length is crucial in order to avoid making round faces look rounder. Short hair in the wrong style can add unwanted width at the cheeks, emphasizing a round face or even adding the appearance of a double chin. Adding layers and adding volume in the right places can take away the roundness of your face giving an appearance of a more oval shape. Consider short layers to add volume at the top of the head as they will help elongate your face. Try to avoid styles that end at chin length as they will emphasize your round jawline; instead stick to styles that stop above the cheeks for the shorter cuts Long hairstyles for round faces naturally help lengthen a round face shape and if styled straight and sleek will add definition to cheek bones and give you a slimmer appearance. Add layered or tapered ends to help soften the face and add distinction. If your hair is a block colour consider adding some highlights or low lights; these will frame the face and can also break up a style to create a narrower appearance.

Styles to avoid:

There are a few simple rules for round faces; stay away from: × Styles that end at chin length × Chunky, heavy fringes × Medium length styles including bobs! These cuts will either exaggerate the roundness of your jaw or exaggerate the width to your face. When choosing a new style, look at style photos of celebs/ models with the same face shape as you, and then discuss options with your stylist.

Indeed this is where Henry VIII wooed Jane Seymour, so the house oozes with romance and history. The original Littlecote House was built during the 13th and 14th centuries as part of a medieval settlement and was inhabited by the de Calstone family from around 1290. When William Darrell married Elizabeth de Calstone he inherited the house and his family went on to build the original brick mansion in the early 16th century. In 1804 Littlecote passed into the hands of the Leyborne-Pophams and throughout the centuries has been visited by royalty such as Henry VIII who courted Jane Seymour at Littlecote, Charles II and William of Orange.

PHOTOGRAPHY IN LOW LIGHT This article gives a few hints and pointers about taking photos in low light conditions.

20

Light is the major influence on any photograph. The lighting makes all the difference: small changes in light can turn an average photograph into very good photograph. Too much light and the detail and colours are lost; too little light and the photograph can become blurred and fuzzy. When you press the shutter button to take a photograph, the camera has to control three settings - ISO, shutter speed and aperture. This applies to all cameras from top end professional models to mobile phones, the major difference being the degree of control the user has to set each of the basic settings. Top end cameras allow control of all the settings whist mobile phones allow very little control. The ISO controls how sensitive the camera is to the amount of light available. The shutter speed controls how fast the shutter operates, measured in seconds or fractions of a second. The aperture controls how much light is allowed into the camera. Assuming the camera is set for fully automatic mode, in low light conditions it will set the aperture to allow for the maximum amount of light into the camera. The ISO setting will be as high as it can be for the type of camera you are using and the shutter speed could be very low (about 1/10th of a second or less). The issue with having a very slow shutter speed is that any movement in the camera will cause the image to be blurred, or totally out of focus. Assuming you have little or no control of any of the settings, the only choice in this situation is to mount the camera on a tripod or stand it on a wall or something that won’t move when you take the picture. (This picture taken - shutter speed 1 second, f 4.0, ISO 200, hand held). If your camera allows you to control the ISO, shutter speed, and aperture then chose a very high ISO value. A word of caution however, high ISO comes with a price, the picture might look noisy, or have a grainy affect. The better the camera the higher the ISO setting can go with little noise in the picture. Once the ISO has been set, adjust the shutter speed and aperture to give the desired result. However, if the situation allows it - mount the camera on a tripod!

Hello again from The Myton Hospices! We want everything in our anniversary year to be bigger and better than ever before and the House to House collection next month is no exception! Collections form a really important part of our fundraising because they allow people to give as much or as little as they like in the knowledge that when added together the donations will make a real difference to people’s lives. We would love to hear from you if you can spare a few hours to help us. You can choose where you collect either within your own street or neighbourhood, or somewhere else in the area. You could even do it as part of a team through your school, organisation or work place. We will provide you with all the resources you need, including envelopes and an ID badge. We will then ask you to place collection envelopes through the doors in your chosen area on a day of your choice, and then return around a week later to collect the envelopes back in. Last year we raised nearly £10,000 in this way, which is a fantastic amount ... but we can’t do it without you!

For more information on volunteering for either of these roles please contact Sheila Hornsby on 01926 838809. Our brilliant Rugby Support Group hold events for us throughout the year.
