NEW HAROLD LUNN SHELTER - TO CELEBRATE 100 YEARS OF ROTARY

A picnic/BBQ shelter was the choice for a community project to celebrate 100 years of Rotary's Centennial year (1905-2005).

The structure was recently dedicated and named and handed over to the care of the City of Hobsons Bay. Mayor Leigh Hardinge officially cut the ribbon and named the shelter in memory of Harold Lunn a past president of the Club and member for 28 years, who was deeply involved in all aspects of Club business, projects and also Paul Harris recipient, the highest award given in recognition of service to Rotary. Amidst a garden setting created by the Friends of Skeleton Creek it is located off Carinza Avenue by the banks of Skeleton Creek, Seabrook (formerly Laverton South).

PLEASE WELCOME DR TONY BAKARE TO BLADIN STREET MEDICAL CENTRE When Dr John Kavanagh retired in April 2007, after 39 years of Family Practice, he entrusted the care of his patients to Dr Tony Bakare who has purchased the clinic and renamed it “ Good Heart Medical Centre” “.

Dr Bakare quoted “I'm bringing my extensive knowledge, rural skills and rejuvenation to the Centre. Our new name: Good Heart Medical Centre is coming from my nature as a person and not just the heart test we've incorporated into the practice”.

An Australian citizen who hails from Nigeria, Dr Bakare is 38 years old. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners ( FRACGP) and also a Fellow of the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine ( FACRRM). He obtained a degree from Tabor College, Melbourne and completed this year a Master of Family Medicine (MFM) degree from Monash University.

Dr Bakare has practised across Australia in the last 10 years and has been practising in the rural town of Cobar, NSW for the last four years, where he has perfected his skills in general practice, emergency medicine, antenatal care , paediatrics, dermatology and minor surgical procedures. Dr Tony Bakare describes himself as ' A good listener, a very professional person, a friendly, gentle and a very caring person. I like challenging my patients by making sure they understand their medical condition and where to go from there’. See his advert on page 10.

Around and About With Our Roving Reporter Being September means this paper is 28 years old. Once again Barry's (B.J.Clayton) cartoons will appear at Christmas as Barry has very kindly submitted our front page picture again this year. I still have about 5 of his cartoons which I am using occasionally (sparingly) to make them last.

The subject of the placing of the painted planes has arisen again. These are the planes painted by the community that had a short stay instead of the Rotary clock on the round-about in Aviation Road. The last suggestion I heard was to have them in flight (one following the other) on the plantation at the north end of Bladin Street. Another suggestion was that they be separated with one outside the Bendigo Bank/Club Laverton, another outside the RAAF on the round-about and the third on the plantation at the north end of Bladin Street. We hope by next month they may be up or at least a decision made as to their location.

Planning has started for our Festival on the 17th November. This year one of the new additions will be a scarecrow competition.

This will have different age groups, individual awards and group/organisation award plus the most popular scarecrow will be voted on the day so start building your free standing scarecrow now and enter the competition.

More details next month.

Another new 'happening' will be the torch project (which has been written up in various articles in this paper). The play using Laverton life as its theme will be part of the Festival. The mosaic group are working well.

They meet each Tuesday evening at 12 Crown Street (details on page 14) it is open to all. The results are amazing.

The P-12 school re-development is going ahead on schedule but the Department of Education has advised a cut of $200k in the amount of money available. This is a big worry.

The school committee is working out the new name, uniform etc. for the school so that it will incorporate the two primary schools plus the college. They want it to be the best school in the area as well as making the students proud to wear the chosen uniform.

‘Digital Photography’ proved to be of great interest by members when presented by President Noel. Digital cameras can be purchased in various shapes and sizes from the basic compact to large size models such as those with the interchangeable lens system being ‘Single Lens Reflex’ based on the ‘old’ 35mm camera, and one that has a minimum of 5 megapixels to produce excellent photographs.

Depending on the memory card used hundreds of photographs can be captured and later downloaded to “My Pictures” on your computer or saved to a photo album created in one of the many photo editing programmes that are available where the photographs can be cropped, that is sizing and framing the photo to your liking and disposing of any unwanted areas, to darken or lighten for a difference or effect and even change from colour to sepia or black and white also a colourful and attractive frame can be added before printing out the edited image.

August was a particularly busy month with two busy parliamentary sitting weeks in Canberra and many valuable local events taking place.

Recently I attended the Laverton Community Renewal Expo at the Laverton Community Centre.

Council Column Welcome to the September edition of Around Laverton.

I'd like to thank everyone who came to the Laverton Community Renewal Expo held last month. It was great to see such an interested community coming together to review all the good work that has been done in Laverton through the Community Renewal project.

But more importantly, it was an opportunity for residents to have a look at the projects that are still in store for Laverton, to meet the key people involved in revitalising Laverton, to exchange ideas and gather information.

The expo had it all, with displays on everything from employment to health, education and housing and recreation and community services. Keep your eye out over the coming months as we keep you up to date with the range of exciting projects happening in and around Laverton.

September promises to be an exciting time for young people in Hobsons Bay as the Council's Youth Voice Committee calls for nominations for its 'Recognition and Reward Program', an initiative honouring Hobsons Bay's young people.

The program is officially sponsored by Leader Newspapers and will officially recognise one outstanding young person in Hobsons Bay each month until October 2008. Each winner will receive a $100 gift voucher and will feature in articles to be published in the Hobsons Bay Leader every second month.

Young people make so many outstanding contributions to our community in so many ways, so it's only fitting that we acknowledge them.

Hopefully this program goes a long way to giving them the recognition they deserve.

print and cartoon mediums.

This is a unique opportunity for anyone with even a passing interest in art to learn the craft, develop new skills and experiment with art forms they may have never used before all for free.

There is also the potential for your work to be displayed at the Laverton Festival in November.

Classes will run from 6.00pm to 7.30pm each Thursday in September at the Laverton Old School on the corner of Kiora Street and Cameron Avenue, Laverton.

People of all ages and levels of art experience are welcome to attend and I strongly encourage everyone to give it a go as opportunities like this don't come along very often.

THE STRENGTH TEST. 4WD Monthly tested each tyre using the plunger energy test. All tyres were inflated to 51 psi and a steel plunger was pushed at constant speed into the top of the tread block. The distance the plunger moved from its first contact with the tread until it punctured the tyre was recorded (this shows the flexibility of the tyre), as was the force required to puncture the tyre. A WORD FROM LYNNE KOSKY FREE FRUIT FRIDAY I am pleased to announce that 6 schools in the Altona Electorate are to receive free fruit as part of the Free Fruit Friday initiative.

Students at Altona PS, Altona Green PS, Altona Meadows PS, Bellbridge PS, Laverton PS and Seabrook PS in the electorate of Altona will be able to enjoy free fresh fruit every Friday thanks to the first phase of an $11 million Brumby government initiative.

This program will encourage local students to adopt healthy eating practices and avoid unhealthy snacks. Children need fresh fruit and vegetables every day to grow up healthy and strong.

Just like 'Go for your life', this program is part of our push to encourage healthier lifestyles and avoid damaging health issues like obesity and diabetes.

In 1985 approximately 10 per cent of Australian children were overweight or obese. By 2005 this figure had risen to approximately 30 per cent.

Schools participating in Free Fruit Friday will be able to access a range of educational materials to teach children the benefits of healthy eating. Students will also continue to learn about the benefits of physical exercise with mandatory school sport and physical education.

Families and schools play a crucial role in teaching young people how to adopt healthy eating practices. Schools that have indicated an interest in healthy eating programs will be the first to be part of Free Fruit Friday. The program will be phased into other government schools over four years on a voluntary basis.

Schools will be encouraged to purchase fresh produce from local businesses as part of the Free Fruit Friday initiative. Not only are we ensuring our young people get the best possible start in life, we are encouraging schools to buy local and support their local communities.

Other Victorian Government initiatives aimed at encouraging healthy lifestyles among students include the development of the 'Go for your life' Healthy Canteen Kit and the removal of high sugar content soft drinks from school canteens.

TRAVEL by Val. A SHORT BREAK. We had the opportunity to get away for two weeks in our caravan in August and we took it.

We didn't go far 4 days each at Cobram, Griffith & Hay and a couple of days stopover at Moama/Echuca. The weather was about the same as Melbourne's but the early mornings were colder - minus 3 degrees.

You can see the results of the drought by how low the Murray & Murrumbidgee Rivers are, but some recent rains have let farmers put in crops and they are about 30cm high in all the areas except Hay where the flat plains are still bare. They are doing it tough. We were told that some farmers in Hay had to reduce their flocks from 60,000 to 15,000 to keep the sheep alive and may have to reduce further if the rains don't come. This reduction puts a lot of people out of work including the shearers who get paid $2.30 per sheep less their cost of board & food. This we learnt through 'Shear Outback' The Australian Shearers Hall of Fame at Hay. At Hay we had a look at the Hay Gaol which was built in 1878/79. Its cells were 9' 9â&#x20AC;? X 11' 10â&#x20AC;? = (2971mm X 3327mm). This space was used to house 4 prisoners. They started off with 4 cells & 18 associated cells but by 1899 they needed 15 main cells as some of the prisoners were sent there from Sydney. The gaol was used for different things from the criminally insane to girls under the Child Welfare Department until it was handed over to the people of Hay in 1974 to establish a Museum. Hay is where the big trucks pass through from Adelaide to Sydney or on to Canberra or Brisbane. They have so many main highways meeting at the town that they have huge round-abouts to enable the trucks easy passage. We were surprised how polite people, cars & trucks were to each other and how well it all works in the main street.

On the way to Hay we stopped at Griffith.

Griffith is known as the food & wine country.

We were told that there are 56 wineries in Griffith (all with wine tastings) so I guess, if you wanted too, you could lose some time in Griffith. We chose to go to the Catania Fruit Salad Farm and like the rest they had wine tasting too. It was a great tour because of the history of the place. The original 1912 mud brick home is still in use. The mud was taken from the ground, dried in blocks 30cm X 60cm and the house built. Later in the 1940's (I think) the place was rendered over to preserve it but, a section has been left open to show the original 'mud bricks'. The farms at Griffith were allotted to the soldiers returning from the first war. They were given a small amount of money to build their home and an area of land to farm. Most ended up walking away from the arid land but some Italian immigrants that had come to work for them saw the potential if they could get water to the land from the Murrumbidgee River. They persisted with their idea and the area of Griffith known as the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area now flourishes

Budding Artists Invited to Attend Free Art Workshops People living and working in Hobsons Bay are invited to participate in the free ‘Faces of Laverton’ art workshops which will explore the history, people and places of Laverton.

‘Faces of Laverton’ will focus on the personalities and locations of the Laverton area, memories of people and places from the past, current and future projects in Laverton.

The ‘Faces of Laverton’ workshops will encourage residents across the city to emphasise their favourite element of the Laverton community.

Workshop participants will be able to explore ways of creating portraits using a variety of m e t h o d s , i n c l u d i n g p h o t o g r a p h y, printmaking, and cartooning.

The workshops are free and materials will be provided.

‘Faces of Laverton’ is being held at the Laverton Old School, corner of Kiora Street and Cameron Avenue, Altona Meadows every Thursday in September from 6.00pm to 7.30pm. All ages are welcome and no experience is necessary.

Some works may be selected to be displayed at the Laverton Festival in November.

We had a lot of our old cubs & scouts (all grown up now) and new members of the group at the recent 100 year birthday party.

We were also proud to invest into Scouting three new members Thomas, Zoe, Natalie, on the night. What a great night to become one of the many young people in Scouting. Yes Scouting is 100 years old and that is a great effort for any group.

We have still not had the trailer found or returned, but we will start collecting cans again and try to raise funds for the equipment to keep the group going.

We are raising funds at present to get all our young members to the Cub-or-ree next year, as the Cub Scouts only get one chance in their cubbing life and it is too good to miss.

If any one has fund raising ideas or anything these young people can do to raise these monies please give us a ring.

All our Cub Scouts have been working very hard this month to obtain their bicycle badge and learning how to maintain their bikes along the way.

If you have time and would like to join our committee you would be very welcome.

Isn't it great to see the bulbs and blossoms in bloom, the gardens are getting into full colour and makes all the area look great.

Camellia japonicas are different to other shrubs you prune them as they are still flowering and before their new leaves shoot.

Don't waste the blooms pick them and put them inside they look great.

Apply a mulch of moisture- holding material to borders and garden beds to keep the soil moist and cool and reduce weeds.

Stake tall growing plants like delphiniums and hollyhocks early to protect them from winds.

Now is the time to get new pots and soil ready for repotting your cymbidium orchids. They are to be divided and repotted around Melbourne cup weekend.

Remove suckers from roses.

Trim off faded flowers, cutting just above a healthy, outward pointing bud.

Watch for pests and remove weeds from around the bushes.

Water and feed spring bulbs after they finish flowering. This will give them a good start for better flowering next year.

Now is the time to plant: alyssum, candytuff, delphinium, carnations, gazania, lobelia, marigold, petunia, phlox, portulaca, salvia, snapdragons, sweet Williams, verbena, zinnia, and dahlias.

Vegetables: beetroot, capsicum, Chinese cabbage, cucumber, lettuce, pumpkin, radish, spring onions, squash, sweet corn and zucchini.

As a gardener you can not work without workable and appropriate tools so take time out to replace or repair your garden tools now.

Get out and enjoy your garden and if you find a way to get rid of weeds please share this with all us gardeners.

By Dr. R. Cox. BUILD UP YOUR DOGS CONFIDENCE EARLY. The bits of dogs that have the most frequent trouble seem to be those parts that dogs hate most being looked at.

Dogs find having their eyes looked at very confronting – To a dominant male dog to be stared at close up directly in the eye is a direct challenge – Don’t do this to a male Rottweiler without introducing yourself first.

Paws are also a personal area that dogs hate being looked at. Put yourself in their perspective. Even for us, feet can be sensitive (do dogs get ticklish?), and most people aren’t comfortable with being touched on the hand or feet by people they don’t know well, or if they are in an unfamiliar situation.

Dogs are also very sensitive about having their ears played with, particularly if they are itchy or painful, or they have got a bit sick of having them tampered with.

We suggest that when you get a new puppy, part of its training should be to get it used to being handled, to anticipate what might need to be done during veterinary visits, to make life easier.

If your dog (or cat) has long hair, or hair that is likely to get matted, or need maintenance in general, getting it used to being groomed while a puppy, not only makes life easier for you, for routine grooming at home, but also for us when you bring them in for a clip. If your dog stands calmly while being clipped, this can cut down the time taken. The converse is that a dog that struggles constantly is going to be much more stressed afterwards, and may need the extra expense and inconvenience of sedation. As poodles need to be clipped regularly, poodle breeders will start their puppies while very young at getting used to being clipped, even if they don’t need it as they have a lifetime of visiting the hairdresser in front of them.
