ARON SASVARI ID*
Aron Sasvari (*1988 Budapest) is a design driven architect with a versatile background in art and fashion.
He graduated in Architecture at the Budapest University of Technology in 2013, and also studied painting with concrete geometric painter János Fajó. In 2016, Sasvari co-founded the fashion brand Ostkonzept and managed it for seven seasons. He participated in archeological and architecture survey missions in Luxor, Egypt in 2013-16.
After graduating, he started his career in architecture at Narmer Studio, Budapest, where he worked on two award winning built cultural projects in key design roles from conceptual phase to completion: Art Restoration Complex, Budapest, and Rudabánya Archeological Shelter. During the years he has also worked on several house designs in private commissions.
In 2020 Sasvari joined the New Museum of Transport project team at DS+R’s Hungarian partner, M-Teampannon, and worked for 3 years in an international environment closely with the designers on the Museum’s planning from schematic to construction design phases.
In his works, he prefers to ’keep it simple and keep it real’ - where real means strong focus on context, use and sustainability, while simple means an aspiration for pure forms, rough materiality and well proportioned ratio. He puts primary focus on the process, where systematic building of designs and projects, holistic thinking and interdisciplinary collaboration is key. This reasonable approach is well balanced with playful thinking, empathy, and a wide range of cultural references.

NEW MUSEUM OF TRANSPORT, BUDAPEST
DESIGNER: DILLER, SCOFIDIO + RENFRO, NEW YORK ROLE: PROJECT ARCHITECT AT LOCAL PARTNER, M-TEAMPANNON
The New Museum of Transport is a 50.000 sqm brownfield project at a heritage railway maintenance site in Budapest, with the revitalization of several listed industrial buildings and a bold new addition. The sensitively revitalized old Diesel Hall is continued in the spacious New Hall, forming a vast contiguous exhibition space. The new gallery’s impressive slender steel structure provides an uninterrupted space below a skylit lamella roof with a skybox above the roof, while the complex spatial system enables new perspectives to the vehicles from a hovering mezzanine and a sunken entry space.
DS+R’s entry was chosen at an international design competition in 2019, and further planning phase started in the Summer of 2020 and will finish in the Spring of 2023. Joining in September 2020 as a project architect to M-Teampannon, DS+R’s local architecture partner, my roles included close work with the designers, design coordination and mediation between international and local designers and engineers, project scheduling, steel structural coordination, in addition to working on the New Hall drawing development, specificly vertical transportation cores and stairs from Schematic to Construction Design Phases.

MUSEUM OF TRANSPORT: VERTICAL CIRCULATION CORES
Beyond project coordination, my task was the development of the two cores in the New Hall of the Museum, where elevators, staircases, complex electrical and MEP systems needed to be coordinated and detailed in a complicated structural steel bracing frame, following DS+R’s instructions. The cores are minimalisticly cladded in blacken steel, while the stairs are signature refined industrial elements, with broom yellow frame, metal mesh guardrails and concrete treads. Another one of my responsibilities also covered the material and color coordinaton of the New Hall of the Museum, as the coordination spreadsheet illustrates.

COMPETITION ENTRY, 2022 / TEAM: ARON SASVARI + IMRE BOKANYI + ZSOFIA SZOKE
Vác, a middle size town nearby the Hungairian capital, called for a competition to renew its futuristic soc-modern Culture Hall from the 70’s and add a library extension. As an independent team, we defined the main goal as “creating spaces that actually attract life and fun” with a spectrum of activites, and in return involve cultural functions into public circulation, unlike number of yawning cultural developments. The design adds a bridge-like two-story rotated extension, which spans above the flat part of the original building and sensitively connects to the circular theatre space. Beyond the required library, the building and the park include interior and exterior leisure and study spaces, rooftop sport fields and sun terrace, and skateboard and workout elements around the building in a natural garden environment.

ART RESTORATION CENTRE, BUDAPEST
RESTORATION WORKSHOP AND UNDERGROUND ARTEFACT STORAGE FACILITY FOR MUSEM QUARTIER
ROLES: DESIGN CONCEPT, FACADE DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION FOLLOW UP
For Budapest’s developing City Park Museum Quarter, a new service center was established on a neighboring former hospital site, in two 19th century hospital buildings and an additional 40.000 sqm new main building. The latter includes a 4 story underground storage facility and 3 levels of above ground artefact restoration workshops. It’s architecture aims to represent a neutral, timeless tectonic approach with a solid, concrete basis, and a more open upper part with column and transom facade elements, that provide shading.
The six year long design and construction process gave a chance to participate in a large-scale project from concept phase to completion - with key role in developing the concept and design through the entire planning process, facade design, and also the construction site supervision.

RENOVATION OF LISTED BUILDING
DESIGN CONCEPT, OVERALL DETAILED PLANNING PROCESS, CONSTRUCTION SUPERVISION
The building, originally the chapel of the Jewish community’s 19th century hospital, had been converted beyond recognition through the decades. At the renovation, first the building was cleaned down to its original structure, uncovering the double-height central space, which was conserved with bare brick walls, exposing all the traces of conversions. New functions in the two wings were added in a restrained manner, while the exterior was reconstructed to its original shape.

GRADUATION PROJECT
250 APARTMENT CONDOMINIUM AT RIVER DANUBE, BUDAPEST
The project is a study of design possibilities for a condominium under realistic circumstances. With a down-to-earth approach, the aspects of a real-life situation were considered, from building and parking regulations, full utilization, optimal mixture of apartmens. A consciously pure design language was developed, bringing together all the different apartments and loggias into a grid system. The complex is formed by one larger and four smaller buildings above a parking level, completed with an artificial wide landscape, at the newly occupied North-Eastern riverfront of Budapest.

SUBURBAN HOME
COMPACT UNIT FOR A FAMILY OF FOUR ALSO A STUDY ON SUBURBAN MELANCHOLIA AND COPING STRATEGIES
The commission was for a building for a commuting family in a suburban village near Budapest, but the assignment also required responses to the melancholic suburban isolation and diffuse environment. The bunker-like, concrete cubic house, reduced to a more and more compact size during the design process, has a very simple layout: on one side a large living space, on the other a shifted two story part, with bedrooms above and a garage and a boulder room below. In the middle, a skylit central stair and study space connects the functions. The focused structure provides a calm and sober environment, escaping from the everyday life noise.

The L-shaped building of the Budafok primary school lacks gym extension. The proposal adds a profile-glass cladded, simple cubic wing to the original, 50’s building, completing the complex around the court. While the main mass of the building prefers to keep silent, like one large block of translucent stone, the interior’s highlighter colors are rather awakening as a kind of visual warm-up.

A 19th century brick granary, with a 20th century concrete interior frame structure, located in the middle of Budapest’s post-industrial Chinese district, is to be converted into an exhibition space for the representation of China’s culture and economy. In the interior, cut-outs open the originally depressed spaces, transforming them into a contiguous exhibit space. The main addition is a top-level event space replacing the current attic with a red container element, as a consciously obvious symbol of China’s significance in the global supply chains, with the goal of attracting extensive public attention.

The house was designed in a tiny Transylvanian village - but could be anywhere in the region, where traditional village houses here are usually one story 7 m wide gable roofed buildings, positioned perpendicular to the street. DEVELOPMENT PLAN, REVITALIZATION OF A LISTED FORMER CHAMPAGNE FACTORY
ROLE: CONCEPT DESIGN AND DOCUMENTATION, CLIENT PRESENTATION
Budafok, like other satellites of Budapest that were attached to the capital in the 1950’s, struggles with the lack of coherent town center and architectural identity. The development plan of a former champagne factory points to this problem, aiming to involve a centrally positioned but decade-long abandoned plant into the public circulation. The complex features valuable baroque and early 20th century listed buildings, that can contribute to the re-identification of the town, which has roots in champagne production.
The project includes an event hall, a restaurant and a hotel, moreover, hosts champagne industry associations’ office in a new wing. Completed with a public park and an external parking facility - the whole serves the local community and attracts visitors in large number at the same time.

Rudabánya, once the center of Hungarian steel-mining industry in its heyday, is now a memento of the region’s history in heavy industry. The reddish landscape and turquoise colored lake is a rare spectacle that could fit in a sci-fi movie. The visitor centrer’s architecture reflects the decay: the massive, cantilevered steel truss is cladded with white rectangular panels, but already gapped, as if a number of them have fallen off over time.

HASSAN FATHY SURVEY MISSION 2015, 2016
The first project in which I was involved in Egypt was a Hungarian archeological mission at Theban Tomb 32 - the tomb of Djehutymose, a chief of Amun during the reign of Ramesses II (19th Dynasty). Role: hand-drawing documentation of the finds, tomb walls and wall paintings. The second project developed from the former: an architectural mission surveying the accessible works of Hassan Fathy, starting from New Gourna in Luxor. Published in a two vol. book: Current Research of the Hassan Fathy Survey Mission in Egypt.

CONCRETE STUDIES
CONCRETE ART STUDIES
By definition, concrete art is abstract art that is entirely free of any basis in observed reality and that has no symbolic meaning. Studying with János Fajó, the renowned neo avant-garde painter, who was taught by the lead constructivist Lajos Kassák in Hungary - this was a chance to absorb the clear, conscious but instinctive way of art and life. The shaped plywood/oil paintings represent this studying process and the investigation of „own forms”.

INTERIOR TERRITORIES
The series of expressive, automatic paintings was started in 2014, a result of several years of self discovery in psychoanalysis. On the images the newly discovered, hardly explicable, intangible interior landscapes are projected, with all their anxiety, anger or nostalgy.
Interior landscapes, VII., XI., I., all gouache on paper, 70x100 cm. 2014-15.

OST KONZEPT
WORK IN FASHION AND BRANDING. BRAND COFOUNDING AND MANAGING THROUGH SEVERAL YEARS.
Ostkonzept was established in 2016, with the aim of creating an authentic DNA with an eastern, but at the same time European, background: barbaric and sophisticated, intellectually playful, with normcore pieces in a particular mash-up. The brand gained attention and appeared during Budapest fashion weeks, but was put on hold during Covid years that challenged the entire industry and supply chains.
