Big biking good for the heart in Arnprior Scott Campbell
The Heart and Stroke Foundation raised close to $5,000 in their annual Big Bike event in Arnprior on April 27. The event was headquartered at Arnprior District High School, which had one of four teams participating in the ride. The 29-member teams rode a 3-km loop down John Street North onto Elgin and the final stretch to Harriet and back onto Ottawa street to the school. Other Big Bike teams were G.E Hitachi, Walter Zadow and TD Canada Trust.. Heart and Stroke Foundation Big Bike program co-ordinator Charlene Doherty said the bike has been attracting riders for the last 22 years. This season, bikes will be heading to 200 communities in nine provinces. A total of 29 people can take a seat on the Big Bike. “To ride the Big Bike, people have to raise a minimum of $50,” said Doherty. “They usually exceed that.” Registration is already taking place for the event in Arnprior next year. “We could have easily had nine teams taking part this year,” Doherty said. The funds from the ride will go to the foundation for research, the Ottawa Heart Institute and for automated external defibrillators (AEDS) to be placed in schools, churches and locations such as shopping centres. The final tally was $4,641. If you want to register for next year, call Doherty at 613-345-6183.

Bass Pro drops plans for store in the area Brier Dodge, Adam Kveton
Plans to locate a Bass Pro Shop in Kanata have been cancelled. The decision was confirmed by Bass Pro media information co-ordinator Mary Mardis on Monday. “We are not moving forward with the Kanata store at this time,” Mardis said in an email In February, Bass Pro said they were still moving forward with the Kanata store, despite the announcement that Cabela’s, another major outdoor outfitter, was also coming to Kanata. Cabela’s is planned for the west side of the new Tanger Outlets shopping centre and north of the Canadian Tire Centre in a Taggart Realty Management development. “Is Cabela’s still coming?” said Arnprior’s Scott Coady, an active hunter and fisherman, when he heard about the Bass Pro cancellation. “That’s my first reaction, but that’s too bad, because (Bass Pro) is a fantastic establishment.

“It would have been interesting and a little strange to have both (Cabela’s and Bass Pro) so close together. It’s too bad Bass Pro isn’t coming, but as long as we have one outdoor superstore on the west end, that’s great and I’m happy.” “We are certainly disappointed,” said Broccolini Construction’s vice-president of real estate in Ottawa, Bob Perkins, whose company was working to bring Bass Pro to their site in Kanata.
