Penny’s Fudge Factory reopened today, May 1, and carrying on the tradition couldn’t be sweeter for Vic and Carol Bode. The Pakenham couple, who also own Scoops Ice Cream and Carnivic Lodge bed and breakfast, purchased Penny’s from former owners Syd and Judy Gravel after the Gravels announced their retirement last year. “We didn’t want to see this place close, said Vic. “I’m happy we have the opportunity to carry on the tradition. For Carol, it’s a coming-home. A just-retired Catholic school teacher, she began her career as a music instructor at St. Michael’s School in Fitzroy. “It feels like my life has come full circle – I’m back, said Carol, who’s also involved with Rural Root Theatre. “The way I see it, I didn’t retire; I changed jobs. In keeping with tradition, the Gravels taught the Bodes their secrets to making perfect fudge and peanut brittle. “In March, Judy and Syd spent two days teaching us how to make fudge, said Vic. “Fudge is brand new to me but, he added that employees Beatriz Bednarek, who’s worked at Penny’s for eight years, and new manager Cheryl Hughes, both have a real knack and passion for it. “My father taught me, ‘Always hire people smarter than you,’ said Vic. “We’re hoping for a very successful season. I want it to be a comfortable workplace and continue the expectations and traditions (of Penny’s). The work fun has to be in there
