THE POETRY OF PLACE

The unexamined place is not worth inhabiting.

I

am fascinated with every building and every soul that dwells within the one square mile of the village where I live. In each person is a story, a poem, a screenplay, a song that has yet to be written, seen, or heard.

Art and literature which focus on the communities we reside in have the ability to fundamentally heighten awareness of one’s surroundings. On NyackNewsAndViews, every week, I publish a sketch along with a short essay that explore a local person or a place of interest. Since August 2011, I have contributed over 400 entries; and, in these logs are inventories on the poetics of

place, the beauty of built and natural environments, the extraordinary lives of people we pass every day, the value of public arenas such as markets and town squares, as well as the unique character of our shared spaces that has been collectively constructed over generations. When we become observant of our environments, our communities, and attuned to the poetics of place, we may become exceedingly cognizant of her needs and zealous in her defense.
