Flexibility key to longevity for E&P “15 Over 50” honoree Almost forty years ago, as Kelly Freudensprung stepped into his first newspaper job, an old man was walking out.

The old man had seen newspaper operations transition from linotype to offset printing, but he’d had enough when his employer began using computers in the newsroom. He told Freudensprung: “Young man, get out of this business. It ain’t gonna last.” Good thing Freudensprung didn’t listen. The Saline Courier publisher and Arkansas Press Association board member has had an active and thriving career in the industry, working at newspapers in Texas and Arkansas as circulation director, general manager, advertising director and publisher. Because of his longevity and his passion for the newspaper industry, Freudensprung was named to the Editor & Publisher magazine’s inaugural group called “15 over 50: Honoring the Leaders Driving the News Industry Forward.” The profile of Freudensprung and 14 others who have “spent their entire careers inspiring and motivating others,” according to E&P, is published in the magazine’s September edition. Though Freudensprung quipped he was named to the list because “there are so few of us left in the business,” he said the words of the old man at his first job in Nacogdoches, Texas, have resonated his entire life. Freudensprung has remained in the industry because he’s adaptable and willing to learn, he said. In fact, he’s recently been trained by the Courier’s Continued on Page 3
