Pieper views photography as storytelling tool About 25 years ago, the only other person with a camera at Kevin Pieper’s photography presentations was the man or woman tasked with taking photos for the club or organization’s newsletter.

Now, everyone’s got a camera and “everybody is a photographer,” and that’s one of the best things that’s happened in this digital revolution, Pieper said. Pieper, an award-winning photojournalist from north-central Arkansas, said compelling visual images make a difference on websites and newspapers in an age of fragmented news consumption. He will share tips about storytelling through photography at this year’s Arkansas Press Association annual convention. “I think everybody is a photographer, quite frankly,” Pieper said. “The level of proficiency, the level of ability to see, in an artistic sense, is a little different, and that may be what separates what you call a professional, but everybody’s a photographer.”

at the Hotel Hot Springs in Hot Springs. The annual convention runs from June 2629. Pieper said he will focus on more than just photography basics like lighting and composition. He plans to provide advice on the elements of compelling photography and the importance of thinking like a visual storyteller. “If someone is looking at my photography, they’re not looking at your newspaper or at CNBC or another network,” Pieper said. “So, what’s more important for traditional media outlets like newspapers is to do their best to engage their readers. Photography can do that.” Pieper cultivated his passion for photography partly because of his surroundings in the Arkansas Ozarks. Annual APA election ballots due by Friday, May 24th Arkansas Press Association members are encouraged to cast their ballots in the 2019 annual election by the Friday, May 24, deadline. Ballots were mailed to voting members last week. Please return the ballot in the envelope provided and be sure to sign the outside of the return envelope provided to voters. The place for a signature is clearly marked on the outside of the envelope.

This membership group would include specialty media outlets and digital news publications.
