ANF internships great opportunity for newspapers, students Rogers native Sam Hoisington’s road to internships in Washington, D.C. started with a layover in tiny Calhoun County. Hoisington spent a summer in the mid-2010s as an intern at the South Arkansas Sun in Hampton as part of the Arkansas Newspaper Foundation’s annual summer internship program. Hoisington, who now lives in Madison, Wisconsin, said the job positioned him for success at other internships and for a productive career in journalism and communications. “I think one thing always leads to another, and if you get a small internship, you’ll get a big one later on,” said Hoisington, who later landed internships at National Public Radio and the Chronicle of Higher Education in Washington. “I’ve never had more fun than when I was interning at the South Arkansas Sun for the summer,” he added. The Arkansas Newspaper Foundation traditionally offers newspapers an opportunity to host a summer intern. This year, ANF will provide grants of $3,000 each to four Arkansas Press Association member newspapers to hire an intern for between six and 10 weeks during the summer. Like last year, ANF will provide to newspapers the full cost of the internship without a match in recognition of the importance of the program and the needs of APA member newspapers.
