HOT SPRINGS NATIONAL PARK

IT’S THE PARK THAT STARTED IT ALL. Forty years before Yellowstone became the first national park, President Andrew Jackson set aside this place to protect its major natural resource – hot springs. Soon after, bathhouses began to pop up on Central Avenue; eight stand today along what is now known as Bathhouse Row. It’s a highly walkable downtown with nearly 30 miles of trails. The best way to start your day is with breakfast downtown at one of the many great local spots. Continue on foot to the Grand Promenade located behind Bathhouse Row where you’ll find the open springs and jug filling stations where you can BYOB – bring your own bottle – to take home some of the famous spring water. From here, shop, gallery hop or pop into a bathhouse for total immersion into the culture.

HOT SPOTS BATHHOUSES A time capsule of the bathing era, BUCKSTAFF BATHHOUSE is the only bathhouse that has been in continuous operation on Bathhouse Row since 1912. A traditional mineral bath is just what the doctor would’ve ordered back in the day. Nowadays, you can simply walk in anytime. No reservations or appointments are accepted.

QUAPAW BATHS & SPA in its historic location has been fully renovated and feels bright and new, while original elements like its lovely windows and archways add a touch of nostalgia. Choose from four mineral water pools, or opt for a private bath with massage, facial or scrub to follow. Reservations are required.

FORDYCE BATHHOUSE serves as the park’s visitor center and offers guided and self-guided tours of the actual hot spring and bathhouse itself, which formerly housed a gymnasium and bowling alley. Admission is free.

SUPERIOR BATHHOUSE BREWERY houses a craft brewery, the only one of its kind in the country. The tasting room opens daily at 11 a.m. with lunch and dinner served.

WOODLAND GARDENS

HEADLINE GARVAN WALKING THROUGH THE WOODS along these garden paths is a special experience – one that’s unique to Hot Springs. This 210-acre peninsula on Lake Hamilton is dotted with thousands of flowers, hundreds of rare trees and other plantings. The history of this place is rooted in its namesake and benefactor Verna Cook Garvan. It was her wish that people could use the garden for enjoyment and education. Together with the University of Arkansas, her dream was realized through the work of many designers and architects over the years. Today, some of the most beloved features include the four-acre Garden of the Wind Pine, an award-winning Asian garden; the 45-acre nature preserve and bird sanctuary; the Anthony Chapel complex;

BEAUTIFUL! REMINDS (ME) OF GARDENS IN EUROPE

I was very impressed with Garvan Gardens. I have lived in Europe, and I thought I had been transported back to the Netherlands for a brief moment. The chapel is absolutely stunning. This is a hidden treasure for Arkansas.

Chapel has been named one of the coolest places to get married in Arkansas. There’s more to love on the inside. It’s intimate; it feels sacred, a real sanctuary. The chapel is open to guests of the garden – except, of course, when a wedding or wedding rehearsal is taking place. You may call ahead to inquire, 501-262-9620 or 800-366-4664.

MAGIC SPRINGS WATER & THEME PARK

MAGIC SPRINGS is the best way to beat the Arkansas heat. Spring for the season pass for all access – family rides, roller coasters, water slides, concerts and special events – all summer long. Upon arriving, rent a locker to stash all of your stuff. Start with the theme park to get the heart pumping, then head over to the water park to cool off. Misting stations also provide relief as you stroll through the park for refreshments – and there are lots. Choose from a variety of food vendors and concessions; there’s even a beer garden. A short walk past the park’s marquee ride, the Arkansas Twister, brings you to Timberwood Amphitheatre, which has hosted some of the biggest names in classic country and rock – like CCR, Joan Jett and Dwight Yoakam – as well as up-and-coming acts on the national music scene.

MID-AMERICA SCIENCE MUSEUM

IT’S BEEN AROUND SINCE 1979, but this super-cool science center is finally getting the recognition it deserves. The state’s only Smithsonian affiliate, Mid-America Science Museum was one of 10 recipients of the 2016 National Medal for Museum and Library Service which honors institutions making a difference for families and communities in innovative ways. The museum recently reopened after a $7.8 million renovation (courtesy of the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation), so if you haven’t visited since that class field trip in the ’90s, it’s time to see it again. At the top of your list of things to do should be the Bob Wheeler Science Skywalk, an outdoor exhibit – named People’s Choice and Member’s Choice by the Arkansas Chapter of the AIA – that lets you walk through a forest canopy, across netting, into a tree house pavilion and onto several people-watching perches. Indoors, there’s the Marvelous Motion Gallery, Digital Dome Theater, Tinkering Studio and famous Guinness Book of World Record’s most powerful Tesla coil.

THIS IS A GREAT SCIENCE CENTER!

I have been to lots of science centers over the years. Mid-America was good, maybe even very good. Then they got a big grant, and, boom, it was great – as good as the Exploratorium in San Francisco, nearly as good as the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, better than the California Science Center in

LA (if you don’t count the real space shuttle there). A must see for kids of all ages.

OAKLAWN

RACING & GAMING EVERYBODY HAS THEIR OWN WAY of enjoying the good times at Oaklawn. Many come for the gaming. With more games than ever, great food and live music, the gaming area offers hours of fun and excitement. Open year-round, Oaklawn gaming attracts folks looking for Vegas-style action in a friendly, casual atmosphere. You may have a hard time deciding what to play first, with hundreds of the newest reel games, multiple live blackjack tables, roulette, poker and a high limits area. It’s clean and well maintained by a helpful staff with excellent service at Silks Bar and Grill and Pop’s Lounge (my personal favorite). For those who like a little party with their gaming experience, there’s free live music every Friday and Saturday night, too. Other folks arrive at Oaklawn and head directly to the track — Daily Racing Form in hand, with enough time to buy a program, a corned beef sandwich and a cold beer by post time of the first race — and will play the ponies all day long. It’s always fun when you hit the first race, or better yet the Daily Double, going back to the same teller for good luck. From the Jockey Club to the company box, reserved seating to the grandstands – even the infield on warm spring days — there’s not a bad seat in the house. This year’s live racing calendar begins January 13 and runs through April 15, culminating with one of the richest weeks of racing in North America — the Racing Festival of the South, featuring the $1 million Arkansas Derby. Derby Day is a time-honored tradition not just in Hot Springs, but in Arkansas, with the ladies in colorful hats and the gentlemen in seersucker suits. It’s the highlight of racing season, and when it’s over, there’s still gaming next door with weekly promotions and events — including concerts — happening seven days a week. Sign up for a player’s card and get a $10 free coupon at Oaklawn.com. Then come decide how you want to enjoy the good times at Oaklawn.

TRULY EPIC THREE OF ARKANSAS’ EPIC RIDES ARE RIGHT HERE

&

THE WORD “EPIC” gets thrown around a lot, but in the Diamond Lakes Region, we can back it up. Three Arkansas Epic Rides are right here in the Ouachita Mountains. To earn this distinction, the International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA) looks for the most demanding singletrack adventures in a natural setting for a real backcountry experience. In addition to these trails, Hot Springs is also recognized as an IMBA Ride Center for its amenities and resources. These trails should be on every mountain biker’s bucket list, and they’re also open to hikers.

REASONS TO RIDE Q & A with local cyclist

Arkansas native Brent Whittington, owner of Moots Cycles in Steamboat Springs, CO, shares his reasons to ride the Hot Springs/ Diamond Lakes region.

Q: A: Q: A:

Do you Live Reddie?

At Henderson State University, we get asked that a lot.

What do you love about mountain biking in this area?

The forests, creeks and rivers offer beautiful scenes on every trail in this region. From back-country single track to purpose-built flow trail, this area has something to offer everyone, and you could ride for weeks and still not get enough.

What sets Arkansas Epic Rides apart from the ones in Colorado or other places you’ve ridden?

The rolling hills and backcountry feel of the trails where you often encounter more wildlife than people are what set the Arkansas Epic trails apart. Along with beautiful scenery throughout the ride, the Epic trails here are always inspiring and are some of the best in the country.

We Live Reddie, and we share the spirit and belief that all students – no matter where they come from – can achieve greatness here. Our students work hard, push through obstacles and begin to make an impact the moment they set foot on campus. The School with a Heart has been a part of Arkadelphia and Clark County for more than 125 years. Our relationship with the area’s rivers and lakes influences our classwork as well as our down time. Our students can study at the Simonson Biological Field Station on Lake DeGray. Hiking and biking trails, clean rivers and crystal-clear lakes provide plenty of recreation outside of the classroom. The historic and vibrant city of Hot Springs - and our second campus - is less than a half hour away. Are you Reddie? Visit hsu.edu/LiveReddie for more information.

CRATER OF DIAMONDS STATE PARK &

ARRIVING ON A SUNNY AUGUST AFTERNOON at Crater of Diamonds State Park in Murfreesboro, about an hour and a half from Hot Springs, there were a lot of people digging in the dirt, and most of them came prepared with their own shovels, pails and sifters. A few folks even brought canopies and coolers, setting up camp and working in the shade (not their first rodeo, clearly). For first-timers, the park provides all basic equipment for a small rental fee and short informative videos to maximize your chances. Rain, and the regular plowing of the search field by maintenance staff, help, too. Still, you’ve got to bring your own luck.

38

DIAMOND LAKES REGION

Most recently, a nine-year-old Missouri girl found a 1.53-carat white diamond while visiting with her family for the first time. Last year, the Esperanza diamond, an 8.52-carat white diamond, the park’s fifth largest discovery, was found by a Colorado woman in the first 20 minutes of digging on her first trip to the 37-acre mine. She said it looked like a quartz crystal. To be sure, take any promising finds to the Diamond Discovery Center for identification (my most hopeful find, small and translucent, was identified as barrite). After a good day of digging, Diamond Springs Water Park, adjacent to the diamond mine, is an oasis. In Murfreesboro, you’ll find several lodging facilities, as well as multiple resorts near and around Lake Greeson.

YOU WON’T FIND THIS TYPE OF EXPERIENCE ANYWHERE ELSE! Only location where you can collect diamonds at the surface and keep them. Famous site but slightly remote, a completely unique experience – a must for geologists and rock hounds – but definitely enjoyable for all! Worth the trip!

CREATED along an 11-mile stretch of wilderness between Hot Springs and Malvern is Lake Catherine. Scenic and serene, you’ll see ski boats and party barges on open waters and kayaks in quiet coves, but locals will tell you, it’s a fishing lake. The campsites at Lake Catherine State Park lure visitors back year after year. Rustic cabins are available along the lakeshore. The marina is open in the summer with boat rentals, bait and fuel. At the state park, choose from four easy hiking trails or one of many interpretative programs.

THIS IS A GREAT FAMILY LAKE where you can teach the kids how to fish or water-ski. The waters are clear, calm and ideal for snorkeling and scuba diving. Iron Mountain Lodge and Marina is a family-owned resort that sits on 130 acres of wilderness on the banks of the lake where families can enjoy vacationing in a lakeside cottage. Also, DeGray Lake Resort State Park, Arkansas’ only island resort, is located here and offers resort lodging, a marina, PGA championship-rated golf course and unique nature programs.

Arkansas is a wintering and nesting area for the majestic American bald eagle. December through February are peak eagle-viewing months with Eagle Awareness Month held in January each year. Among the best places for bird watching in the state is DeGray Lake. The State Park offers guided eaglewatching guided tours through the fall and winter, which is still a great time to take a lake trip. During these cooler months, there are great opportunities for fishing, hiking and biking, and it’s always nice to return to your warm, cozy cottage or room at the lodge after a day of adventuring.

LAKE OUACHITA

FROM THE MOMENT you set out on Arkansas’ largest lake, you can tell it’s big. Even on the busiest weekend of the year (think: July 4th), it never feels crowded. A few boats may pass by and give a friendly wave, but there’s plenty of room for water-skiing, wake boarding, tubing and jet-skiing, for finding a private cove for swimming or scuba diving, or docking on the shoreline surrounded by Ouachita National Forest. Marinas, resorts and a state park make it easy to get out there; the hard part is forcing yourself off the water at the end of a great day. Off the water, resorts offer cabins and cottages with lake views and facilities that make great wedding venues and conference spaces, like Mountain Harbor Resort and Spa.

A short two-hour trip is from the Dragover Float Camp to the Dragover Pullout. The six-mile Shirley Creek is another easy float. A FAVORITE ARKANSAS FLOAT is the Caddo. The easiest way to get on the water is on inner tubes at Glenwood or Caddo Valley. Bring a big group of friends, and just coast on down the gentle current, stopping at sandbars to swim, eat snacks and skip rocks from the pebbled beaches. Expect a few rippling rapids, but nothing you’ll have any trouble navigating. There are several put-in spots to choose from depending on length and level of experience. Popular trips include Collier’s Creek to Arrowhead, easy three miles for tubers; Arrowhead to Glenwood, 7.8 miles for all levels; and Norman to Arrowhead, eight miles, very fast and difficult, intended for experienced paddlers only.

LIVING IN HOT SPRINGS

Dallas native Stephanie Alderdice shares her favorite things about living in Hot Springs with her husband, Corey, and their young son, Elliot. WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO HOT SPRINGS?

I was born and raised in Dallas. After graduate school, I moved to Kentucky where I met my husband, Corey, who oversaw admissions at the Gatton Academy for gifted students. In 2010, we welcomed our son, Elliot. Two years later, Corey accepted the position of Director of the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and Arts in Hot Springs.

DIAMOND LAKES REGION

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT HOT SPRINGS?

It’s bubbling over with charm and personality. Where else are you going to go to the World’s Shortest St Patrick’s Day Parade or throw water balloons at people as they race bathtubs through downtown. It’s a quirky, lively town that loves to have fun and is welcoming to visitors and new residents.

HOW DOES IT COMPARE TO OTHER PLACES YOU’VE LIVED?

I’ve lived in a bunch of college towns which have a great nightlife, but that quickly loses its appeal. Living in a large metropolitan area is great – but it can feel lonely when you’re looking to make friends. Hot Springs is the most connected area I’ve lived in. For professionals, there are a variety of charitable organizations for people to volunteer and support. I joke with my husband that philan-

thropy here is bigger than basketball in Kentucky. It’s wonderful to live in a community of giving, dedicated people – and it make the area such a nice place to live.

ON A TYPICAL SATURDAY, WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE THINGS TO DO?

I like taking a hike with my son to Falls Branch at Lake Catherine State Park or stopping by the farmer’s market. We’ll often find ourselves at neighborhood festivals and events. Mini-golfing, trying new restaurants, there’s always a lot to do.
