Bio

Arkaitz [b. 1993] is a graduate student who decided to course his studies at three different universities [ETSAM, KULeuven, ETSA San Sebastian] together with an active participationon several associations and workshops around them, persecuting multidisciplinarity during his education process. Then, his deep curiosity will take him to collaborate on the General Plan of Valladolid and after that to take part of Enorme Studio design team. Keen on new technologies [BIM expert] history, art and nature.

Bio

Arkaitz [b. 1993] es un graduado en fundamentos de la arquitectura que dicidió cursar sus estudios en tres universidades diferentes [ETSAM, KULeuven, ETSA San Sebastian] junto con una participación activa en las diversas asociaciones y talleres alrededor de las mismas, con el objetivo de lograr una mutidisciplinariedad durante su proceso educativo. Después, esta misma inquietud le llevará a colaborar en el PGOU de Valladolid para más tarde formar parte del equipo de Enorme Studio. Interesado tanto en las nuevas tecnologías [Experto en BIM] así como en la historia, el arte y la naturaleza.

Collaboration focused on the urban development of the city of Valladolid. The task included the representation and analyse of the special buildings on the old town. Participation as one of the members of a six-people team on the design, representation and management of several projects, competitions and workshops accomplishing a full year of experience.

In the course of my bachelor studies, I explored several universities chasing a wider view of architecture. The final thesis focused on the topic “inter-religious encounter spaces”.

The aim of the design program on the KU Leuven was to develop a large scale public project in groups composed by an international team. The project was focused on the social environment and urban cultures of an eclectic place inside the structure of the city. On 2015 I was selected to carry out the update of the design and contents of the website industrializedarchitecture.com.

Main focus of the workshop was to develop a residential project together with a set of architects and enterprises specialized on precast materials. Organization and active participation on the workshops of Madrid Design week together with renowned artists and architects as Moneo Brock, Jorge Penades, Guillermo Santoma, Takk...

PLADUR COMPETITION

Cortijo del Fraila, Andalucía [ESP]

El cortijo del fraile es un complejo ubicado en Almería que a pesar de su alto

valor histórico actualmente se encuentra en estado de ruinas donde sólo quedan los vestigios de lo que en su día fue fuente de inspiración para Lorca. El proyecto propone preservar la imagen original del cortijo trasdosando con cajas traslúcidas el interior de los espacios más afectados por el tiempo y situando bajo tierra todos los espacios más especializados que requiere el programa.

En primer lugar y como ya se ha mencionado en la parte superior y conservando su imagen se reservaría el espacio para un centro de interpretación del mismo. En segundo lugar toda la parte de laboratorios que se solicita en el programa se entierra bajo el complejo comunicándose con el exterior a través de la zona de cultivos que se abre a la vista del público. Finalmente en las antiguas cuadras del complejo se localiza la residencia de los investigadores con una conexión directa a los laboratorios. Diferenciando de esta forma el flujo de la gente y el de los trabajadores.

Debido a que el concurso pertenece a la empresa Pladur en el proyecto se introduce el uso de un nuevo material, Pladur traslúcido que permita la entrada de luz a las cajas interiores del centro de interpretación, produciendo el efecto contrario por la noche donde las cajas proyectarían luz hacia el complejo. El cortijo del fraile is a complex located in Almería that despite his high historical

value currently is in ruined state where just the trace of what long time ago it was an inspiration for Lorca remains. The project proposes to preserve the original image of the cortijo adding translucid boxes inside the most affected spaces by the wear of time, and placing below the more specialized spaces that the program requires. First of all and as it was already mentioned on the top and preserving the ancient image the space would be saved for an interpretation centre of the cortijo. On the second place all the laboratories required by the programme are buried below the complex maintaining a connection with the outside through the crop area that opens up to the public view.

Finally located on the old stables of the cortijo the residence of the researchers is placed connected directly to the underground laboratories. By this way, there are two different fluxes the visitors and the workers.

Due to the fact that this project goes together with Pladur enterprise the use of a new material is introduced in the project; traslucid plasterboard that allows the light to pass through to the interior boxes of the interpretation centre, getting the opposite effect during the night where the boxes will project light to the complex.

HOUSE OF HUNGARIAN MUSIC

Budapest, Hungary [ESP]

Este

proyecto surge de la participación en el concurso internacional para el diseño de uno de los mayores museos de Europa situado en Budapest. Después del concurso el proyecto fue utilizado en el master de la KU Leuven para integrar las instalaciones y poner en primer plano este tipo de sistemas que suelen olvidarse en los concursos.

El edificio integra un auditorio con una sala de lectura desde los que se accede en planta baja junto con las zonas más públicas del edificio. Su planta inferior se reserva a usos más privados como oficinas y espacios conectados con la sala de conciertos, además, se incluye un gran espacio abovedado cuya imagen, la cual es accesible tanto desde el interior como el exterior del edificio, es de una gran escalinata. En la planta superior se desarrolla un amplio espacio libre generado como un conjunto de vacíos dentro de un volumen que parece sólido desde el exterior.

Primero la estructura de la planta inferior a la baja que se construye con una estructura de pórticos de hormigón, después, la planta superior funciona como un bloque autoportante apoyado sobre pilares que suben desde la planta inferior y además bóveda de la planta baja supone un gran núcleo portante de la estructura superior.

This project comes out from an international contest for the design of one of the biggest museums in the whole Europe, placed in Budapest. After the competition the project was used in the International Master of KU Leuven for the integration of the systems, pushing to the fore all the installations usually forgotten on this kind of contests.

The building integrates un auditorium with a lecture room connected to the ground level together with the public areas of the building. The underground level is used for more private uses such us offices and spaces related to the concert hall. In addition, there is a great domed space whose image, noticeable both from the exterior and the interior of the building, is a great stairway. On the upper level a huge open space is created as a set of empty spaces inside the huge solid volume perceptible from the sourrounding space.

First, the structure of the underground level is built with a set of concrete porticos, then the upper level works as a self bearing structure, as a solid block based on pillars rising from the underground but also the domed space of the ground level is a great supportant nucleous of the upper structure.

INTER RELIGIOUS ENCOUNTER SPACES

es conocida como una de las capitales mas importantes para la diversidad cultural, concentrando en su parte Oeste uno de los mayores ratios de inmigración de Europa.

A pesar de esto la última serie de ataques acontecidos en diferentes ciudades de Europa ha destapado un sentimiento de desconfianza dentro de los ciudadadnos de la ciudad. Ahora esta superdiversidad concentrada en los diferentes barrios se ha convertido en una tensión constante que se extiende por todo un país que todavía no ha olvidado los ataques al metro y aeropuerto. La conexión de los terroristas de Paris y Barcelona con esta ciudad ha proclamado a Bruselas y sus alrededores como cuna del terrorismo Europeo.

Dentro de este contexto de prejuicios y excepticismo entre diferentes culturas, este proyecto pretende crear un espacio compartido que abogue por el respeto y el entendimiento de diferentes religiones con el objetivo de aunar toda esa multiculturalidad para eliminar todos los prejuicios basados en el miedo a lo desconocido.

Brussels is known as an important capital for the cultural diversity, concentrating on its West part one of the higher inmigrations rates of Europe.

However the last serie of attacks happened on different cities of Europe, has triggered a feeling of distrust between the citizens of Brussels. Now the superdiversity concentrated on different neighbourhoods of this city has turned into a constant tension extended all over Belgium where the attacks of the tram and airport have not been forgotten. The conection between the terrorists of Paris and Barcelona to this city has ended up on the proclamation of Brussels and its surroundings as one of the main nests for the terrorism in Europe. Within this context of prejudices and skepticism between the different cultures, this project pretends to create a shared space thats stands up for the respect and the understanding of the different religions with the aim of bringing the multicultural thoughts together to eliminate all the possible prejudices based on the fear to the unknown.

THE KOKUMI ATTACK

En

un entorno enriquecido por la diversidad social se busca la creación de espacios que inviten al encuentro siguiendo las costumbres de comercio locales y acentuando la interacción interior-exterior que existe en los edificios. La intervención parte de los edificios que integran el comercio del área conectando con las diferentes partes de la plaza mediante una jerarquía de estructuras que van desde elementos ligeros colgados que parten de las fachadas de los edificios a puntos de interés a pie de calle que dan la oportunidad a los habitantes de la plaza de apropiarse y modificar el espacio. A pesar de que en este proyecto el programa era libre, las interacciones sociales presentes en esa plaza describía los propios límites de acción. Concluyendo en una acupuntura urbana donde la intervención se distribuye en diversas escalas a través de diferentes elementos modificables según la conexión buscada.

On an environment, enriched by the social diversity the creation of espaces that bring the locals together according their commercial habits and enhancing the interior-exterior interaction that already exists on the buildings is sought. The intervention starts from the buildings integrating the areas trading, and connecting them with different parts of the square through a hierarchy of structures, varying from light hanging elements that start from the buildings faรงade to points of interest displayed on the street that offer the users the possibility of apropiating the square and modifiying the space.

Even if the program of this project was totally free, the preexisting social interactions of the space stablish the action limits. Concluding on a urban acupunture where the intervention is distributed on different scales through diverse adaptable elements following the connection needed in each case.

Uno de los primeros problemas relacionados con su construcción es la pendiente de la plaza que llevaba a sus usuarios a buscar zonas horizontales más cómodas donde pararse. Esta premisa va reñida con la preexistencia de un trazado de tranvía que necesita esa pendiente. Se opta por escalonar la proyección de las fachadas en el suelo dejándo el trazado del tranvía como zona de paso y acceso de minusválidos incrementando la coexistencia entre transportes que ya existe en el área. One of the first problems related to the construction is the existing pendance of the square that pushes the users to look for flat areas more confortable to stop. This premise is in conflict with the preexistence of the path of the tram that needs the slope. Finally it is decided to stagger the slope and project the façades on the ground leaving the tram path as a walking pass and access for disabled increasing the coexistence between people and transport already existing on the area.

LE JARDIN TROPICAL

La

idea principal del proyecto es experimentar en torno a cómo esa autosuficiencia energética se convierte en detonante de activación, promoción y cogestión (liberalización) de actividades ciudadanas en los espacios públicos. La energía solar acumulada en los sistemas de almacenamiento (solares) de los dispositivos no sólo están pensados para su uso individual de carga del teléfono móvil o el ordenador sino más bien para explotar nuevos usos colectivos como la proyección de cine de verano o un pequeño concierto asociado al dispositivo de escenario o como soporte energético para un cuentacuentos en el graderío del aula abierta.

Una segunda cuestión importante en torno a energía y espacio público tiene que ver con la necesidad de una pedagogía urbana que nos aproxime a un consumo responsable y compartido que debería estar justificado desde el carácter finito derivado de las baterías acumuladoras de energía solar. La tercera alternativa de futuro gravita en torno a la posibilidad de generar un calendario de posibles actividades que pueda incluir las necesidades de eventos de las asociaciones formales e informales del barrio y de ciudadanía no organizada. En ese caso lo “eventual” puede llegar a convertirse en “habitual”. [EN]

The

main idea of the project leans on the experimentation around energy self-sufficiency and how it becomes a trigger for activation, promotion and comanagement (liberalization) of citizen activities in public spaces.

The solar energy accumulated in the storage system (solar) is not only designed for the individual use of mobile and computer charge but rather to exploit new collective uses such us the screening of summer cinema or a small concert associated to the stage device or as an eenergy support for storyteller in the bleachers of the open classroom.

A second important issue regarding energy and public space is connected with the need for an urban pedagogy which brings us closer to a responsible and shared consumption that should be justified from the finite character derived from the accumulative batteries of solar energy. The third alternative of the future addresses the possibility of generating a calendar of possible activities that may include the needs of events organised from the formal and informal associations of the neighborhood and from the non-organized citizenship. In this case, the “eventual” can become “habitual”.

MOUNTAIN ON THE MOON

Plaza Luna, Madrid [ESP]

Cada día todos somos más conscientes de la necesidad de mejorar nuestros

hábitos y la conciencia colectiva sobre nuestro entorno, pero sin embargo nuestras ciudades, gigantes e inabarcables, están en muchas ocasiones lejos de reflejar este cambio de paradigma. Es urgente que los ciudadanos contribuyamos junto con distintos agentes como diseñadores, instituciones públicas, marcas... y comencemos a repensar de manera colectiva nuevos imaginarios para nuestras ciudades, que sean capaces de regenerar el paisaje urbano de una forma cohesionada con las personas y su entorno. Por esta razón, MINI junto con Enorme Estudio, una joven oficina de diseño especialista en espacio público y dinámicas participativas han desarrollado una original propuesta en este sentido con una instalación situada en la típica Plaza de La Luna de Madrid.

Se trata de una instalación que además de ser un punto de encuentro alrededor del diseño y la ciudad, se preocupará por el uso de energías renovables, contando con puntos de carga USB y puntos de lectura con luz por energía solar, ofreciendo también la posibilidad de cargar tus dispositivos por energía cinética generada con tu propio movimiento. Será un nuevo equipamiento habitable y eficiente que intentará trabajar los desafíos más apremiantes en la vida urbana.

Day

by day we get more aware of the need to improve our habits and the collective consciousness about the environment, nevertheless our cities, giant and immeasurable, are sometimes far from reflecting this shift of paradigm. It is urgent that citizens contribute together with different agents such as designers, public institutions, brands ... to begin to rethink collectively new imaginaries for our cities, which are capable of regenerating the urban landscape in a cohesive way with people and their environment. For this reason, MINI together with Enorme Estudio, a young design office specialized in public space and participative dynamics, have developed an original proposal narrowed in this way with an installation located in the old Plaza de La Luna in Madrid.

It consists on an installation that besides being a meeting point around the design and the city, it also will be concerned about the use of renewable energies, with USB charging points and reading spots with light powered by solar energy, also offering the possibility to charge your devices by kinetic energy generated with your own movement. It will be a new habitable and efficient equipment that will try to work on the most pressing challenges of the urban life.
