editor’spage THANKFUL in ARIZONA According to what is traditionally known as “The First Thanksgiving,” the 1621 feast between the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag at Plymouth Colony contained turkey, waterfowl, venison, fish, lobster, clams, berries, fruit, pumpkin, and squash. Many of the foods that were included in that feast have since gone on to become staples of the modern Thanksgiving dinner. Those foods, many new to the Pilgrim’s plate, are a testament to the sharing of information and ingenuity on the part of the Wampanoag who aided the new settlers during their tenuous first years of survival.

What was truly remarkable about the first Thanksgiving was not only the Pilgrims’ ability to survive in a harsh new world, but also the Native American tribes’ willingness to help. It is this tradition of sharing, neighborliness, and community building that is hopefully what remains through all our cultural revisions of Thanksgiving.

Arizona is home to 21 federally recognized Native American tribes. In the Grand Canyon State, tribal lands make up 19.8 million acres, or about 27.1 percent of Arizona’s gorgeous landscape. Many Native American cultures describe their community as consisting of more members than solely humans. Animals, plants, and the land itself under this philosophy become more than a resource, they are a member of the community to be cared for. This relationship to nature is expressed in many of the ceremonies, songs, dances, works of art, and stories that honor and offer gratitude to animals, plants and the land we walk upon.

So what about Thanksgiving in Arizona? Of course we have much to be thankful for in the Grand Canyon State: the breathtaking, rugged desert beauty that surrounds us; the unbeatable sunsets; and the glorious November weather, to name just a few! If you’re joining us this month, you will want to not only take in your stunning surroundings, but also take a page from the tribes who have nurtured the land even farther back than the first Pilgrims’ feast, and celebrate with a newfound gratefulness for the land and all it provides.

MIM SHOWCASES CHINESE MUSICAL TREASURES SPANNING 9,000 YEARS

B

eginning on Friday, November 10, MIM’s Target Gallery will host its newest special exhibition Ancient Musical Treasures from Central China: Harmony of the Ancients from the Henan Museum.

This spectacular exhibition showcases, for the first time in the United States, a collection of ancient musical and archaeological treasures spanning nine thousand years of Chinese musical history.

Presented exclusively at MIM and in partnership with the prestigious Henan Museum, this special exhibition explores the harmony between music, people, heaven, and earth through a remarkable collection of more than sixty extremely rare instruments and artworks.

“Harmony—in both the musical and the philosophical sense—has always been important in China, and this exhibition plays upon the concept to tie these priceless treasures together and bring history and music to life,” says Colin Pearson, MIM’s curator for this 18

special exhibition and for Asia.

Some highlights of Ancient Musical Treasures from Central China: Harmony of the Ancients from the Henan Museum include an approximately nine-thousandyear-old flute (one of China’s oldest musical instruments); an extraordinary instrument Arizona KEYMagazine

stand in the form of a mythical beast from the ancient Chu State; a massive bronze bell from the Zhou dynasty that was part of a magnificent set from the tomb of a duke of the state of Zheng; and charming ceramic figurines illustrating the joyful mixing of cultures during the time of the legendary Silk Road.

When exploring the exhibition, guests will not only see the instruments but also hear them played through newly produced video filmed on location in China.

MIM’s partnership with the Henan Museum is a reciprocal one; after MIM displays this collection, their team will create a different exhibition to send to the Henan Museum in the future.

The answer to one of the most asked questions by Sedona visitors is iron!

The incredible array of colors displayed by Sedona’s famous Red Rocks is a direct result of iron oxide in water seeping into sandstone rock formations. Water carrying dissolved iron oxide drains through the porous sandstone and literally paints quartz grains – you guessed it – red!

The Red Rocks vary in origin, color and age.

Some were originally sea sediment while others came from blowing sand. You’ll see bright orange, red and tan rocks. The brightest orange rocks are more than 250 million years old.

White and grey rocks are limestone that formed at the bottom of the sea or sandstone that had its red color washed out by water. You may also stumble across basalt extruded by volcanoes in the past.

Sedona and its famous Red Rocks have been in the making for hundreds of millions of years.

ENJOYING THE SOUTH RIM Individual interests, available time, weather, and health considerations can influence your visit to the South Rim. Before heading out, visit www. nps.gov/grca/ to help plan your trip. Once you arrive in the park, talk with the rangers for upto-the-minute information.

Elevations along the rim vary from 6650 feet (2030 m) at Hermits Rest to more than 7400 feet (2260 m) at Desert View near the East Entrance. Summer temperatures are pleasant along the rim, but increase rapidly as you descend into the canyon. Low humidity makes for big temperature differences between day and night. The low humidity and high elevation also means that it is important to drink water frequently.

Afternoon thundershowers are common in July, August, and early September. Windy conditions prevail in April and May. Snow may fall as early as November. Winter snowstorms continue into March. Rangers present programs—walks, 70

talks, and evening presentations—throughout the year. All activities are free.

Many miles of roads along the rim feature numerous pullouts to enjoy the views. Hermit Road to Hermit Rest is open to private vehicles only from December through February. The free shuttle bus system provides a relaxing way to explore the developed areas of the rim.

The Rim Trail winds along the rim for more than 13 miles (21 km), much of it paved and suitable for visitors in wheelchairs. The Greenway, a broad, paved pathway for hikers, bicyclists, and wheelchairs, leads two miles (3 km) from Grand Canyon Visitor Center to Grand Canyon Village. A separate segment heads east from Hermits Rest along the rim. The Bright Angel and South Kaibab trails descend steeply into the canyon.

VISITOR CENTERS: The Grand Canyon Visitor Center near Mather Point is the largest of several visitor centers and makes a perfect first stop. All are open every day of the year; hours vary seasonally.

AZ Visitors Ask The Expert Q. Holiday air travel mishaps abound. Here are some misadventures shared at the concierge desk and suggestions for the trip home and future forays, to help you avoid asking the question “How did the friendly skies become so hostile?”

A. Hopefully your flight won’t be cancelled like the traveler in the YouTube video who decided to enlist other unlucky wayfarers in a spontaneous dance on the concourse to Stevie Wonder’s “All Night Long!” (And hopefully, you are too young to remember the cushy days when those great silvery birds first took to the air!) However, the right attitude when confronted with plans gone wrong is always a commendable part of the solution. And hub airports and most terminals in large cities have a rest-and-recuperation option in their reward club lounges like the American Airlines Admirals Club (which has reciprocal agreements with certain other airlines.) Often there is an independent club option like the one at Phoenix Sky Harbor which offers lounge access, high speed internet, PC.s, TVs, newspapers and snacks for a $35 fee. Check with your airports in advance. The average fee for daily lounge access is $50 nationwide and well worth it when you consider the money you’re saving by flying coach.

rizona’s largest and longest-running artist studio tour and sale, Hidden in the Hills (HITH), will take place during the last two weekends of November, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, November 17, 18 & 19 and November 24, 25, and 26, 2017. A signature event of the non-profit Sonoran Arts League, Hidden in the Hills features 174 artists in 44 studio locations throughout the scenic Desert Foothills communities of Cave Creek, Carefree and North Scottsdale.

Now in its 21st year, the free, self-guided studio tour offers seasoned collectors and art enthusiasts a rare chance to observe artists at work in their private studios, which are open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the six-day tour.

Each studio has one or more guest artists who also display and sell their work. Many guest artists also set up to demonstrate.

This year’s featured artist is Carlos Page, a contemporary sculptor and host of Studio #29 in Cave Creek. His guest artists include painter Michael McKee, jeweler Rollande Poirier and ceramist Myron Whitaker.

Page’s striking sculpture graces the cover of the HITH four-color glossy artist directory. The untitled wall sculpture is composed of steel and a 200-year-old wood beam that Page reclaimed from a building in New York City. It stands at 59 inches tall, 24 inches wide and 7 inches in depth.

“Choosing a featured cover artist was not easy, as there were so many terrific entries this year, but in the end, we were all drawn to Carlos’ stunning design and abstract form.

He is a brilliant artist and a true visionary,” said HITH marketing chair Carole Perry, a glass artist who has opened her studio to patrons for all 21 years of the tour.

Known for including both nationally-recognized and emerging artists, Hidden in the Hills attracts thousands of patrons who appreciate fine art and seek a variety of mediums, styles and price ranges. With the event taking place the weekends before and after Thanksgiving, the art tour also attracts holiday shoppers who want to find an original, unique gift. AZ
